Research Title #1 : Attitudes and Motivation towards Second Language

Learning

Researcher Major : English

Researcher : Kerwin Morcilla

Aira Nido

Charity Joy Suarez

Site of Implementation : 1st Year College

Background and Rationale

Second language learning is defined as a conscious process where the

learning of another language other than the First Language takes place.

Strategies in language learning, or the steps that one take to learn a language, is

very important in ultimate language performance. It is defined as “specific

actions, behaviours, steps, or techniques — such as seeking out conversation

partners or giving oneself encouragement to tackle a difficult language task —

used by students to enhance their own learning” (Scarcella & Oxford, 1992, p.

63). There are also a number of factors that affects the learning of the second

language. Some of these are the motivation and attitude. According to Alaga

(2016), motivation and positive attitude have been widely viewed researchers as

key factors that influence in the success of learning second language. Gardner

(1985) defined motivation as an extent to which the individual works or strives to

learn the language because of a desire to do so and the satisfaction experienced

in the activity. Also he defined attitude as the persistence shown by the learner in

striving for a goal. He suggests that attitudes are related to motivation by serving

as supports of the learner’s overall orientation.

The study will be conducted in Laguna State Polytechnic University SPCC.

The respondents will be the first year college English majors, since they knew

already the language and we want to know their motivation and attitude in

learning the second language.

Conceptual Research Questions

1. What is the student - respondents’ level of motivation towards learning the

second language?

2. What is the student - respondents’ level of attitude towards learning the second

language?

3. Is there significant relationship between the student – respondents’ profile and

level of attitude and motivation towards learning the second language?

Conceptual Research Objectives

1. To determine the student - respondents’ level of motivation towards learning

the second language.

2. To determine the student - respondents’ level of attitude towards learning the

second language.

3. To determine if there is a significant relationship between the student –

respondents’ profile and level of attitude and motivation towards learning the

second language.

Research Hypothesis

Attitude and motivation helps the learners to learn the second language.

Methodology

This study will use a descriptive research design. The respondents for this study

will be the first year college, English majors of LSPU SPCC. For the instrument,

the researchers will conduct a survey that is the “The Attitude and Motivation Test

Battery” (AMTB) which was adopted from Gardner and Lambert (1985) which

includes items measuring all factors that affect attitude and motivation. The said

instrument consists of 64 statements with 6 – point likerts.
