Brief History: BARANGAY ANUPUL

Barangay Anupul has a total land area of 7, 427 hectares, 96.3 percent of which is
utilized for agriculture and about 2.0 percent used as commercial and 1.7 km. from the
poblacion proper and it is politically subdivided into puroks.

Anupul is a mainland wherein its topography is considered plain and large area have
hilly terrain.

It has one climate classification and there are two type of season namely, dry and rainy
seasons. The soil found in this barangay is sandy clay and loamy.

Long time ago, Barangay Anupul was still undeveloped and the first person to live was
the couple named Roberto and Aserta. Their means of livelihood was planting of different kinds
of vegetables and other crops through kaingin system, which support them in their subsistence.

Until one day, God blessed them a child, they baptized and name him Mariano, which is
fit for him because of his masculine physical development. Mariano was industrious and
courteous which he inherited from his parents. Because of his character traits, he was fondly
and popular called “ANO” by his parents since he was small. Then time goes by, Ano got
married to the daughter of Mang Pedro and Aling Juana, named Polonia and nickname Pol.

When the parents of Ano died, the couple inherited the land which they left behind.
Time had passed and there was a gradual development of their barangay so as the
population increases. One day they called an assembly meeting to decide the name of their
barangay so that when somebody would ask the name of their place, they could answer it.
And it was decided that their barangay will be called “ANO-POL” named after the couple
Mariano and Polonia.

Brief History: BARANGAY BANABA

Barangay Banaba is located in the southern east part of the town of Bamban. Long time
ago, Barangay Banaba was full of Banaba plants, where the barangay derive its name.

The location of this is adjacent to the town proper, and large part of the land was
converted into subdivisions.A part of the poblacion of the municipality is in Banaba.

With the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo last 1991; this Barangay was hardly hit by lahar flow.
Almost the whole of the barangay was covered by lahar that residence populace were forced
to leave their house and their belongings to save their lives.

To date, most of the residents of this badly damage barangay resettled at the Dapdap
Resettlement site of this municipality.

Brief History: BARANGAY BANCU

Barangay Bangcu is the first and oldest barangay of Bamban. Its first settlers were Juliano
Pasion, Dionisia Mallari and a few others. It derives its name “Bangcu” from the word bangcu
because there were many “Bangcu” (upuan in Tagalog and chairs in English) in every
household. This barangay was blessed with abundant crops due to its fertile soil and irrigated
land which made the influx of more people to live here.

During the 40 days rain in 1972, this barangay was badly affected and half of it became
part of the Parua River. Its settlers transferred to the neighboring barangay of San Pedro, La Paz,
Dela Cruz, Banaba and San Nicolas and the remaining land is being cultivated again for their
livelihood.

Barangay Bangcu was also badly damaged by lahar, especially its farm lands and most
of its people resettled at Dapdap Resettlement of this municipality.

Brief History: BARANGAY CULUBASA

Barangay Culubasa is located in the northern east of Bamban. It is about 4-5 kms. from
the town proper.

Almost 80% of the land area is irrigated and is devoted to agriculture. The major crops
grown are rice, sugarcane, peanuts, corn and different kinds of vegetables, orchards consisting
of calamansi and other fruit bearing trees are also planted in the barangay. The soil is mostly
sandy and clay loam.

Majority of the populace are Roman Catholic and mostly speaks Pampango as their
dialect.

Barangay Culubasa got its name when pioneers from Pampamga and other
neighboring towns settled in the town of Bamban in the 10th century. Bamban then was vast
wilderness,the settlers then can own land by clearing places and one of these place was
Culubasa.

According to legend, people who settled in this place planted a lot of squash plants,
locally called “Kulubasa” which thrives abundant in this barangay. This finding spreads like
mushroom everywhere. The early settlers then were seen going to this place just to pick-up the
fruit of the said vegetables and when asked where they got these fruits / vegetables, they
answered … from Culubasa.

Brief History: BARANGAY DELA CRUZ
(Location of the SRNHS)

Almost a decade, this place was only a sitio of Barangay San Roque. San Roque is the
oldest barangay of the municipality of Bamban.

Don Cenon Dela Cruz and his family were the first residents of this sitio, which turned into
a barangay later. He was known everywhere especially the neighboring places of Bamban.
When he died, the places were named after him because of his kindness and noble deeds to
his barrio people. He was also the first person who cleared this area and turned later into a
place suitable to live in. This is one of the reasons why the community people called the place
in honor of him.

Today, Barangay Dela Cruz has total households of 180. The people celebrate their feast
during the birth anniversary of Don Cenon Dela Cruz which is the 10th month of the
year…OCTOBER.

Brief History: BARANGAY LOURDES

Upon the petition of the majority of the voters in the area, Barangay Lourdes was
established. Two-thirds of the Municipality Council of this town and with the recommendation
of the Provincial Board of Tarlac, the place was named after Our Lady of Lourdes.

The first barangay officials were elected on July 22, 1966. These officials were:

Mr. Gregorio Cunanan Councilman

Mr. Emilio Santos Councilman

Mr. Avelino Visda Councilman

Mr. Osias Dimatulac Councilman

Barangay Lourdes is known for its Grotto. It is located almost on the top of Mountain
Tandiwa which is overlooking Pampanga, the nearby town of Tarlac. Motorist and commuters
go to the Grotto Shrine to pay homage and get a glimpse of the shrine and offer a short prayer
for their daily need-existence.

The first residents were families of Nicolas Rivera, Pablo Rivera, Francisco Campo, Felipe
Jacobe, Juan Visda, Simon Visda and Juan Milan.

Brief History: BARANGAY LA PAZ

During the pre-war days, Dungan Tapayan was the former name of Barangay La Paz
and it was changed to La Paz in honor of the Virgen Dela Paz or Apong La Paz, the patron saint
of the barangay.

This barangay is situated north east of the town, adjacent to Barangay Dela Cruz, San
Roque, and Banaba. The inhabitants are mostly Pampango and few are Tagalog, Ilocano and
Bicolano who had intermarriage in the locality. This barangay is adjacent to the town proper.

This barangay has an area of 391 hectares with a soil type of sandy, clay and sandy
loam.

Brief History: BARANGAY SAN NICOLAS

Before the Spanish regime, a certain Spanish Tribe came in this town of Bamban. He
convinced the residents to put up a small chapel in honor of St. Nicolas for worship. Many
inhabitants of this place came and went to this chapel. During the month of September, most
of the inhabitants were going to this place and worship because it’s the feast day of St. Nicolas.
So this barangay was named after its Patron Saint St. Nicolas.

Barangay San Nicolas is the second oldest barangay of this municipality.

A small area of the barangay was devastated by lahar where some residents
evacuated to Dapdap Resettlement area and some at Mainang Resettlement site located on
the eastern part of Barangay San Nicolas.

This barangay has a wide area of hilly/mountain where we can find different fruit
bearing trees as a source of livelihood of the populace, other than planting rice and
vegetables.

Barangay San Nicolas is known for its caves found in Sitio Panaisan.
Brief History: BARANGAY SAN PEDRO

Before the Spanish regime ended in 1886, a certain Impong Maria Galang almost a
century of age moved to this place from Kabuyo. There were eight houses only in this area that
belong to the Victoria’s, Miranda’s, and Icban’s.

One of these families extract juices from the sugarcane which were made into
“tinaklob” and “inuyat” molded in half of coco shells and tin cans. This is done through the
expertise of the maker. The sugarmill owned by the Spaniards was still operational and the
place called “sinipit” occupied by the hacienda. A certain encomiendero visited the place, he
saw the sugar extractor and approached him and asked what is he doing and the extractor
answered “Sinisipit ko po ang tubo” Sinisipit… murmured by the Spaniard. From time to time it
was uttered by the people of this place that’s why it was popularly called “Sinisipit”.

In 1964, the Bamban Mayor Pedro Mendiola then urges the council to change the
barangay name, Sinipit. At that time there were many Pedro’s in the place, so with the name
of the Mayor and the council agreed to adopt the name Pedro. Since St. Peter is their Patron
Saint and so this place was renamed San Pedro and no longer Sinipit.

Brief History: BARANGAY SAN RAFAEL

Barangay San Rafael, one of the barangay of Bamban lies adjacent to the towns of
Capas and Concepcion. It lies at the Sourthern part old Concepcion municipality and eastern
part of Capas Municipality. It has a total land area of 1,954 hecatres and it is 1 km. away from
the National Road and 6.5 kms away from the Poblacion of Bamban. It has a Sitio called
Madera where people are engaged in the wood curving industry.

San Rafael became a barangay when residents of Cutcut evacuated to this place after
fire destroyed their houses. San Rafael then was just a Sitio of Barangay Pacalcal, now named
Virgen Delos Remedios which is situated 2.6 kms. away from the main barangay.

This barangay was also called “Tela-Silid” (Room like) due to the place that it is
surrounded by rice fields and sugar plantation.

During the term of then Mayor Pedro Mendiola, San Rafael became an independent
barangay since it reached the population of 500 people. And this barangay was named after
Mr. Rafael Manguerra in 1965 who’s a pioneer of this place. And by coincidence, its Patron
Saint is San Rafael de Archangel.

Brief History: BARANGAY SAN ROQUE

San Roque is the oldest barangay of the municipality of Bamban. It was named after its
Patron Saint, “San Roque” who is known to be a protector of the sick.

Its feast day is on August 16. It is located near Barangay Dela Cruz. During the flow of
lahar, due to eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in 1991 this barangay was partly damaged in the
southern part where people were resettled at Dapdap Resettlement area.

Brief History: BARANGAY SAN VICENTE

Barangay San Vicente was known before as “Sapang Kawayan” which included Sitio
Balacbac and Sapang Marimla. It was only during the year 1967 when then mayor Mendiola
recommended the creation of Barangay San Vicente and it was approved by the Provincial
Board, and was named after Vicente Narciso which was elected as the Barangay Captain.

This barangay is situated on the western most part of Bamban. It has a wide range of
pasture and agricultural land. It’s fully developed when the Sacobia Development Authority
was established in 1979. This authority is geared to alleviate the living conditions of the
populace in the area, developing reverted base lands long agro-industrial lines and to
accommodate resettled depressed families in the area.

Barangay San Vicente is fully-developed thru the different line agencies of the
government involvement in various projects in the area.

With the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo, Phase I of this barangay was buried by lahar and led
to the destruction of houses, properties and agricultural land which became a big body of
water, now known as Sacobia Lake.This lake became the main source of livelihood of farmers /
residents now a day thru fishing.
Brief History: BARANGAY STO. NINO

Long time ago Barangay Sto.Nino is still a forest area and there were only few people
living in this place. It was only inhabited on the mid-sixty’s this barangay has a rich fertile soil
with different crops planted and sold as their source of livelihood. It also has a wide green
pasture land and about 80.0 hectares is for planting rice and sugarcane due to its plain area.

Barangay Sto. Nino is an agricultural area and almost all its people depend on farming
for their daily subsistence.

Before, Barangay Sto.Nino is only a part of Barangay San Nicolas until a resolution was
filed seeking the creation of the Barangay. And it was finally approved on February 12, 1966 by
the Provincial Board and it was named Barangay Sto.Nino after its Patron Saint Sto.Nino.
Brief History: BARANGAY DELOS REMEDIOS

After liberation, the American Government installed rdar antenna in this area of
Bamban. They named the place, Board Site.

The old people told how Pacalcal place got its name. According to their forefather at
that time, there were many Pacalcal plants. These plants bear coffee shaped seeds with soft
and broad leaves and soft stems. The ribs of the leaves are like a “Pacalcal ng Manok”, that is
why they call it Pacalcal plants.

Since there were many plants I this barangay, the place was called Barangay Pacalcal.

But after Congressman Aquino pass a bill in Congress, changing the name of Barangay
Pacalcal to Barangay Virgen Delos Remedios, in honor of its Patron Saint, Virgen Delos
Remedios. And so it was approved and from then on the name was changed to Barangay
Virgen Delos Remedios.
Brief History: BARANGAY MALONZO

Barangay Malonzo was a former Sitio of Barangay Bangcu. It was created a Barangay
during the mid-year of 1953 – 1957. It was named after Don Antonio “Toyo” Malonzo, the first
settler in this remote area.

Barangay Malonzohas one Sitio named Sitio Tibagin. This Sitio was a former part of
Concepcion town and had been claimed by the municipality of Bamban based on the
cadactral survey of boundaries last 1979.

This barangay has a total land area of 1,564 hectares. Most of the land is for agricultural
use, but during the flood of 1972, the once productive land was silted and devastated and
most of the croplands became part of the river and to the worst, when Mt. Pinatubo erupted in
1991, the whole barangay was buried with thick lahar and buried houses and properties in this
area.

The populance of this Barangay are now in Dapdap Resettlement Area of this
municipality.
