Analysis of Least Learned Skills

ENGLISH 8
2nd Quarter
S.Y. 2019-2020

Out of 50 items test, item number 29 (EN8G-IIa-9: Use appropriate

grammatical signals or expressions suitable to each pattern of idea development ) got the highest
number of errors because it requires knowledge and comprehension
in order to analyse the statement which is to determine the pattern
of idea development in the paragraph. This skill should be
discussed with plenty of instructional materials for
drills/practice which I wasn’t able to provide.
This competency (EN8V-IIb-24.1: Distinguish between and among verbal, situational, and
dramatic types of irony and give examples of each) in item number 12 got the second
highest number of errors because most of the students were confused
since all statements in the choices were verbal irony except for
one, maybe they answered the letter which they believed was a
verbal irony.
The third competency that belonged to the least learned skill
by the Grade 8 students was (EN8V-IIf-10.1.4: Identify figures of speech that show emphasis
(hyperbole and litotes). Item number 18 was a long statement which contained
litotes because of the double negatives. 82 students got the wrong
answer because they overanalysed the statement.
Item number 25 got the fourth highest number of errors.
Students failed to discriminate literal between figurative
languages because some statements can appear literal when they’re
really figurative. Also, this competency was not reviewed because
I assumed that they already mastered the skill which some of them
did not.
Item number 6 got 73 errors out of 125 students because
students were not able to remember the elements of the short story.
Also the teacher did not thoroughly discuss the competency due to
lack of time.

Analysis of Least Learned Skills

ENGLISH 9
2nd Quarter
S.Y. 2019-2020

Out of 35 students, 30 got the wrong answer in item number 17

because students chose the wrong adverb that would fit the
sentence. To use the correct adverb, students must have a
comprehension of the statement and some of them just lack
understanding.
Students needed to analyse literature as a means of valuing other
people and their various circumstances in life in item number 6 but they
failed to provide the correct answer. This is a least learned skill of
the Grade 9 students because they need to comprehend and understand the
poem in order to give its mood. Students should read more to increase
their level of comprehension.
Item number 3 got the third highest number of errors. The competency
(EN9V-IIf-28: Determine the vocabulary or jargons expected of a communicative style) required
understanding to determine the meaning of the underlined words.
Probably students got erroneous answer because the statement did
not give clues to lead students to get the correct answer. The
teacher should use the word in 2 or more sentences so that students
would have an idea of the definition of the word.
This competency (EN9RC-IId-19: Get information from various print media like brochures,
pamphlets, periodicals, and audio-video recordings) was also considered as least
learned skill of the students. If students were not able to review
the concepts they would be confused of the right answer. Probably,
students were not able to study on this specific skill though the
teacher discussed it to them.
Using conditionals in expressing arguments is also one of the
least learned skills in English 9. The students must be able to
complete the statement with the correct form of verb based on the
rules of conditional statements. Maybe the students need more
drills in order to totally master this skill.

Analysis of Least Learned Skills

ESP 8
2nd Quarter
S.Y. 2019-2020

57 out of 62 students got the wrong answer in item number 22.

It is considered as the least learned skill in ESP 8. The question
required the students to analyse the story in order to make the
right decisions. The options were all quite similar and thus
confused some of the students and they got the wrong answer.
This competency (Nasusuri ang mga impluwensya ng kanyang kapwa sa kanya sa
aspektong intelektwal, panlipunan, pangkabuhayan, at pulitikal.) belonged to the least
learned skill in ESP 8 because this skill asked the students to
examine the influence of his fellows in relation to his cognitive,
social, political aspects. They must use their understanding to
really get the best answer though all choices can be somewhat
applicable.
Item number 14 got the third highest number of errors because
students have varied opinions about having friends with their
opposite sex. Their opinions and experiences affected them in
choosing the correct answer.
The fourth competency (Nahihinuha na: Ang pagiging ganap niyang tao ay matatamo
sa paglilingkod sa kapwa - ang tunay na indikasyon ng pagmamahal) in item number 8 is also
a least learned skill. Students must truly understand the reasons
for divisions that hinder communication and making friends. Most
questions in ESP 8 always require deeper analysis of statements in
order to answer the questions correctly.
This competency (Natutukoy ang magiging epekto sa kilos at pagpapasiya ng wasto at
hindi wastong pamamahala ng pangunahing emosyon) is the fifth learned skill in
ESP 8 because there can many reasons that would affect our
decisions especially our emotions. In question number 26, students
need to analyse the scenario that affected the emotions of the
character that made him decide to do something. The answer of the
students will also depend on his/her understanding based on his/her
experience in life. All options were applicable but students need
to pick the best answer which some of them failed to do.

Analysis of Least Learned Skills

ENGLISH 8
1st Quarter
S.Y. 2019-2020

Out of a 50 item test, item number 31 got the highest number

of errors in which the competency “Read intensively to determine the author’s purpose”
becomes a least learned skill in English 8. It is because students
must have good reading comprehension skill in order to give the
best answer.
This competency “Use appropriate cohesive devices in composing an informative speech”
was one of the least learned skills in English 8 because students
should be given ample time to master their writing skills using
the appropriate cohesive devices. The correct cohesive device
would give cohesion and coherence in the thoughts of the sentences.
Using of parallel structure is a competency in item number
35. In order to make the sentence structure correct, the word/s
used should be parallel. Most students got the 3rd highest number
of errors in this item because they did not master the competency.
Item number 2 with the competency of using the correct sounds
of English was a least learned skill because commonly we stressed
words incorrectly and we used these words in everyday communication
as if they were correct. Because students, might determine the
stress of the word in the wrong syllable and thought that it was
the right stress.
Scan for logical connectors to determine the text type was
the competency in item number 25. This was also a least learned
skill in English 8 for the 1st Quarter. Students were confused with
the right answer because the options were almost the same. The
connectors can be somewhat correct but they have to pick out the
best answer.

Analysis of Least Learned Skills

ENGLISH 9
1st Quarter
S.Y. 2019-2020

In item number 28, the competency “Explain how the elements

specific to a genre contribute to the theme of a particular literary
selection” was the considered as the least learned skill. It is because
the skill required the students to understand in order to analyse the
correct answer. They must possess comprehension skill so that they can
provide the correct answer.
Item number 5 got the second number of errors. The students
should have identified the correct answer if they knew the literary
devices that the teacher discussed. It can be that the students
did not review their lesson.
The competency “Use appropriate punctuation marks and capitalization to convey meaning” in
item number 20 was a least learned skill because students did not
analyse the sentence in order to put the appropriate punctuation
mark to it.
Use normal and inverted word order in creative writing was
the competency in item number 13. It was a least learned skill
because students were not given plenty of drills to master this
skill especially in transforming normal word order to inverted
word order and vice versa.
Analyze literature as a means of discovering the self was a
competency in item number 29 which was considered as a least
learned skill because students have to make analysis in order to
draw a conclusion. Students’ comprehension level must be
strengthened so that they can provide the correct answer.
