EXAMINING MATHEMATICS TEACHERS’ PRACTICES IN THE ADOPTION OF

THE WHOLE BRAIN LEARNING SYSTEM (WBLS)

The Schools Division of Ilocos Norte (SDOIN) made a bold move on the implementation

of the WBLS in 2018 in order to improve the academic performance of learners where teachers

designed unified WBLS lesson exemplars. The teachers, as the direct implementer of the WBLS,

exerted much effort to the implementation of this innovation.

On its implementation phase, selected teachers, school heads and school personnel

underwent series of seminars and workshops on WBLS. Since WBLS is a newly implemented

learning system in SDOIN, some concerns and issues in the process of its adoption are expected

to arise. A major concern would be how teachers could best implement it in the most beneficial

way to the learners and their best practices along its implementation. That is why, we, the

researchers ventured on this to clearly picture out the practices of the teachers in the adoption of

the WBLS.

And to do this, we prepared our research questions and aligned interview questions on

them to elicit the necessary data needed through on the in – depth interviews (pre – observations

and post – observation) and eventually identified our seven (7) participants by using some

criteria, which we believed they possess. After, that scheduling was done. Even though, the

criterion we set was, a teacher on the school where we are affiliated, we were hard up on this

matter. At first, we have set the number of participants to eight (8) but we were not able to meet

this because of some unforeseen events in schools. Due to fiestas, school events, seminars,

trainings and other activities that participated by our participants, the original schedules of the

interviews were postponed many times. These brought us some worries of not finishing the work

timeline we set.
Nevertheless, we still pushed through the interviews with our participants. As observed in

consensus, our participants were generally hesitant at first that they are to audio recorded. But,

we managed to explain to them that their identity is taken cared of with utmost confidentiality.

So with that, the interviews we conducted went through in smooth sailing. After that,

transcriptions were made but it took us so long to accomplish this, since we are still beginners on

this endeavor. But, we were able to surpass the test. Though, we, the researchers, were separated

by geographical location, we still managed to have constant communication to each other, that is

why, we were able to finish the race.

Eventhough we are novice in the field of qualitative research, especially on our roles as

interviewers, we surpassed the challenge! It was a great success doing the whole process, from

making the research questions, aligning the questions in the interview guide, identifying our

participants, interviewing and transcribing. We know that this is just the beginning of something

greater ahead of us.

Hence, as researchers, we should be guided by the rudiments of research. Also, time

management should be observed to accomplish our plans. And not to forget, the key is really just

FOCUS on the task given. By that, everything will follow.
