WHAT EXACTLY IS FAITH?
February 1

 Bible Reading: Hebrews 11

 Key Verse: Verse 1 – “Now faith is the substance of
things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
Key Words: Now faith

We read a lot about faith in God’s Word. We walk by

faith (II Corinthians 5:7). We are justified by faith (Galatians
2:16). We live by faith (Galatians 3:2). We please God by
faith (Hebrews 11:6). We work by faith (James 2:20).
“Whatsoever is not of faith is sin” (Romans 14:23). Faith
comes through hearing God’s Word (Romans 10:17). You can
see the importance of faith; but what exactly is faith? Faith is
taking God at His Word, in spite of my feelings,
circumstances, or consequences. I believe God and act upon
it.
As you read Hebrews, chapter 11, you read about some
twenty-six individuals who lived by faith: who overcame their
feelings, overcame their circumstances, and did not focus on
the consequences of obeying the Word of God. They indeed
were men and women of faith.
A little girl had been attending a Sunday School
session where each student had made a little plaque with the
words “Have Faith in God” as the motto. She boarded a bus
that would take her to her home, and as the bus was starting
to move, she realized she did not have her little motto with
her. She jumped from her seat, and dashing up the aisle to
the driver, she shouted, “Stop the bus! I’ve lost my ‘Faith in
God.’”
Don’t lose faith, for you can’t make it through life
without it!! Always remember, when faith goes to the market,
it always takes a basket!
What to do:
✞Remember, little faith brings the soul to heaven;
great faith brings heaven to the soul.
ABEL: THE FAITH TO
WORSHIP RIGHT
February 2

 Bible Reading: Genesis 4:1-8 and Hebrews 11:4

 Key Verse: Hebrews 11:4 - "By faith Abel offered unto
God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he
obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying
of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.”
Key Words: By faith Abel offered unto God a more
excellent sacrifice...

. Have you ever heard someone say something similar

to the following: “I’ve been to the house of God to worship
God”? Now the truth is, because one has gone to church
doesn’t mean that they have genuinely worshipped God.
Genuine worship according to Hebrews 11:4 involves three
things.
First of all, it involves faith. Remember faith is taking
God at His Word in spite of my feelings, circumstances, or
consequences, whether real or apparent. Genuine worship
then means I’m going to do what I learn from God’s Word.
Secondly, genuine worship involves sacrifice. The
Psalmist David said in II Samuel 24:24, “Neither will I offer
burnt offerings unto the LORD my God of that which doth
cost me nothing.”
Last of all, genuine worship involves evidence. The
word witness in Hebrews 11:4 means to give evidence; so
genuine worship means that I will give evidence through my
singing and praise of God that I am genuine in my worship.
If I’m genuine in my worship, I will humble myself to
live by faith for God, I will sacrifice to God, and I will be a
witness for God.
When a monarch of the British Empire is crowned, the
Archbishop of Canterbury holds the crown in front of the one
seated on the throne. Holding the crown, he speaks in one
direction to the audience in Westminster Abbey, “I present to
you Elizabeth of Windsor. Will you do her homage?” The
people respond, “We will.” Then he addresses another part of
the audience in another direction with the same question and
the same response, and then to a third part. Only then does
he crown the monarch. But it does take humility.

What to do:
✞ Remember and put into practice the three
principles that produces genuine worship.

ENOCH: A FAITH TO WALK

RIGHT
February 3

 Bible Reading: Genesis 5:18-24 and Hebrews 11:4-6

 Key Verse: Genesis 5:24 – “And Enoch walked with
God: and he was not; for God took him.”
Key Words: And Enoch walked with God

Have you ever studied the life of Enoch? Enoch is one

of only two people who were ever said to walk with God; the
other person was Noah.
Walking with God means to be in agreement with God.
Amos said in Amos 3:3, “Can two walk together, except they
be agreed?” If you are to walk with God, it takes both a
sincere desire and a dedicated diligence.
I remember as a boy growing up in South Alabama,
everyone had a garden.
We had a neighbor named Mildred who was very
meticulous about her garden. She had no tiller, all she used
was a hoe, and she would break up her garden which was
about 75 feet in length and around 40 feet across. It was a
good size garden. She would plant her plants in neat rows and
water every individual plant by hand. As the vegetables would
grow, she would go plant by plant, leaf by leaf, picking off
every insect she would find. Oh, but her vegetables were some
of the very best eating in South Alabama! Her corn was bright
and yellow; her tomatoes were big, juicy and red. Her squash
was some of the most beautiful your eyes would ever behold.
The produce from her garden was second to none because of
her painstaking effort. Now that’s diligence!
If we are ever going to walk with God, it will take the
same desire on our part. Come to think of it, maybe that’s the
reason only two men were ever said to walk with God. It’s not
that others couldn’t; maybe they were not willing to pay the
cost of what it would take to “walk with God by faith.”
So you can walk with God today, but it will take a
whole lot of faith to keep walking. Do you have that kind of
faith?

What to do:
✞Walk with God. It’s worth the price you’ll pay, and
the rewards for doing so are immeasurable.

NOAH: THE FAITH TO

WITNESS RIGHT
February 4

 Bible Reading: Genesis 6 and Hebrews 11:7

 Key Verse: Hebrews 11:7 - “By faith Noah, being
warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with
fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by
the which he condemned the world, and became heir
of the righteousness which is by faith.”
Key Words: By faith Noah

In II Peter 2:5 we are told that Noah was “a preacher

of righteousness,” so he knew he witnessed through the Word.
But he also witnessed through his actions according to
Hebrews 11:7, “By faith Noah, being warned of God of things
not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving
of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and
became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.” The word
condemn means to judge, to sentence by our actions.
I remember hearing of a man at sea who was very sea-
sick. If there is a time when a man feels that he cannot do any
work for the Lord it is then – in my opinion. While this man
was sick he heard that a man had fallen overboard. He was
wondering if he could do anything to help to save him. He
laid hold of a light, and held it up on the port-hole.
The drowning man was saved. When this man got
over his attack of sickness he was up on deck one day, and was
talking to the man who was rescued. The saved man gave this
testimony. He said he had gone down the second time, and
was just going down again for the last time, when he put out
his hand. Just then, he said, someone held a light at the port-
hole, and the light fell on his hand. A man caught him by the
hand and pulled him into the lifeboat.
It seemed a small thing to do to hold up the light; yet it
saved the man’s life. If you cannot do some great thing, you
can hold the light for some poor, perishing drunkard, who
may be won to Christ and delivered from destruction. Let us
take the torch of salvation and go into these dark homes, and
hold up Christ to the people as the Savior of the world.
Let me challenge each of us today to not just be a light
with our words, but with our actions as well.

What to do:
✞Witness with your words; but remember, they are
useless if your actions don’t match.

ABRAHAM: THE FAITH TO

KEEP DOING RIGHT
February 5

 Bible Reading: Hebrews 11:8 - 19

 Key Verse: Verse 8– “By faith Abraham, when he
was called to go out into a place which he should after
receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out,
not knowing whither he went.”
Key Words: By faith Abraham

As you read Hebrews 11:8-19 you read about how

Abraham had the faith to do right in the midst of impossible
circumstances.
First of all, Abraham had the faith to heed an
impossible call (verse 8). Abraham went, not knowing where
he was going. God didn’t pull a map out and show Abraham
direction for his journey. Abraham had learned to live by
faith because he had learned where to look by faith (verse 10).
Secondly, he had the faith to deal with impossible
conditions (verses 11 – 16). There was the condition of his
wife (verse 11); and there was his own personal condition
(verse 12), “as good as dead.”
Thirdly, Abraham had the faith to deal with an
impossible command (verses 17 - 19). Oh, what faith
Abraham must have had in God! This is certainly a picture of
“great faith.”
Living by faith doesn’t always feel good, but it
produces a victory.
David, a two-year-old with leukemia, was taken by his
mother, Deborah, to Massachusetts General Hospital in
Boston, to see Dr. John Truman who specializes in treating
children with cancer and various blood diseases. Dr.
Truman’s prognosis was devastating: “He has a 50-50
chance.” The countless clinic visits, the blood tests, the
intravenous drugs, the fear and pain – the mother’s ordeal
can be almost as bad as the child’s because she must stand by,
unable to bear the pain herself. David never cried in the
waiting room, and although his friends in the clinic had to
hurt him and stick needles in him, he hustled in ahead of his
mother with a smile, sure of the welcome he always got.
When he was three, David had to have a spinal tap – a painful
procedure at any age. It was explained to him that, because
he was sick, Dr. Truman had to do something to make him
better. “If it hurts, remember it’s because he loves you,”
Deborah said. The procedure was horrendous. It took three
nurses to hold David still, while he yelled and sobbed and
struggled. When it was almost over, the tiny boy, soaked in
sweat and tears, looked up at the doctor and gasped, “Thank
you, Dr. Tooman, for my hurting.”
We grow more by faith under trials than by blessing.

What to do:
✞We are to live by faith, but remember living by faith
isn’t always easy.

SARAH: THE FAITH TO JUDGE

RIGHT
February 6

 Bible Reading: Genesis 21:1-8 and Hebrews 11:11

 Key Verse: Hebrews 11:11 - “Through faith also Sara
herself received strength to conceive seed, and was
delivered of a child when she was past age, because
she judged him faithful who had promised.”
Key Words: she judged him faithful who had
promised

Sarah was well past the years of motherhood. She was

old enough to be Isaac’s great-grandmother. But she judged
God to be faithful.
You know, the joy and happiness of our lives, as
believers, really depend on how we judge God. Do we doubt
Him or do we judge Him to be the righteous God Who is
faithful? Sarah judged God to be faithful in several ways.
First of all, she judged Him to be faithful in that her
100-year-old husband could impregnate her with child.
Secondly, she judged God to be faithful that He could
see her through the months of pregnancy. Now, ladies, many
of you know how tough those months are in your early years.
Can you imagine being the age of a great-grandmother and
going through those months?
Thirdly, she judged God to be faithful in that she could
deliver the child through all the birthing pains and the process
of delivery.
As you can see, Sarah’s faith in God was no small
thing. You could easily say Sarah had a great faith in God, and
that’s the key. Her faith was not in herself or Abraham, but in
God.
“George Allen, founder and director of the Bolivian
Indian Mission, and his wife made a visit to the famous
Mueller Orphan Home in Bristol, England. Mrs. Allen,
looking at the five large buildings, said, ‘Dr. Burton, it must
take a lot of faith to keep all this going.’ Burton answered,
‘Mrs. Allen, little faith in a strong plank will carry me over the
stream, great faith in a rotten plank will land me in the
stream.’”
But Sarah had a great faith in a great God which
brought Isaac into the world. We need a great faith as well to
accomplish great things for God.

What to do:
✞Judge God to be faithful because men will always
fail you.

ISAAC: THE FAITH TO BLESS

RIGHT
February 7

 Bible Reading: Genesis 27:30-40 and Hebrews 11:20

 Key Verse: Hebrews 11:20 – "By faith Isaac blessed
Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.”
Key Words: By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and
Esau concerning things to come

Isaac is the sixth person mentioned in God’s Hall of

Faith. Isaac loved Esau more than Jacob (Genesis 25:28).
This is where the faith of Isaac comes in. He had blessed
Jacob rather than Esau because of his poor eyesight, and the
scheming of his wife and Jacob. But Isaac no doubt knew that
God’s will had been done (Genesis 27:37), and Isaac had the
faith to accept that Jacob being blessed was the will of God.
Walter Knight told of an old Scottish woman who went
from home to home across the countryside selling thread,
buttons, and shoestrings. When she came to an unmarked
crossroad, she would toss a stick into the air and go in the
direction the stick pointed when it landed.
One day, however, she was seen tossing the stick up
several times. “Why do you toss the stick more than once?”
someone asked. “Because,” replied the woman, “it keeps
pointing to the left, and I want to take the road on the right.”
She then dutifully kept throwing the stick into the air until it
pointed the way she wanted to go!
Praise God Isaac didn’t keep throwing a stick up in the
air; he had the faith to accept the will of God in this matter.
So let it be in our lives. We must on occasion have
faith to accept God’s will when our desires are pressing us to
do the opposite.
What to do:
✞We are safer and better off doing God’s will than
pressing forward in our will.
JACOB: THE FAITH TO
DISCERN RIGHT
February 8

 Bible Reading: Genesis 48 & Hebrews 11:21

 Key Verse: Genesis 48:19 – "And his father refused,
and said, I know it, my son, I know it: he also shall
become a people, and he also shall be great: but truly
his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his
seed shall become a multitude of nations.”
Key Words: his younger brother shall be greater

Jacob had claimed Ephraim and Manasseh, sons of

Joseph, as his own and had blessed them both; but had given
the greater blessing to the younger (Ephraim). Joseph
protested, but Jacob in his wisdom, having learned from his
own life experiences and through the power of God, had the
discernment to see that Ephraim would be greater.
The point being that when we live by the Word of God,
we have the faith to discern and act upon the things of God.
Discernment is vital to survival.
A man was dying in the desert. As he stumbled over a
sand dune he was greeted by a man selling ties. The
dehydrated man begged for water, but the salesman said he
only had ties. In frustration and anger the weakened man
continued on his journey for survival. In an hour he reached
an isolated restaurant in the middle of the desert. Was it a
mirage? As he drew closer, he saw it was real. He was
ecstatic. With renewed energy he ran for the door. He was
stopped at the entrance by a security guard who denied him
entry. The guard said, “I’m sorry, sir, but you need a necktie
to eat here. The problem with the man’s decision in turning
down the tie was he thought only for the here and now, rather
than looking down the road and seeing the needs for the
future, the discernment; and that’s what Jacob had, and what
we each need.

What to do:
✞While we have to live in the
here and now, we must plan for
the sweet by and by. That can’t be done without
discernment.

JOSEPH: A FAITH TO BELIEVE

RIGHT
February 9

 Bible Reading: Genesis 50 & Hebrews 11:22

 Key Verse: Genesis 50:25 – “And Joseph took an oath
of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit
you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence.”
Key Words: God will surely visit you

What is faith? Faith is taking God at His Word, in

spite of my feelings, circumstances, or consequences. Joseph
was taking God at His Word that his people would possess the
Promised Land. Not only that, but Joseph was so certain of it
he even gave a command concerning his bones.
D. L. Moody said in regard to faith: “Some say that
faith is the gift of God. So is the air, but you have to breathe
it; so is bread, but you have to eat it. Some are wanting some
kind of miraculous kind of feeling. That is not faith. ‘Faith
cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God’ (Romans
10:17). That is whence faith comes. It is not for me to sit
down and wait for faith to come stealing over me with a strong
sensation, but is for me to take God at His Word.”
Napoleon was on a horse that went wild and was about
to toss him. A private in his army saw what was happening
and hastened to steady the General’s horse. Napoleon looked
at the young private and said, “Thank you, Captain.” The
young man replied, “Of what battalion, Sir?” “My personal
guard,” was Napoleon’s response.
That’s how we live by faith and simply obey the orders
of God as found in His Word. May God bless you, and He will
as you live by faith.

What to do:
✞Know God’s Word. You can’t live by faith without it.

MOSES’ PARENTS: THE FAITH

TO DO RIGHT
February 10

 Bible Reading: Exodus 2:1-10 & Hebrews 11:23

 Key Verse: Hebrews 11:23– “By faith Moses, when he
was born, was hid three months of his parents,
because they saw he was a proper child; and they
were not afraid of the king's commandment.”
Key Word: was hid three months of his parents

As you read the key verse from Hebrews, you will see
that Moses’ parents hid him for two reasons. First of all,
because he saw that he was a proper child. The word proper
means “aglow.” They saw something special in Moses. It was
evident that God was going to use Moses in a special way.
Secondly, they hid him because they were not afraid of the
king’s commandment. (See Exodus 1:16.)
It’s obvious to see that it took faith in God for Moses’
parents to do right. In doing right they had to have the faith
to overcome their fear, “They were not afraid of the king’s
commandment.”
A young woman was waiting for a bus in a crime-
ridden area one evening when a rookie policeman approached
her. “Want me to wait with you?” he asked. “That’s not
necessary. I’m not afraid,” she replied. “Well, I am,” he
grinned. “Would you mind waiting with me?”
A backwoods farmer, sitting on the steps of a tumble-
down shack, was approached by a stranger who stopped for a
drink of water.
“How’s your wheat coming along?” asked the stranger.
“Didn’t plant none.”
“Really, I thought this was good wheat country.”
“Afraid it would rain.”
“Well, how is your corn crop?”
“Ain’t got none. Afraid of corn blight.”
The stranger, confused but persevering, continued,
“Well, sir, how are your potatoes?”
“Didn’t plant no potatoes either...afraid of potato
bugs.”
“For Pete’s sake, man,” the stranger asked. “What did
you plant?”
“Nothing,” said the farmer. “I just played it safe.”
Fear kept him from taking risks, and as a result, he
lost out.
I wonder how many believers have lost out on God’s
blessings because they acted out of fear rather than faith.

What to do:
✞Live off faith, not fear.

MOSES: THE FAITH TO STAND

RIGHT, PART ONE
February 11

 Bible Reading: Exodus 2:11 –25 & Hebrews 11:24– 26

Key Verse: Hebrews 11:25 - "Choosing rather to suffer
affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the
pleasures of sin for a season;”
Key Words: Choosing rather to suffer affliction
with the people of God

As you read the verse from Hebrews, you see that in

standing right, Moses rejected three things.
First of all, he rejected a position. He refused to be
called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. As God’s people, we
must understand that it is better to stand right than have a
lofty position in this world gained because of not standing
right.
Secondly, he rejected the pleasure of sin for a season.
Thirdly, he rejected prosperity of the world for the
prosperity of eternity.
Faith not only grasps a hold, it also knows when to
walk away.
It is very clear that Moses was not a person of pride:
pride focuses on oneself. Moses could have never rejected a
position, pleasure, or prosperity if he were filled with pride.
Pride will always keep you from standing right. Mohammed
Ali, probably the most famous boxer of all time, was on a
plane. A flight attendant requested to Ali, “Sir, please fasten
your seatbelt.” Ali responded, “Superman don’t need no
seatbelt.” The flight attendant shot back, “Superman don’t
need no plane either, fasten your seatbelt.”
Always remember, “He who sings his own praises is
seldom asked for an encore.”

What to do:
✞Have the faith to stand right.
MOSES: THE FAITH TO STAND
RIGHT, PART TWO
February 12

 Bible Reading: Exodus 12:21–30 & Hebrews 11:27 – 28

 Key Verse: Hebrews 11:28 – "Through faith he kept
the passover, and the sprinkling of blood, lest he that
destroyed the firstborn should touch them.”
Key Words: sprinkling of blood

In standing right, Moses forsook Egypt and never

forgot it was God Who delivered them from the land of sin.
I trust today that each of us understand that it is the
blood of Jesus, the precious Lamb of God, Who delivered us
from the bondage of sin and as a result, we too need to stand
right.
In his book, The Great Boer War, Sir Arthur Conan
Doyle recounts the story of a small detachment of British
troops who were surprised by an overwhelming enemy force.
The British fell back under heavy fire. Their wounded lay in a
perilous position where they faced certain death. One of
them, a corporal in the Ceylon Mounted Infantry, later told
that they all realized that they had to come under the
protection of the Red Cross flag if they wanted to survive. All
they had was a piece of white cloth, but no red paint; so they
quickly gathered the blood from their bleeding comrades to
make a large red cross on the white cloth. Their attackers,
seeing the Red Cross flag, immediately retreated. The British
soldiers were saved because of the blood. So it is with every
man, woman, and child – we are saved by the blood of Jesus
Christ shed on the cross. When the enemy sees the blood, he
has to retreat. To God be the glory!
Have you been to Jesus for the cleansing power? Are
washed in the blood of the Lamb?
What to do:
✞Come to God through the blood of Jesus by faith,
and He will save you today.

THE FAITH TO CONQUER

RIGHT
February 13
 Bible Reading: Joshua 6:1-17 and Hebrews 11:30
 Key Verse: Hebrews 11:30 – “By faith the walls of
Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about
seven days. “
Key Words: By faith the walls of Jericho fell

Jericho stood between Israel and Canaan. Jericho was

a formidable obstacle. Scholars tell us it would have been a
well-equipped military station with trained Roman
legionnaires ready to do battle.
To Israel Jericho was insurmountable, but it’s in these
situations that faith triumphs.
Secondly, it took complete obedience for the walls to
fall. Every person did as they were commanded to do.
Thirdly, victory did not come immediately; they had to
obey for seven days. But they did triumph because Israel had
the faith to conquer right. They did things God’s way. They
were faithful and God blessed.
One stormy night an elderly couple entered the lobby
of a small hotel and asked for a room. The clerk said they
were filled, as were all the hotels in town. “But I can’t send a
fine couple like you out in the rain,” he said. “Would you be
willing to sleep in my room?” The couple hesitated, but the
clerk insisted. The next morning when the man paid his bill,
he said, “You’re the kind of man who should be managing the
best hotel in the United States. Someday I’ll build you one.”
The clerk smiled politely. A few years later the clerk received
a letter from the elderly man, recalling that stormy night and
asking him to come to New York. A round-trip ticket was
enclosed. When the clerk arrived, his host took him to the
corner of 5th Avenue and 34th Street, where stood a
magnificent new building. “That,” explained the man, “is the
hotel I have built for you to manage.” The man was William
Waldorf Astor, and the hotel was the original Waldorf Astoria.
The young clerk, George C. Boldt, became its first manager.
It does pay to have faith in God, does it not?!

What to do:
✞Remember, faith in God always results in
faithfulness to God.

RAHAB: THE FAITH TO BE ON

THE RIGHT SIDE
February 14

 Bible Reading: Joshua 2 & Hebrews 11:31

 Key Verse: Hebrews 11:31 - "By faith the harlot
Rahab perished not with them that believed not,
when she had received the spies with peace.“
Key Words: By faith the harlot Rahab perished
not

Sir Robert Anderson, the Irish pastor and writer who

lived in the early nineteenth century, says in regard to Rahab:
“Those who seek for proofs of the divine authorship of
Scripture may find one here. Was there ever an Israelite who
would have thought of preferring that woman’s name to the
names of David and Samuel and the prophets, and of coupling
it with the name of the great apostle and prophet of the
Jewish faith, ‘whom the Lord knew face to face,’ and to whom
He spoke ‘as a man speaketh unto his friend’! And what Jew
would have dared to give expression to such a thought? But
God’s thoughts are not our thoughts. And He who
immortalized the devotion of the widow who threw her last
two mites into the Temple treasury has decreed that the faith
of Rahab took sides with the people of God and shall never be
forgotten.”
It certainly takes courage to live by faith and do the
right thing.
Someone once said,
“It takes courage...
1. To refrain from gossip when others about you
delight in it.
2. To stand up for an absent person who is being
abused.
3. To live honestly within your means and not
dishonestly on the means of others.
4. To be talked about and yet remain silent when a
word would justify you in the eyes of others, but
which you cannot speak without injury to another.
5. To be a real man, a true woman, by holding fast to
your ideas when it causes you to be looked upon as
strange and peculiar.
6. To refuse to do a thing which is wrong, though
others desire it.
7. To live always according to Godly convictions.”
I trust today you have the faith to be on the right side
– to be on God’s side.

What to do:
✞If you’ll live daily by the Scriptures, you’ll always be
on the right side.
GIDEON: THE FAITH TO FIGHT
RIGHT
February 15
 Bible Reading: Judges 6:1-24 and Hebrews 11:32a
 Key Verse: Judges 6:12 – “And the angel of the LORD
appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is
with thee, thou mighty man of valour.”
Key Words: The LORD is with thee, thou mighty
man of valour.

Just about every child can tell the story of Gideon and
how he led Israel to victory over the Midianites. The one
thing I’ve learned through the study of God’s Word and in my
own personal life is “that God’s ways are not my ways.” God
tells Gideon his army is too large and reduces it to 300 men.
He divided these 300 men into three companies and every
man had a trumpet along with an empty pitcher with a lamp
in the pitcher. At Gideon’s signal every man was to blow his
trumpet and break his pitcher. They all began to shout and
the Midianites began to flee. God had given Gideon and Israel
the victory because they had the faith to fight right.
The only thing that keeps us from fighting right is fear
when in reality we have nothing to fear!!
Seeking to know God better, John Chrysostom became
a hermit in the mountains near Antioch in A.D. 373. Although
his time of isolation was cut short by illness, he learned that
with God at his side, he could stand alone against anyone or
anything. That lesson served Chrysostom well. In A.D. 398
he was appointed patriarch of Constantinople, where his zeal
for reform antagonized the Empress Eudoxia, who had him
exiled. Allowed to return after a short time, Chrysostom again
infuriated Eudoxia, who sent him away again. How did
Chrysostom respond to such persecution? With these words:
“What can I fear? Will it be death? But you know that Christ
is my life, and that I shall gain by death. Will it be exile? But
the earth and all its fullness are the Lord’s. Poverty I do not
fear; riches I do not sigh for; and from death I do not shrink.”
So I challenge you today to be a Gideon and fight the
good fight by faith.

What to do:
✞Stand strong in the Lord and in the power of His
might.

 Bible Reading: Judges 4 and Hebrews 11:32

 Key Verse: Judges 4:6 - "And she sent and called
Barak the son of Abinoam out of Kedeshnaphtali, and
said unto him, Hath not the LORD God of Israel
commanded, saying, Go and draw toward mount
Tabor, and take with thee ten thousand men of the
children of Naphtali and of the children of Zebulun?”
Key Words: And she sent and called Barak

Barak is the one person in God’s Hall of Faith that

makes you say “Uh” when you read his name. It was Barak
who would not go and fight against the Canaanites unless
Deborah, the judge of Israel, went with him.
Israel, because of their sin, had been taken captive by
the Canaanites (verses 1 – 21). After twenty years of captivity
the people of Israel said “enough” and turned to God to set
them free (verse 3). The problem though was Israel only had
an army of ten thousand men. While the exact size of the
enemy’s army is not known, we do know they had nine
hundred chariots of iron, which indicates an army of well over
one hundred thousand men. No wonder Barak was leery of
going to battle with the Canaanites. We know that Barak did
go and fight; and as a result, the Lord discomfited the
Canaanites led by their military captain, a man named Sisera.
No doubt Barak’s focus had to be on God!! And that is
often our problem; we focus on our enemy or our dilemma
rather than focusing on God.
When our focus is on God, there can be turmoil all
around us but we are at peace.
A submarine was on patrol during wartime and had to
remain submerged overnight. When it surfaced the next day,
a friend on another ship radioed the captain. “How did you
fare in that terrible storm last night?” Surprised, the captain
asked, “What storm? We didn’t know there was a storm.”
Although the ocean’s surface had been whipped into huge
waves by high winds, the vessel was not affected because the
waters below were calm and tranquil.
So it is in our lives when we focus on God rather than
on the storms of life.

What to do:
✞Make sure your focus is right!!

SAMSON: THE FAITH TO DIE

RIGHT
February 17

 Bible Reading: Judges 16:15-31 and Hebrews 11:32

 Key Verse: Judges 16:30 - "And Samson said, Let me
die with the Philistines. And he bowed himself with all
his might; and the house fell upon the lords, and upon
all the people that were therein. So the dead which he
slew at his death were more than they which he slew
in his life. “
Key Words: Let me die with the Philistines
Everyone knows the story of Samson, his astounding
strength, his amazing riddles, and how he was amused with
women. It was his relationship with the harlot Delilah which
eventually brought him down. With all of Samson’s faults, he
is still listed in God’s Hall of Faith. He was a mighty judge
and a furious warrior. But it wasn’t just Samson’s life he was
known for, it was also his death. Samson had the faith to die
right. Samson died right because he returned to God from a
life of sin.
An Arab awakened in the middle of the night and was
very hungry. He lit a candle and began to eat the dates beside
his bed. He took one, held it up to the light, saw a worm was
in it, and threw it out of his tent. He took a second, held it up
to the light, saw another worm, and threw the date away. The
same thing happened for a third time. Finally, he blew out the
candle, grabbed the dates and stuffed them into his mouth,
not wanting to face reality.
The moral of the story is: truth is truth even if you are
not willing to face it. So it is with death, we are all going to die
if God tarries his second coming. The question is, will you die
right?

What to do:
✞As a believer, if you’ll live right, you’re assured of
dying right.

JEPHTHAH: THE FAITH TO

RELY RIGHT
February 18

 Bible Reading: Judges 11:1-30

 Key Verse: Verse 30 - " And Jephthah vowed a vow
unto the LORD, and said, If thou shalt without fail
deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands,”
Key Words: And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the
Lord, and said, If thou shalt without fail deliver
the children of Ammon into mine hands

When you think of Jephthah, what do you think

about? More often than not, we think of Jephthah’s vow to
sacrifice the first thing that came from his house if God would
give him the victory over the Ammonites. As you well know,
his daughter was the first to come from the house to greet her
father coming home from victory.
Theologians have debated for centuries over whether
or not this was a sacrifice which took his daughter’s life, or did
it confine her to be virgin all the days of her life? While we
love to discuss Jephthah’s vow, that’s not why Jephthah is in
God’s Hall of Faith. He is mentioned, I believe, because of his
reliance upon God to bring Israel the victory. Jephthah knew
that without God, defeat was certain.
So it is in our lives, unless we rely upon God, defeat is
certain as well.
A little boy was tugging at a big rock and doing his best
to lift it. He was grunting and pulling but it didn’t budge. His
father came along and asked him if he was having any trouble.
He said, “Yes, I am trying and trying and can’t move the rock.”
The father said to him, “Well, Son, are you using all available
energy?” The boy replied, “Yes, Father, I think I am.” Then
the dad looked at him and said, “No, Son, I don’t think you
are, for you haven’t asked for my help.”
So it with us – we think we are unable to overcome or
surmount some obstacle, but perhaps it is because we haven’t
prayed about it. We haven’t asked for our Father’s help.

What to do:
✞.Always remember, our efficiency turns out to be
deficiency unless we have God’s sufficiency.
DAVID: THE FAITH TO HAVE
THE RIGHT CAUSE
February 19

 Bible Reading: I Samuel 17:12-54 and Hebrews 11:32

 Key Verse: Verse 29- "And David said, What have I
now done? Is there not a cause?”
Key Words: Is there not a cause?

David is mentioned in God’s Hall of Faith. You could

probably name half-dozen reasons for David making God’s
Hall of Faith; but no reason can exceed David standing and
fighting the Philistine giant, Goliath. In verse 40, we read that
David picked up five smooth stones which raises a question in
the minds of some: why five stones; why not one, or six, why
five? The answer, I believe, is that Goliath had four sons (see
II Samuel 21:22); but nonetheless, David showed faith in
fighting against Goliath.
During the terrible days of the blitz (the Germans’
continual bombing of Great Britain during World War II), a
father, holding his small son by the hand, ran from a building
that had been struck by a bomb. In the front yard was a shell
hole. Seeking shelter as quickly as possible, the father jumped
into the hole and held up his arms for his son to follow.
Terrified, yet hearing his father’s voice telling him to jump,
the boy replied, “I can’t see you!”
The father, looking up against the sky tinted red by the
burning buildings, called to the silhouette of his son, “But I
can see you. Jump!” The boy jumped, because he trusted his
father. The Christian faith enables us to face life or meet
death, not because we can see, but with the certainty that we
are seen; not that we know all the answers, but that we are
known.
Always remember, if the Lord Jesus Christ is our cause
for living, it’s easy to stand for right in this world of
unrighteousness.
What to do:
✞Have the Lord Jesus as your cause for living!!

SAMUEL: A LIFE OF FAITH

February 20

 Bible Reading: I Samuel 15:1-28 and Hebrews 11:32

 Key Verse: Verse 10 - “Then came the word of the
LORD unto Samuel, saying,”
Key Words: Then came the word of the LORD unto
Samuel, saying

There is much that could be said about Samuel. His

name means heard of God. He was given to serve God at an
early age, instructed to hear God in his youth, listen to God in
his adult years. He anointed two kings: Saul and David.
Unger in his Bible dictionary says that Samuel stands
out in two areas: first in his piety, and secondly, in his
patriotism.
Samuel is a picture of a life of faith from his birth to
his death. No wonder he is mentioned in God’s Hall of Faith!
We as well can make it through this life by faith, but
our faith must be in God.
In April 1988 the evening news reported on a
photographer who was a skydiver. He had jumped from a
plane along with numerous other skydivers and filmed the
group as they fell and opened their parachutes. On the film
shown on the telecast, as the final skydiver opened his chute,
the picture went berserk. The announcer reported that the
cameraman had fallen to his death, having jumped out of the
plane without his parachute. It wasn’t until he reached for the
absent ripcord that he realized he was freefalling without a
parachute. Until that point, the jump probably seemed
exciting and fun. But tragically, he had acted with thoughtless
haste and deadly foolishness. Nothing could save him, for his
faith was in a parachute never buckled on. Faith in anything
but an all-sufficient God can be just as tragic spiritually. Only
with faith in Jesus Christ dare we step into the dangerous
excitement of life.
I trust today and everyday, you’ll live your life by faith
in God.

What to do:
✞Understanding is the reward of faith. Therefore, we
should not seek to understand so we can believe, but
we should believe, then we will understand.

DANIEL: THE FAITH TO SPEAK

UP
February 21

 Bible Reading: Daniel 6:1-28 & Hebrews 11:33

 Key Verse: Verse 28 – "So this Daniel prospered in the
reign of Darius, and in the reign of Cyrus the
Persian.”
Key Words: So this Daniel prospered

The person of faith found in Hebrews 11:33 is not

named, but Daniel surely fits the description:
 He subdued kingdoms (Daniel 2:48);
 He wrought righteousness (Daniel 5:17-29);
 He obtained promises (Daniel 6:10 compare with I
Kings 8:44-45); and
 He stopped the mouths of lions.
Daniel could never have accomplished things for God
had he not had the faith to speak up for God.
In 1853, when young Hudson Taylor was making his
first voyage to China, his vessel was delayed near New Guinea
because the winds had stopped. A rapid current was carrying
the ship toward some reefs and the situation was becoming
dangerous. Even the sailors using a longboat could not row
the vessel out of the current. “We have done everything that
can be done,” said the captain to Taylor. But Taylor replied,
“No, there is one thing we have not done yet.” There were
three other believers on the ship, and Taylor suggested that
each retire to his own cabin and pray for a breeze. They did,
and while he was at prayer, Taylor received confidence from
God that the desperately-needed wind would be sent. He
went up on deck and suggested to the first officer, an
unbeliever, that he let down the mainsail because a breeze was
on its way. The man refused, but then they saw the corner of
the sail begin to stir. The breeze had come! They let down the
sail and in a short time were on their way!
Our speech should always be seasoned with salt, but
we should be willing to speak up for righteousness by faith
(Colossians 4:6).

What to do:
✞Be bold enough to speak up.
✞Be gracious enough to be tactful.

SHADRACH, MESHACH, AND

ABEDNEGO:
THE FAITH NOT TO BOW
February 22

 Bible Reading: Daniel 3 and Hebrews 11:34a

 Key Verse: Hebrews 11:34a - "Quenched the violence
of fire,…”
Key Words: Quenched the violence of fire
I marvel at these three Hebrew men. There is a gospel
song about these three men. Part of the song says, “They
wouldn’t bend, they wouldn’t bow, they wouldn’t burn.” But
have you ever considered the following about these three?
First of all, they wouldn’t bow to the false image. They
were specifically commanded to not have any god before God;
and they were commanded to not bow before any image
(Exodus 20:3-5). They obeyed by faith.
Secondly, they shunned the music of the world as well.
Notice though this was “worship music.” False worship and
false music always go together.
Thirdly, they ignored the pressure. While everyone is
bowing, these three refuse to bow – ignoring the pressure to
“fit in” and be like everyone else.
There was a tightrope walker, who did incredible aerial
feats. All over Paris, he would do tightrope acts at
tremendously scary heights. Then he had succeeding acts; he
would do it blindfolded, pushing a wheelbarrow. An
American promoter read about this in the papers and wrote a
letter to the tightrope walker, saying, “Tightrope, I don’t
believe you can do it, but I’m willing to make you an offer.
For a very substantial sum of money, besides all your
transportation fees, I would like to challenge you to do your
act over Niagara Falls.” Now, Tightrope wrote back, “Sir,
although I’ve never been to America and seen the Falls, I’d
love to come.” Well, after a lot of promotion and setting the
whole thing up, many people came to see the event. Tightrope
was to start on the Canadian side and come to the American
side. Drums roll, and he comes across the rope which is
suspended over the treacherous part of the falls –
blindfolded!! And he makes it across easily. The crowds go
wild, and he comes to the promoter and says, “Well, Mr.
Promoter, now do you believe I can do it?” “Well, of course I
do. I mean, I just saw you do it.” “No,” said Tightrope, “do
you really believe I can do it?” “Well, of course I do, you just
did it.” “No, no, no,” said Tightrope, “do you believe I can do
it?” “Yes,” said Mr. Promoter. “I believe you can do it.”
“Good,” said Tightrope, “then you get in the wheelbarrow.”
That’s what Shadrach, Meshach, and Obednego did.
They didn’t just talk faith, they lived faith; and as a result, God
blessed them (Daniel 3:30).

What to do:
✞Don’t bow to false worship.
✞Don’t bow to false music.
✞Don’t bow because of peer pressure.

PETER: ESCAPING THE EDGE

OF THE SWORD
February 23

 Bible Reading: Acts 12 and Hebrews 11:34b

 Key Verse: Acts 12:2-3 - "And he killed James the
brother of John with the sword.” (vs.2) “And because
he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to
take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened
bread.)” (vs.3)
Key Words: he proceeded further to take Peter
also

I cannot say with certainty that Peter is the one who

God has in mind in regard to escaping the edge of the sword.
It could well be Elisha who is in the mind of God. (See II
Kings 6:30 – 31.) But we do know that Peter escaped being
killed with the sword (Acts 12:2-3), not by his own strength
and wisdom but through, not only his faith in God but, the
church’s faith as well (Acts 12:5).
There are three things we learn about faith from Acts
12.
1. You can lock man up, but you can’t lock God out
(verses 1 – 10).
2. The action of faith causes a stir (verse 18).
3. One can literally hide in faith (verse 19).
It’s only by faith that we are kept in the arms of God.
One night a house caught fire and a young boy was
forced to flee to the roof. The father stood on the ground
below with outstretched arms, calling to his son, “Jump! I’ll
catch you.” He knew the boy had to jump to save his life. All
the boy could see, however, was flame, smoke, and blackness.
As can be imagined, he was afraid to leave the roof. His father
kept yelling, “Jump! I will catch you.” But the boy protested,
“Daddy, I can’t see you.” The father replied, “But I can see
you and that’s all that matters.”
And that really is all that matters.

What to do:
✞Understand that our safety lies in our faith in God.

HEZEKIAH: A FAITH TO MAKE

ONE STRONG
February 24

 Bible Reading: II Kings 19:14-37 and Hebrews 11:34c

 Key Verse: Hebrews 11:34c - "…out of weakness were
made strong, “
Key Words: out of weakness were made strong

It would be good for you to read all of II Kings,

chapters 18 and 19, in order to get a clearer picture of what is
taking place. A quick review would go like this...
 Israel is under Assyrian rule.
 Hezekiah has just become king of Israel and his first
edict is to tear down the altars of Baal placed there by
the Assyrians. Hezekiah is restoring temple worship
to Jehovah.
 This upsets the Assyrians and they prepare to march
on Israel unless Baal worship is restored.
 Hezekiah refuses.
 The battle is about to be put in full array.
 Hezekiah receives encouragement from the prophet
Isaiah that all will be well.
 Hezekiah prays (II Kings 19:14-19).
 The night before the battle is to begin God sends a
death angel into the Assyrian camp and 185,000
Assyrian soldiers die without a shot ever being fired.
 Israel is victorious because Hezekiah has a faith in God
which made him strong.
During one of Hudson Taylor’s trials, he wrote the
following to his wife, “I am strong and all is well for I have
twenty-five cents and all the promises of God!”
Today, you can be strong in your faith in God as well,
for you have all the promises of God.

What to do:
✞Tear down the altars of false gods in your life, and
be strong in the Lord.

ELIJAH: A FAITH THAT WENT

INTO ACTION
February 25

 Bible Reading: I Kings 17:8-24 and Hebrews 11:35a

 Key Verse: Verse 22 - "And the LORD heard the voice
of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him
again, and he revived.”
Key Words: and the soul of the child came into
him again

Elijah had a faith that went beyond words. His faith

was a faith of action.
Genuine faith in God is always a faith of action. Faith
is more than words that we say; it’s more than a song we sing;
it’s a life we live. Often our faith is tested with trials and
tribulations, so it was with Elijah. His faith was now
genuinely being put to the test. I’ve often heard and I do
believe – a faith that can’t be tested, can’t be trusted.
As a young man preparing to go to China, Hudson
Taylor determined to learn to live by faith alone while he was
still in England. His resolve was “to learn before leaving
England to move man through God by prayer alone.” He
worked for a doctor and was paid quarterly. When the time
drew near to receive his salary, Taylor was disturbed that his
employer said nothing about it. Taylor had only one half-
crown piece, but he determined not to break his resolution
and ask for his salary. While visiting a needy home on the
Lord’s Day, Taylor felt led of God to give his last coin to the
needy family. The next day he received an anonymous gift
through the mail, four times what he had given to the poor!
The following Saturday, the doctor finished up his work and
said, “Taylor, is not your salary due again?” Taylor told him
that it was and became disappointed when he learned that the
doctor had forgotten about the salary due and sent all his
funds to the bank! He prayed about the matter (for he had
bills of his own to pay) and left it with the Lord. That evening,
the doctor visited him and said that one of his richest patients
had come over after hours to pay his bill! He gave the money
to Taylor, who rejoiced. He had learned he could trust God
and therefore go to China as a missionary.
Now, let me ask you. Do you have a faith that can pass
the trials of life? If not, remember “...faith cometh by hearing,
and hearing by the word of God.” Romans 10:17

What to do:
✞Always remember, a faith that can’t be tested, can’t
be trusted

PAUL: A FAITH TO ENDURE

PUNISHMENT
February 26

 Bible Reading: II Corinthians 11:20-33 & Hebrews

 11:35b-36
Key Verse: Hebrews 11:35b - “…and others were
tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might
obtain a better resurrection:”
Key Words: and others were tortured

Would you not agree with me that as you read about

the Apostle Paul and all he went through that he had a faith to
endure?
I have found that it’s easier to say “I have faith” than to
live and endure by faith.
The following illustration was given by Ken Davis in
his book, How to Speak to Youth.
“In college I was asked to prepare a lesson to teach my
speech class. We were to be graded on our creativity and
ability to drive home a point in a memorable way. The title of
my talk was, ‘The Law of the Pendulum.’ I spent twenty
minutes carefully teaching the physical principle that governs
a swinging pendulum. The law of the pendulum is: A
pendulum can never return to a point higher than the point
from which it was released. Because of friction and gravity,
when the pendulum returns, it will fall short of its original
release point. Each time it swings it makes less and less of an
arc, until finally it is at rest. This point of rest is called the
state of equilibrium, where all forces acting on the pendulum
are equal.
“I attached a three-foot string to a child’s toy top and
secured it to the top of the blackboard with a thumbtack. I
pulled the top to one side and made a mark on the blackboard
where I let it go. Each time it swung back I made a new mark.
It took less than a minute for the top to complete its swinging
and come to rest. When I finished the demonstration, the
markings on the blackboard proved my thesis. I then asked
how many people in the room BELIEVED the law of the
pendulum was true. All of my classmates raised their hands,
so did the teacher. He started to walk to the front of the room
thinking the class was over. In reality, it had just begun.
Hanging from the ceiling beams in the middle of the room
was a large, crude but functional pendulum (250 pounds of
metal weights tied to four strands of 500-pound test
parachute cord).
“I invited the instructor to climb up on a table and sit
in a chair with the back of his head against a cement wall.
Then I brought the 250 pounds of metal up to his nose.
Holding the huge pendulum just a fraction of an inch from his
face, I once again explained the law of the pendulum he had
applauded only moments before. ‘If the law of the pendulum
is true, then when I release this mass of metal, it will swing
across the room and return short of the release point. Your
nose will be in no danger.’ After that final restatement of this
law, I looked him in the eye and asked, ‘Sir, do you believe this
law is true?’ There was a long pause. Huge beads of sweat
formed on his upper lip and then weakly he nodded and
whispered, ‘Yes.’ I released the pendulum. It made a
swishing sound as it arced across the room. At the far end of
its swing, it paused momentarily and started back. I never
saw a man move so fast in my life. He literally dived from the
table. Deftly stepping around the still-swinging pendulum, I
asked the class, ‘Does he believe in the law of the pendulum?’”
Now, let me ask, when the trials of life swing their
pendulum at you, does your faith endure or does it die?

What to do:
✞Always remember, “Faith puts God between us and
our circumstances.”
Daniel Webster

STEPHEN: A FAITH THAT

TESTIFIES
February 27

 Bible Reading: Acts 7:51-60 and Hebrews 11:37a

 Key Verse: Hebrews 11:37a -" They were stoned, …”
Key Words: They were stoned

There are several things we know about Stephen. We

know that he was the first deacon chosen from the church at
Jerusalem. Thus we know that he was a man full of faith (Acts
6:5). Now we all know people who are full of themselves, but
how many people do you know who are full of faith?
We also know based upon Acts 7 that Stephen had the
faith to testify for Christ. He indeed was full of faith.
When a traveler in the early days of the west came to
the Mississippi, he discovered there was no bridge.
Fortunately it was winter and the great river was sheeted over
with ice. But the traveler was afraid to trust the ice, not
knowing how thick it was. Finally with infinite caution, he
crept on his hands and knees and managed to get halfway
over. And then he heard – yes, he heard singing from behind.
Cautiously he turned, and there, out of the dusk, came
another traveler, driving a four-horse load of coal over the ice,
singing as he went!
Now I ask you, which of these men was full of faith
that the ice would hold?
So it is in our lives, many believers crawl their way
through because of little faith, and others go along merrily
singing, full of faith. Which of these are you?

What to do:
✞.Strive and believe to have a life that is full of faith.

THE EARLY CHRISTIANS: THE

FAITH TO HOPE
February 28

 Bible Reading: I Peter 1 and Hebrews 11:37b – 40

 Key Verse: Hebrews 11:39 - "And these all, having
obtained a good report through faith, received not the
promise:”
Key Words: received not the promise

These unnamed individuals who made God’s Hall of

Faith will never be known this side of heaven; but through all
their tribulations, they had faith to hope.
Self-made millionaire, Eugene Lang, greatly changed
the lives of a 6th grade class in East Harlem. Mr. Lang had
been asked to speak to a class of fifty-nine 6 th graders. What
would he say to inspire these students to stay in school and to
have hope for the future? He wondered how he could get
these predominantly black and Puerto-Rican children to even
look at him, much less listen to him. Putting aside his notes
he decided to speak to them from his heart. “Stay in school,”
he said, “and I’ll help pay the college tuition for every one of
you!” At that moment the lives of these students changed.
For the first time they had hope. One student said, “I have
something to look forward to, something waiting for me. It
was a golden moment.” Nearly 90% of that 6 th grade class
went on to finish high school, because they had something to
hope for.
These saints of God had even a greater hope than
college – they had the hope of heaven and the hope of eternal
life. They had the faith to hope.
Today, in your life if all seems lost, I challenge you to
have the faith to hope – to hope for the Lord’s return, the
hope of heaven, and the hope of eternal life. Never lose hope!!
What to do:
✞Look around and see the wonders of God; and
never, never lose hope.

A CLOSING THOUGHT
February 29

 Bible Reading: Acts 27:21-33

 Key Verse: Verse 25 - ”Wherefore, sirs, be of good
cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was
told me.”
Key Words: for I believe God

Now really, isn’t that what faith is? It’s taking God at
His Word over my feelings, fears, and foes.
Look at the faith of the master mariner! He looses his
cable, he streams away from the land. For days, weeks, even
months, he sees neither sail nor shore, yet on he goes day and
night without fear, till one morning he finds himself exactly
upon the desired haven toward which he has been steering.
How has he found his way over the trackless deep? He
has trusted his compass, his nautical almanac, his glasses, and
the heavenly bodies; and obeying their guidance, without
sighting land, he has steered so accurately that he has not
changed a point to enter port.
It is a wonderful thing.… It is glorious to be so far out
on the ocean of Divine love, believing in God, and steering for
Heaven straight away, by the direction of the Word of God.
~ C. H. Spurgeon
Travel this life by faith in God and His Word and your
journey will be filled with peace during both good and
challenging times.
What to do:
✞When you live by the Word of God, you will
walk by faith.
