Chair:
T.T. Duong, J.C. Harris, T.V. Linh,
Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Dinh N. M. Quan

Instructions: Each student is allowed a scientific calculator and a maxi-

mum of two double-sided sheets of reference material (size A4 or similar),
stapled together and marked with their name and ID. All other documents and
electronic devices are forbidden. Students are not allowed to borrow anything
(especially calculators and reference material) from each other.

Question 2. (10 marks) The speed of a racing car (in meters per second)
was recorded every second over the first ten seconds of a race. The data
is shown in the table below. Use trapezoidal rule to estimate the distance
travelled by the car during this ten second period.

Question 3. (15 marks) A company plans to build a rectangular warehouse

which is divided into three rectangular rooms by two internal walls as shown
in the figure below. The total length of all the walls (external and internal) is
to be 120 meters. What is the maximum possible total area of the warehouse?

Solutions for Final Calculus I Semester I 2015-16

Question 1. (15 marks) By L’Hopital’s rule,

x − sin x [ 00 ] 1 − cos x [ 00 ] sin x

lim = lim = lim
x→0 x(1 − cos x) x→0 1 − cos x + x sin x x→0 2 sin x + x cos x

Question 2. (10 marks)

Let the speed be v(t) where tRis time in seconds.
10
The distance travelled is s = 0 v(t) dt.
We approximate the integral using trapezoidal rule with ∆t = 1:
1
s= 0 + 2(15 + 28 + 41 + 53 + 65 + 72 + 76 + 79 + 80) + 82 = 550 (m).

Question 3. (15 marks)

Let x be the total width and y the length of each room (in meters).
The total length of the walls is 2x + 4y = 120 so y = 30 − x2 .
2
The total area is A(x) = xy = x(30 − 12 x) = 30x − x2 .
Differentiating gives A0 (x) = 30 − x.
So A0 (x) > 0 if x < 30, A0 (30) = 0, and A0 (x) < 0 if x > 30. Hence the
maximum value of A(x) is A(30) = 30(30) − 12 302 = 450 and the maximum
possible total area of the warehouse is 450 m2 .

Hence√f 0 (x) = 0 ⇔ x = 4 − x2 ⇔√x = 2. Similarly, f 0 (x) > 0 when
x < 2 and f 0 (x) < 0 when x > 2. √ By the
√ First derivative test, the
maximum value of f (x) on [−2, 2] is f ( 2) = 2 2.
