Excellence- quality of being extremely good


In all the four terms, the word Excellence is a constant. English Dic onary meaning of the word "Excellence" is
being outstanding or "the best" in whatever you do. When we try to or tend to achieve or strive to be
outstanding or the best in whatever we do we are trying to achieve Excellence. When it is about Personal goals
in life eg. excelling in academics, being the best employee in our office, being successful in achievement our
personal objec ves, one can say that it is personal excellence. Similarly a company or a corporate body or a
business in general would have its own objec ves, viz. making profits, doing something good or worthwhile for
the society what in business parlance we say crea ng value for its shareholder or for the society at large it
would be termed as business excellence.
Organiza ons to achieve the objec ve of mee ng customer expecta on, create effec ve business strategy,
keep external stakeholders happy need to have a strong Opera onal Excellence. Why Opera onal Excellence
because un l and unless the organiza on is not culturally strong, people centric, have intellectual systems, it
will not be possible to collaborate to meet the business objec ve and the acumen to reach Business
Excellence. To an extent Opera onal Excellence cannot be the only driving force un l & unless Process
Excellence infuses standard processes there by allowing people to deliver consistently posi ve outcomes with
minimal varia ons and wastes.

In-order that the right processes are created or to create a responsible but carefree culture allowing
employees to collaborate and work together in achieving business goals, Personal Excellence plays a pivotal
role. Un l and unless we keep challenging our minds in be ering ourselves, gain knowledge, become and
expert, master a trait we will not be able to move from Ape Age to what we are/ want to be. We will not be
able to create standardized process or achieve Process/ Opera onal/ Business Excellence.

Personal Excellence
Everything starts with an individual therefore Personal excellence is a founda on of all three other excellence.
Open mind, readiness to change for be erment, out of the box thinking, influencer and determina on to do
the best are few traits to achieve personal excellence. Ac ons of each individual in the organiza on directly
impact the bigger goals of the organiza on.
Producing your best in any given situa on,It is defined as the ability to create solu ons in difficult situa ons to
enable yourself to overcome these situa ons successfully. it can be defined as below.

➔ who Maintains the confiden ality of sensi ve informa on.
➔ who Shows personal determina on, op mism, resilience, and stress tolerance despite difficul es and
setbacks it tough situa ons.

goals

➔ who Con nually seeks and learns from feedback. who Learns quickly and applies new informa on on
the job.

Personal excellence comes with experience to execute a par cular process with minimum varia on in
execu on, and results obtained are accurate and repeatable keeping the remaining process variables constant.
As excellence is a compara ve term, one should strive to perform be er than what he/she does last me. It’s a
con nuous process of improvement. Whenever we start execu ng a new task, we may observe some varia on
that might not be there in subsequent execu on. It’s purely individual percep on to perform best every me,
by working on self-mo va on or for achieving the set goal and moreover when we work on the environment
of excellence that created by us (as a con nuous effort to perform best), always help in organiza on to achieve
the process and opera onal excellence.

However many mes it is observed that organiza ons do huge investment in taking the personal excellence of
their employees from one level to next level, some mes they succeed as well, as this a ribute depends upon
individual and their will to learn new things. We want to make a point here that there are people who are good
in learning new things and thinking innova vely, at the same me there are people who are good at execu on,
they execute same thing every me without much varia on. And organiza on needs both of these kind of
people, but ra o ma ers. And many mes organiza ons struggle to maintain that, and they have people to
design the process but they do not have somebody who can execute the same and that leads to failure. So,
personal excellence is very important for any organiza on, and not only in one domain but also in all the
func ons to execute the process in the same way with minimal varia on.
Process Excellence
It is relates to a process being effec ve (minimal waste) and efficient (minimal varia on) leading to a consistent
output. Objec ve is to make the process - stable (consistent output) and capable (able to meet customer
requirements).It is the domain of Six Sigma and Lean. rocess excellence means making the processes so
efficient and robust so that there is minimum wastage and minimum varia on too. Process excellence ensures
that quality products are produced consistenly.
Process excellence is a near to perfect process that can sa sfy or delight the customer.Process excellence can
be achieved through various techniques such as lean, six sigma etc. An ordinary employee can maintain the
process, but cannot improve it a be er manner. Though many automa on for various process had come to
reduce human effort and me, it is the personal who maintain it. Whatever automa on may come, there must
be a decision maker. The personal excellence plays a major role in the decision making. This is where thr
personal excellence play a major role in process excellence. So process excellence can be facilitated a person
who is competent and thrives for excellence. P Ex involves the study of process, metrics, devia ons leading
towards the customer sa sfac on an voice of process.
Opera onal Excellence- is the coming together of the various units/teams within a business and execu ng the
business strategy more consistently and reliably than the compe on. It reflects the way how a person,
process, unit, team, organisa on excel at parameters such as Cost, Human Resources, scope, me, quality etc.
Opera onal excellence process excellence plus some a en on to HR, culture and systems thinking)- It builds
on the concept of end-to-end process flows in core and support processes, including organiza on's culture
(and with it HR) in its domain. when personal excellence and process excellence are achieved and company is
able to achieve the set targets with minimum varia on in desired outcome in batch to batch manufacturing
and day to day opera ons, that leads to opera onal excellence , opera onal excellence can be achieved by
company or a team within a company .
In an organiza on, there are several processes. One process does not define organiza on's capability. So all the
processes are interrelated and interac ve processes. Only when all processes are controlled and monitored ,
this leads to opera onal excellence. This organizing and studyin of all processes in some carried out the quality
team and the management representa ve. Again the personal excellence shall play a major role. The team
shall be competent and self driven for personal excellence. All the levels og all processes always contains the
quest of personal excellence. Opera onal excellence involves leadership, mo va on, principles and tools for
sustainment for the improvement.
Business Excellence- is the adop on of outstanding prac ces in managing the organisa on and achieving
results. These include (but not limited to) con nuous evalua on of the market and compe on, internal policy
assessments, being flexible with business strategies and goals (for course correc on), building a culture of
excellence and adop on of best prac ces. These prac ces evolve into business models outlining how world
class organiza ons should operate.An organiza on can have excellent processes and products but if its strategy
is wrong or if its results are poor, it s ll has a long way to go to achieve Business Excellence. The final results of
Business Excellence are visible in the Products and/or Services to customer and other stakeholders.
Business excellence can be defined as achieving higher level and consistency of performance in the opera ons
of an organisa on..it is achieving perfec on in achieving the goals of the organisa on by increasing overall
efficiency of the opera on by minimising waste in produc on of goods and services and increasing loyalty of
employees.It is constant evalua on of policies and Standard opera ng procedures in order to iden fy areas
which have scope of improvement.
Summary:

• Business Excellence – The pragma c pursuit and delivery of outstanding results for all stakeholders.

Best approach may be to achieve the Business Excellence is that the that Senior Leadership should Create the
Environment, Culture, training and necessary tools to enable effec ve Personal and Process Excellence for all
the business processes including opera ons.

Is it possible to achieve in the absence of one another?
These are inter-related with each other with Personal Excellence being an over-arching theme and Process
Excellence, Opera onal Excellence and Business Excellence underline it. Secondly, without Process Excellence,
one cannot achieve Opera onal Excellence and without Opera onal Excellence one cannot achieve, Business
Excellence.
Personal Excellence --> Process Excellence --> Opera onal Excellence --> Business Excellence
What should an organiza on pursue?
For the holis c growth of an organiza on, the organiza on must work for taking care of all its stakeholders, so
it is not an "either-or", but a sustained work on all the excellence parameters.
What kind of approaches, techniques are likely to be included in these terms?
Self Introspec on, Self Discipline, Time Management, Project Management, Lean, Six Sigma, Business
con nuity plan, Disaster recovery plan, Con nuous Learning and development, Risk Mi ga on
