Course : Introduction to Linguistics

B. Course Description, Aims, and Objectives

The course is an overview of the study of Linguistics that will be treated by focusing it on
the concepts and examples of the branches of Linguistics and also some of their analysis.
It discusses about the definition of terms related to the study of language, examples of
items and comparisons among them. It also discusses about the way how to analyze parts
of the language such as: phonemes, morphemes, words, phrases, clauses and sentences.
The students will learn and discuss how the parts of language are interrelated and how
they work in language, especially English language teaching and learning process.

C. Teaching Format

The students will be taught in approximately sixteen meetings of about 100 minutes each,
explaining about the theory and practice. The teaching and learning process will be
conducted by doing presentations and discussions both by the lecturer as well as the
students. Students will be evaluated based on their understanding of the concepts and the
application of the theories.

D. Assessment

Mid-test score will be taken from the quiz given after approximately the eighth meeting.
Scores are also taken from the final test and assignments. There will be at least two
assignments each semester. Students’ attendance is also calculated and is used for
consideration. The students are expected to attend classes of at least about 75% of the
meeting in each semester and actively participate.

Assessment will comprise 20% of attendance, 30% of assignments, 20% of mid-term test
and 30% of final test. Grades will be based on the following criteria:,
91-100=A, 81-90=B+, 71-80=B, 61-70=C+, 56-60=C, 40-55=D, 0-39=E
