CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING
INTRODUCTION

In our everyday living we are using language to communicate to other people around us,

it plays an important aspect in life and culture of every nation throughout the world. Language

ties and binds people together though they are not with the same raise and they have different

religion that is practicing. Nowadays English language is used as a medium of instruction in the

formal schooling of the Filipinos to become globally competitive, this language is considered as

one of the Major language that is used in the world especially if business is concerned. It helps

us to be connected with the rest of the world because, business man coming from the different

side of the globe are studying English for them to be able to make connections between the other

foreign countries, but this is just one of the benefits of learning the English language.

English language is also important in Education, and also for the other subjects because,

being able to put your thoughts into words are already a skill that not all of us can do it

simultaneously. It is important that we know how to put our thoughts into words because if we

can’t, though how much brilliant your idea is, it will just count for nothing. So, for us to be able

to attain this skill we should practice our oral, written, and listening skills, but the most important

thing that we must do is improve our reading comprehension skill. Reading is a potent skill

because if we are good in reading with comprehension or interpreting, then all our interpretations

are always accurate then we can be proud that what we are sharing is reliable and credible. One

who knows how to read well has an edge on the field.


Through the English language one can easily join the stream of the world. Person can

keep abreast with all the hottest issues that we are encountering, especially in Politics, Our

World Economy, Arts, Education, Health, Sports, and all other information that we want to

know. On other words it will serve us our connection to the different parts of the globe.

There is a need to conduct this research in order to find out the factors that affect the

reading comprehension of the students.

Yes, all of us can read, but reading is not considered as reading if we don’t understand

what we read.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

GENERAL OBJECTIVE: This research aims to determine the factors that affect the reading
comprehension of the third year English major students in Abaño Campus, SY/ 2015 -2016.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: Specifically the target of this study is to answer the following
questions:

1. What are the factors in reading that obstruct the comprehension of the third year English

Major students?

2. What are the factors in reading that will enhance the comprehension of the third year

English Major students?

3. What are the Activities that will develop the reading comprehension of the third year

English major students?

BASIC ASSUMPTIONS:

1. There are different factors that affect the reading comprehension of the Third year

English major students in Abaño campus.

2. There are factors in reading that can improve the reading comprehension of the Third

year English Major students.

3. There are possible activities to develop the reading comprehension of the English major

students.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY:

This research will help the English Major students of Abaño campus to be proficient in reading,
ability to read well is vital because this well help us to access different kinds of information, and
it is made possible through reading.

This study will benefit the following.

To the Students.
The outcome of this study give knowledge to the students and will motivate them to read
and improve their reading skills.

To the Teachers.
The product of this research will inspire the teachers to look for different approach and
strategies to teach English Subject and the proper way of how to read and apply it to the real life.

To Parents.
The findings of this study will give them the knowledge to assess whether the level of
learning and comprehension of their children are improving.

To School Administrators.
This study will guide them and serve as a source of information about the problem with
the reading comprehension of the students and find ways to resolve the said problem in for the
institution to be able to produce quality and values laden graduates.

To Future Researchers.
This research will help the future researchers that will study this problem in conducting
their study. And also this would provide them related studies for the kind of problem or study
that they would like to pursue.
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

The main focus of this study was to find the factors that affect the reading comprehension

of the third year English major students in Camarines Norte State College Abaño

Campus.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

For the purpose of this research and to assist better understanding, the terms indicated below are
define as follows:
AFFECT – Means to produce an effect of to influence something.

READING – This is one of the four macro skills which uses both sensory and mental process
involving the use of the eye and the mind. It is also a process of grasping the meaning from a
printed text, symbols, and other written symbols.

FACTOR – This refers to the element contributing to particular results.

PERCEPTION – It refers to obtained knowledge that is perceived by our 5 senses.

SKILL – Refers to the ability of an individual to manipulate things.

COMPREHENSION – This refers to the mental grasping, understanding.

RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Related Literature

Edward Lee Thorndike (1999) said that reading is the application of thinking or reasoning skills

as observation, prediction, verification, etc. In analyzing an author’s meaning, he considered

reading as reasoning.

Secretary Riley (2001) as cited by Valle emphasized that reading skills should be developed with

the students for if not, it would be impossible for them to make assignments and to prepare their

lessons. They may not be able to participate in any class activities and most especially with the

problem they may encounter.

Getrude Hildreth (1999) as cited by Valle considered books as ways to a wider world that the

immediate surrounding provides books serves to interpret other cultures and epochs in history

than one’s own. The printed word has the power to revolutionize the ways of thinking and living.

Universal literacy helps the individuals to understand the society and his role as a citizen, as a

worker and individual with his own personal needs and problems.
Related Studies

In the study conducted by Balane et. al., “Difficulties in reading Comprehension. Among

freshmen students of college of arts and sciences Camarines Norte State College revealed that

the reading difficulties of the first year students were understanding the context, synthesizing a

particular selection or any literary piece, inability to expand vocabulary difficulty in getting the

main idea, logical organization and poor reading comprehension. They concluded that more

difficult for the students were textbook, newspapers, magazine, and pocketbooks.

In the study of Datu et. al., (1999) entitled “Reading Comprehension of the fourth year students

of Pambuhan National High School.” The following findings were revealed the level of reading

comprehension of the fourth year students was deficient, techniques and strategies of and

strategies of the teachers, instructional materials and media were variables that affect the

comprehension of the students.

In the study of Gomez et. al., (2001) entitled “Factors Affecting the Reading comprehension of

the Grade V pupils laboratory Elementary Camarines Norte State College.” Revealed that the

factors affecting the reading skills were emotional well-being learning school environment,

language background, physical factors intellectual attitudes and interest. They suggest that the

students should be supervised not only by the teachers but also the parents.
Synthesis of the state of the art

The reviewed literature and study are related to the present study since the topics all dealt with

reading.

The difference of the study of Balane, Datu and Gomez et. al., to the present study were

apparent. There are differences were on the focus, Balane et. al., determined the difficulties is

reading comprehension, Gomez et. al on the factors that affect reading skill while the present

study on the factors that the readining comprehension. They differ on the respondents except to

Datu whose respondents were also fourth year high school students. They also differ in setting on

locale.

The similarity of the previous studies to the present study was also visible. All the previous

studies to the present study was also visible. All the previous researchers used the same method

which was descriptive. They used the same statistical treatment which was percentage, ranking,

and weighted arithmetic mean. The also aim to improve the reading comprehension of the

students.

CHAPTER III
METHODOLOGY
This chapter presents the research method to be use in gathering data and development of the
research instrument.

Research Design

Method to be use:

The researcher will use the descriptive survey method to attain the objectives of the
research. The researcher will create a questionnaire that will be the main source of information.
And to make the study better the researcher will consult to the persons who are knowledgeable to
produce an accurate and reliable results.

Instrumentation:
The researcher will gather data and information from the survey questionnaire that is
given to the students.

Procedure:

The researcher will ask the approval of the dean of the school to conduct a study
regarding the factors that affect the reading comprehension of the third yea English major
students. Then after that the researcher will create a time frame for him to be guided with the
things that will happen and also the researcher will prepare the list of activities that he will
conduct during the study. The questionnaire will serve as the main tool in gathering the
responses of the survey. The questionnaire must be clear, and direct to the point to avoid
inaccurate response.

Subject of the Study:


This study covered the third year English major students in Abaño Campus, SY/ 2015 -
2016.
Statistical treatment:
To facilitate the analysis and interpretation of the gathered data, the researcher will use the
percentage techniques as tools in interpreting the data.
The percentage is computed as follows:
𝑃 = 𝑅 ÷ 𝑁 × 100
Where:
P= percentage
R = number of responses
N = number of respondent
