HISTORY, LITERATURE AND CRITICISM COURSES

Theatre History (currently Origins to Romanticism, and Modern and Contemporary)

Concordia College 1998-2020
Western State College 1997-8
University of Oregon 1995

The purpose of these junior/senior-level courses is to provide an understanding of how performance

changes within cultures over time. The courses have both content and methodology components, as
students learn to synthesize historical facts into working knowledge of the past. Students engage
primary and secondary sources through play scripts in anthologies, contemporaneous commentary and
criticism, and those physical remains of performance (e.g. architecture, paintings, and artifacts) that
have survived the ages. This approach has clearly made the learning more active for the students.
Student generative work may include traditional research papers, performance or design portfolios, or
electronic media.

Contemporary Dramatic Literature

Concordia College 1999-2007
Luther College 1996
An introductory course in dramatic literature. Students read a variety of plays from the past 100 years
(with the bulk of the plays from the past 25 years). Students learn to analyze plays within a
performance context. Scripts are chosen both for their relevance to 20th Century Theatre History, and
for discussion of the issues they raise. Worthen's Modern Drama has been a useful anthology,
providing interesting plays and essays.

Advanced Play Analysis

Concordia College 1999
In this course students are challenged to closely investigate the different kinds of analysis used by
Theatre artists, and evaluate the choices they make in production. Students read three key theoretical
texts, Stanislavski’s An Actor Prepares, Brook’s The Empty Space, and Jones’ The Dramatic
Imagination, along with three plays. Students see a variety of play in the area, including college and
professional productions. Students discuss the productions and material, create projects and write
papers reflecting their understanding of how plays become productions.

Introduction to Theatre
Western State College 1997
Luther College 1997

This course provides a practical introduction to the Theatre in five areas: script analysis, playwriting,
acting, directing and design. Students read and analyze a play and create a project focused on each
area. Students' learning experiences culminate in a final project, in which they produce and perform a
10-minute play.

ACTING AND DIRECTING COURSES

Beginning Acting
Concordia College 1998-2020
Luther College 1996
University of Oregon 1995
Minnesota State University, Mankato 1991
This is a course in the basics of realistic acting, grounded in Stanislavski’s theories of acting. Students
learn practical performance skills of contemporary dramatic literature primarily through analysis and
performance of scenes and monologues. Students typically perform two monologues and two scenes
over a semester.

Beginning Directing
Concordia College 2011-present
Luther College 1996
This a course based on script analysis of contemporary dramatic literature, to teach students how to
direct realistic scripts. Students conduct a variety of short directing exercises, focusing on rhythm,
tempo, pacing, composition and picturization. Students also learn fundamentals of stage and
management. Course work culminates in the production of long contemporary scenes.

Advanced Acting: Period Styles

Concordia College 1999, 2002
Luther College 1997
This course focuses on non-realistic techniques, in which students rehearse classical dramatic
literature, including Elizabethan, Restoration, and Greek material. Students move beyond realism
through a variety of exercises, including those from John Barton, Augusto Boal, and Moni Yakim.
Students typically perform two monologues and two scenes over a semester. Style for Actors (Barton)
is a useful text, supplemented with film clips (e.g. “Shakespeare in Love,” “Amadeus,” etc.)

Advanced Acting: Scene Study

Concordia College 2013
This course emphasizes intensive Suzuki and Viewpoints training, and focuses on contemporary scene
work and devised performance. At turns physical and conceptual, the pairing of Suzuki and
Viewpoints offers advances performers a set of tools to complement traditional American
Stanislavski-based training.
Advanced Directing
Concordia College 2010, 2011-2016
This course serves to build upon the fundamentals learned in acting, directing and design classes.
Students develop skills in collaboration, communication, creativity and devising theatrical
productions. Texts include The Creative Habit (Tharpe), Notes on Directing (Hauser and Reich), and
Stage Directing (Hodge).
Wintersteen Vita 4

Stage Combat
Concordia College 2009-present
A 1-credit Physical Education course covering the fundamentals of hand-to-hand and weapon stage
combat techniques. Students learn the importance of safety, and how to create the illusion of violence
on stage. Coursework includes falling, slaps, punches, hair-pulls and kicks. Basic sword-work is also
covered, including foot-work, cuts, thrusts and parries.

Mask and the Actor

Luther College 1997
Team-taught with design faculty; students create masks, develop characters based on those masks and
perform improvised sketches. Mask styles included neutral, Commedia, cultural, animal and character
types. A variety of texts are used for mask-building techniques and as examples of mask styles.

DESIGN

Theatrical Design and Technical Production

Western State College 1998
A course introducing students to the principles, processes and techniques of scenic, costume, lighting
and sound design. Students work on a series of staged assignments, learning basic techniques of
analysis, drawing, drafting and design presentation. The Scenographic Imagination (Payne) provided
excellent guidance and a broad approach to design.

Western State College 1997
