Answer all questions
1 The following test results were obtained on a 20 kVA, 2500/250V, 50 Hz single 5
phase transformer,
OC test (LV side): 250 V, 1.4 A, 105 W
SC test (HV side): 104 V, 8 A, 320 W
Compute the parameters of the approximate equivalent circuit referred to the low
voltage side and draw the circuit

2 Two 100 kW transformers each has a maximum efficiency of 98% but in one, 5
the maximum efficiency occurs at full load while in the other, it occurs at half
load. Each transformer is on full load for 4 hours, on half load for 6 hours and
on one tenth load for 14 hours per day. Determine the all-day efficiency of each
transformer

3 A d.c. series motor, with an unsaturated field and negligible resistance when 5
running at a certain speed on a given load takes 45 A at 450 V. If the load torque
varies as the cube of the speed, calculate the resistance required to reduce the
speed by 25%.

4 A dc shunt motor rated at 12.5 kW output runs at no load at 1000 rpm from a 5
250 V supply, containing an input current of 4 A. The armature resistance is 0.5
Ω and shunt field resistance 250 Ω. Calculate the efficiency of the machine when
delivering full load output of 12.5 kW, while operating at 250 V.

5 Draw and explain the starting of 3-phase slip ring Induction Motor. 5
6 A 4 - pole, 50 Hz, 20 kW, 3-ph induction motor has friction and windage loss of 5
2.5 % of the output. The full load slip is 4%. Compute for full load (a) the rotor
P.T.O.
copper loss (b) the rotor input (c) the shaft torque (d) the gross electromagnetic
torque.

The following test results are obtained from a 3 phase 6000 kVA, 6600 V, star
connected, 2-pole, 50 Hz turbo-alternator:

With a field current of 125 A, the open-circuit voltage is 8000 V at the rated
speed; with the same field current and rated speed, the short circuit current is 800
A. At the rated full-load, the resistance drop is 3 %. Find the regulation of the
alternator on full-load and at a power factor of 0.8 lagging.

8 A 75 kW, three phase, Y-connected, 50-Hz, 400 V cylindrical rotor synchronous 5

motor operates at rated condition with 0.85 p.f. leading. The motor efficiency
excluding field and stator losses, is 90% and Xs = 2 Ω. Calculate (i) mechanical
power developed (ii) armature current (iii) back emf (iv) power angle and (v)
maximum or pull-out torque of the motor.
