Two things are chief among mortals, young


δύο γάρ, ὦ νεανία,τὰ πρῶτ᾿ ἐν ἀνθρώποισι· man: the goddess Demeter—she is Earth but
Δημήτηρ θεά—Γῆδ᾿ ἐστίν, ὄνομα δ᾿ ὁπότερον call her either name you like—nourishes
βούλῃ κάλει·αὕτη μὲν ἐν ξηροῖσιν ἐκτρέφει mortals with dry food. But he who came
βροτούς· ὃς δ᾿ ἦλθ᾿ ἔπειτ᾿, ἀντίπαλον ὁ Σεμέλης next,the son of Semele, discovered as its
γόνοςβότρυος ὑγρὸν πῶμ᾿ ηὗρε κἀσηνέγκατο counterpart the drink that flows from the grape
θνητοῖς, ὃ παύει τοὺς ταλαιπώρους cluster and introduced it to mortals. It is this that
βροτοὺςλύπης, ὅταν πλησθῶσιν ἀμπέλου frees trouble-laden mortals from their pain—
ῥοῆς,ὕπνον τε λήθην τῶν καθ᾿ ἡμέραν when they fill themselves with the juice of the
κακῶνδίδωσιν, οὐδ᾿ ἔστ᾿ ἄλλο φάρμακον vine—this that gives sleep to make one forget
πόνων.οὗτος θεοῖσι σπένδεται θεὸς γεγώς, ὥστε the day’s troubles: there is no other treatment
διὰ τοῦτον τἀγάθ᾿ ἀνθρώπους ἔχειν. καὶ for misery. Himself a god, he is poured out in
διαγελᾷς νιν, ὡς ἐνερράφη Διὸςμηρῷ; διδάξω libations to the gods, and so it is because of him
σ᾿ ὡς καλῶς ἔχει τόδε.ἐπεί νιν ἥρπασ᾿ ἐκ πυρὸς that men win blessings from them.And do you
κεραυνίουΖεύς, ἐς δ᾿ Ὄλυμπον βρέφος ridicule him because he was sewn in the thigh
ἀνήγαγεν νέον, Ἥρα νιν ἤθελ᾿ ἐκβαλεῖν ἀπ᾿ of Zeus? I will show you that this story too
οὐρανοῦ,Ζεὺς δ᾿ ἀντεμηχανήσαθ᾿ οἷα δὴ makes sense. When Zeus had snatched him
θεός·ῥήξας μέρος τι τοῦ χθόν᾿ from the lightning-bolt’s blaze and had brought
ἐγκυκλουμένουαἰθέρος, ἔδωκε τόνδ᾿ ὅμηρον him as a young babe to Olympus, Hera wanted
ἐκτιθεὶςΔιόνυσον Ἥρας νεικέων· χρόνῳ δέ νιν to hurl him out of heaven. But Zeus, god that he
βροτοὶ ῥαφῆναί φασιν ἐν μηρῷ Διός,ὄνομα is, made a scheme to answer Hera’s: breaking
μεταστήσαντες, ὅτι θεᾷ θεὸςἭρᾳ ποθ᾿ off a part of the sky that surrounds the earth, he
ὡμήρευσε †συνθέντες† λόγον gave her this as a hostage and thereby rescued
Dionysus from Hera’s contentiousness. As time
Teiresias 275–297 passed, mortals said that he was sewn up into
the thigh of Zeus, altering the word because
they failed to understand that as god to goddess
he had served as Hera’s hostage.

My lad, Teiresias has given you good advice:


ὦ παῖ, καλῶς σοι Τειρεσίας παρῄνεσεν.οἴκει make your home with us, not beyond the
μεθ᾿ ἡμῶν, μὴ θύραζε τῶν νόμων·νῦν γὰρ πέτῃ bounds of established custom. At the moment
τε καὶ φρονῶν οὐδὲν φρονεῖς.κεἰ μὴ γὰρ ἔστιν ὁ you are all in the air: you are clever, but your
θεὸς οὗτος, ὡς σὺ φῄς,παρὰ σοὶ λεγέσθω· καὶ cleverness amounts to nothing. Even if this god
καταψεύδου καλῶς335ὡς ἔστι, Σεμέλη θ᾿ ἵνα does not exist, as you maintain, you should say
δοκῇ θεὸν τεκεῖν,ἡμῖν τε τιμὴ παντὶ τῷ γένει that he does and tell a wholesome lie: thus
προσῇ. Semele will be thought to have given birth to a
god and your whole family will win honor.

Cadmus 330–336
So, master, receive this god into the city,
τὸν δαίμον᾿ οὖν τόνδ᾿, ὅστις ἔστ᾿, ὦ whoever he is. For apart from his other
δέσποτα,770δέχου πόλει τῇδ᾿· ὡς τά τ᾿ ἄλλ᾿ greatness, they report this, I am told, that he
ἐστὶν μέγας,κἀκεῖνό φασιν αὐτόν, ὡς ἐγὼ gave to mortals the vine that puts an end to pain.
κλύω,τὴν παυσίλυπον ἄμπελον δοῦναι If there is no wine, there is no Aphrodite or any
βροτοῖς.οἴνου δὲ μηκέτ᾿ ὄντος οὐκ ἔστιν other pleasure for mortals.
Κύπριςοὐδ᾿ ἄλλο τερπνὸν οὐδὲν ἀνθρώποις ἔτι.
