Out of the five (5) BFPs in the system, three (3) are driven by steam turbines
(BFPT) and two (2) are driven by electric motors. Feed water from deaerator is
supplied to the BFPs through booster pumps. In the case of turbine driven BFP
(TBFP), the booster pump is driven by a separate electric motor whereas in the
case of motor driven BFP (MBFP) the booster pumps are driven directly by the
main motor itself and the BFP is driven through a step-up gear. Common lube
oil system supplies lube oil to the motor driven BFP system. For the TBFP and
TBFP-BP, lube oil supply is supplied from the BFPT itself. The return oil from
TBFP-BP is collected in a separate return oil tank and pumped back to the
return oil line from TBFP.
All the three (3) HHP BFWPs and the four (4) HP BFWPs are driven by electric
motors; and are provided with individual lube oil system.
All the pumps receive deaerated feed water from the three (3) deaerators
through a common suction header. Each pump is provided with an isolation
suction valve at the inlet and its operation is interlocked with the pump.
The BFPs supply feed water to the boiler inlet feed water header through two
(2) HP heaters connected in cascade. The heating steam for the HP heaters is
supplied from the HP/MP steam headers for the HP2 heater and HP1 heater
respectively. Three (3) sets of HP heaters are provided in the system each of
50% capacity. Normally all the heaters are in service and in case of isolation of
one (1) HP heater group, two (2) HP heater groups can feed the requirement of
feed water to the nine (9) boilers. Cold water as required by the boiler is
supplied directly from the common discharge header.
HHP BFWPs and HP BFWPs supply deaerated feed water to the Partner
through their own common header and metering station.
The Boiler Feed Water System consists of the following major equipment /
devices.
The plant is equipped with two (2) motor driven and three (3) turbine
driven BFPs, each having a capacity of 34% of total load. The suction
to the BFPs is drawn from the deaerator through a BP suction strainer
and booster pump. In the case of MBFP, the booster pump is directly
coupled to the main motor and the BFP is coupled to the motor
through a step up gear. Separate motor drives the booster pump of the
TBFP system.
Each pump has three (3) outlet stages. The lowest pressure stage is
connected to a header and supplies warm up water for the standby
pumps. The pump warm up system facilitates the hot starting of the
standby pump immediately when a running pump trips. The warm up
water for the HHP BFWP and HP BFWPs also is supplied by this
common header. Feed water for spray systems is drawn from another
medium pressure stage of each pump and connected to another
common header. The final high pressure stage of the pump is also
connected to a high pressure header which supplies feed water to
boiler through HP heaters connected in cascade. The minimum flow
recirculation line connects the pump final stage discharge back to the
deaerator. This line maintains a safe flow condition for the pump
during startup and low load conditions. The flow will be maintained as
decided by the control system through the minimum flow recirculation
FCV.
Three (3) sets of HP heaters of 50% capacity each are provided in this
system. Three (3) independent lines drawn from the boiler feed water
pumps’ high pressure discharge header supply feed water to the three
(3) sets through individual isolation valves at the HP1 heater inlet and
HP2 heater outlet. Heating steam for HP1 heater is drawn from the MP
steam header and that for HP2 heater is drawn from HP steam header.
The steam pressure in the heater is controlled by the individual CV
provided at the inlet of each heater. The condensate generated during
the normal operation of the heaters is drained to the deaerator either
through a normal drain LCV or through an emergency drain LCV. The
normal drain of the two (2) heaters forming the set is controlled by the
LCV at the outlet of the HP1 heater. Emergency drain LCV is provided
for both HP heaters separately. HP2 heater emergency drain LCV and
HP1 heater emergency drain LCV independently drains the
condensate to the deaerator.
The plant is equipped with three (3) motor driven HHP BFWPs, each
having a capacity of 100% of total load. The suction to the HHP
BFWPs’ is drawn from the deaerator through a suction strainer and a
manual operated valve fitted with limit switch for interlock purpose.
The plant is equipped with four (4) motor driven HP BFWPs, each
having a capacity of 50% of total load. The suction to the HP BFWPs’
is drawn from the deaerator through a suction strainer and a manual
operated valve fitted with limit switch for interlock purpose.
All the pumps in Boiler Feed Water System are started / stopped as a part of
the plant start-up preparation / plant common shut down. One (1) pump in each
group is considered for a group for operation. Thus there are three (3) groups
and each group is operated independently. BFP group is further divided into
MBFP and TBFP group.
ASL3 (Auto Selection Logic3) logic is applicable to the three (3) TBFP and HHP
BFWP groups. ASL2 logic is applicable to the two (2) MBFPs and the oil
system of all the pumps. ASL4 (Auto Selection Logic4) macro logic is
applicable to the HP BFWPs. The selection of TBFP or the MBFP group is
done at the M/T BFP group level. The process interlocks are provided in the
subgroup level. Start up and shut down operations are carried out using the
group basic logic (step type) for start up and shut down functions. For the
operation of the valves in the system logic type-3 is used.
The alarm and status functions of each equipment in the subgroup are
generated at the drive level. The motor winding temperature and the bearing
temperatures of all motors are monitored during normal operation. Temperature
detectors are provided in the winding and bearing for this purpose.
The winding temperature of each phase of the drive motor is measured and
alarms are generated when the temperature reaches the high limit. Similarly
alarms are generated for the bearing temperature also. Vibration detectors are
provided for all the pumps.
The MBFPs are run during the initial startup of the boilers when HP
steam for BFPT is not available. Each pump is provided with two (2)
lube oil pumps for bearing lubrication. One (1) lube oil pump is
normally in service while the second pump is on standby.
Once HP steam header is charged, the plant is run only with the three
(3) TBFPs. The MBFPs are kept as standby. As already explained, the
standby MBFPs are kept under warmed up condition since the water
to be handled is at a higher temperature than ambient condition.
The warm up line valves are normally kept in service for this purpose
when any pump is kept on standby. TBFP lube oil is supplied by the
BFPT lube oil system and separate lube oil unit returns the oil from the
TBFP booster pump.
Each pump has a minimum flow recirculation line for the safe
operation of the pump. The minimum FCV maintains a safe water flow
through the pump at all load conditions.
BFP transfers the feed water in the deaerator to the boilers and its
auxiliaries through the HP heaters. The overall plant efficiency is
improved with the regenerative systems. HP heater is one such heat
recovery device in the power plant. HP2/HP1 heater steam is
extracted from the HP steam / MP steam header respectively. The
heater drain is continuously drained to the deaerator. Each stream is
designed for 50% capacity.
For preservation of the heater from the attack of the oxygen in the
atmospheric air during a long shut down period, nitrogen gas is filled
and kept under pressure inside the heater through the nitrogen filling
line.

1 Normally the three (3) TBFPs are in DCS / L
service during the plant operation. To
check the healthiness of the MBFPs,
these pumps may be started at drive
level once in 15days keeping the
discharge MOV closed. The system auto
status is to be restored after satisfactory
trial of the pumps.
HHP BFWPs
1 Normally two (2) pumps are in service DCS
during the plant operation. The standby
pump may be changed over and taken
into service once in 15 days keeping in
mind to equalize the running hours of the
pumps. The pump change over is done
by deselecting the ASL and starting the
standby pump on subgroup. Once the
standby pump is started and stabilized,
one of the already running pumps may
be stopped in the subgroup level. ASL
must be put back into service after the
change over is established.

During the plant operation, it is quite normal to come across some fault conditions due
to equipment malfunction or high deviation of operating parameters from normal
operating range. Wherever standby equipment is provided, they come into service
automatically on tripping of any in-service equipment. This has been built in the control
system philosophy and the fault condition is annunciated at CCR1. However, when
other fault conditions occur, they are brought into the operating personnel’s attention
by audio-visual alarms. The operating personnel are to respond under such
circumstances to correct the situation.
Some of the most common fault conditions in Pump System and HP heater system
and the possible operator responses to the alarm/annunciation are described
hereunder. Note that the fault conditions of the TBFP due to the BFPT are explained
under BFPT System OPM-13.
Continued
The fault conditions are alarmed in the DCS and the operator is expected to
respond and take action to correct the situation, so that the plant and
equipment are not damaged and there is no harm to the personnel working
nearby.
Alarm title, Initiating device and Set point are indicated and then the
possible causes of such a fault condition are detailed from the past
experience.
The follow up action subsequent to the above response is listed so that the
plant/equipment under fault conditions is rectified and either brought back
to service or kept as standby.
The follow up action subsequent to the above response is listed so that the
plant/equipment under fault conditions is rectified and either brought back to
service or kept as standby.
The plant is designed to provide some important warning signals prior to any
serious damage to equipment or injury to personnel occurs. The operators
should take the responsive action at the first instance of the alarm
annunciation. An early reaction will prevent major problems or a trip of the
system.
The alarm that may be encountered during the normal operation of the
Deaerator Feed Water System is described in this section. The causes of the
alarms and the responsive actions that should be taken by the operator are
explained in the following pages for each of the alarms listed under section 6-2.

The motor operated BFPs, HHP BFWPs and HP BFWPs are distributed
between two (2) buses supplying drive power to the electric motor. Each bus is
sectionalized and fed by two (2) different transformers. This arrangement
ensures a stable and uninterrupted power supply to the pumps. But in the
extreme case of failure of power to the bus to which two (2) motors are
connected there will be 50% load reduction. Otherwise there will not be any
impact on the system.
For the TBFP system which is driven by steam turbine, refer to the BFPT
System OPM-13.
MOVs
Operation of MOVs is not affected as these valves are provided with manual
operation facility also.

Note:
During the walk-down check of Boiler Feed Water System to confirm valve lineup,
prior to startup, the operator should verify that all instrument root valves are open.
The instrument root valves are not included in this check list. In addition, the
operator should also verify that instrument air is lined up to all pneumatically
operated valves, and that local controllers, if any, are in service at the proper set
points. As a general practice two (2) valves are provided in the vent and drain lines.
Under normal operating conditions the first valve in the vent and drain lines are
normally kept open and the second valve to atmosphere will be kept closed. This
condition of the vent and drain valves in the system is to be ensured unless
otherwise specifically mentioned. Confirm cooling water to the system is in service
and lube oil system valve line up is completed. For valves of the related systems,
refer to the particular OPM.

Boiler Feed Water System associated equipments are the motors, pumps and
associated piping and valves. Dehumidifying heaters in the motor shall be kept ON.
The pumps shall be bump started once in 15days if the pump is not running normally.
Since demineralized water only is used in the pipe line, the pipelines can be kept filled
with water under long shut down.
Nitrogen gas sealing is provided for HP heaters steam side for preservation under long
shut down. Individual heaters are connected to the nitrogen gas seal system through a
check valve and a manual operated valve which is normally kept closed. The nitrogen
line joins the HP heater vent line on the shell side connected to the deaerator. The
shell side may be drained and dried and nitrogen filled. The tube side may be filled
with DM water and pressurized.
