Dear Jon Vigne, Director of Special Educator,

I was excited to learn of the job opening for a School Counselor at Colorado School for the Deaf (CSD). My
education coupled with my past work experience, makes me an ideal candidate for the position. I have a
multitude of experience serving the deaf and hard of hearing community and it is through this role that I hope to
become an important member to the school, while gaining experience that will serve me for the rest of my
career.

As a former assistant to a Student Development Specialist at the National Center of Deafness at CSUN, I am
experienced in efforts that promote the academic and social success of students. As an assistant, I served as a
mentor to all prospective students and created workshops that introduced students to college life with an
emphasis on academic excellence. Through this role, I was able to provide students with a smoother transition
between schools. I also have experience in conducting assessment exams that allowed me to successfully guide
students in reaching their academic and career goals. Moreover, my employment at numerous schools has
introduced me to a variety of policies that will allow me to quickly learn and understand CSD’s practices so that
I can meet program objectives while maintaining the integrity of the Colorado School for the Deaf. I also have
the ability to provide administrative support to faculty, students, and other personnel in a fast-paced
environment.

In addition, my recent internship at the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf (PSD) has provided me much “hands-
on” experience in counseling students from a variety of backgrounds. As an intern, I have been able to develop
strong relationships with the students, faculty, and other school representatives which are essential in
collaborating with others. As a school counseling intern, I have facilitated communication between students
and teachers by making students feel safe and comfortable so they are willing to freely discuss any concerns. I
am constantly motivating and informing students about higher education by presenting students with new
opportunities and providing them with realistic ways to meet their goals. At PSD, I have learned the importance
of being flexible and adaptable to any situation since each situation is different, delicate, and requires attention
to detail. I also have had the opportunity to implement the American School Counselor Association’s National
Model, which is a framework for a comprehensive, data-driven school counseling program. With the help of
this framework, I have developed lesson plans for students to meet the National Standards of American School
Counselor Association.

With the skills mentioned above and more, I believe I am a well-qualified candidate for the opportunity. After
you’ve had an opportunity to review my attached resume, I'd like to set up an appointment to talk with you
further about how my skills and experience could benefit the department. In the meantime, please feel free to
email me at Jennifer.Spensieri@gallaudet.edu. Thank you for your consideration and I am hopeful that you will
provide me with the opportunity to contribute my dedication in continuing to encourage and inspire students at
Colorado School for the Deaf.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Spensieri
