Bump Test Guideline/Procedures

Probe A

Probe B

To the To the

1. Remove the axial probe(s) away from the shaft by approximately 3-4mm.
2. Bump the shaft towards the probe. (The nearest position to the left with
refer to the diagram above)
3. Adjust and gap the axial probe(s) with an output voltage of approximately –
6Vdc. For example, V1=-6Vdc.
4. Bump the shaft away from the probe. (The furthest position to the right
with refer to the diagram above)
5. Note down the output voltage, say for example, V2=-12Vdc.
6. Calculation:
a. To calculate the total float zone of the shaft
½ Total float zone = (-12-(-6))/2
= 3 Vdc
= 3/7.87 mm
= 0.3811 mm
b. To calculate the final gap voltage if the shaft position is
i. Extreme end to the left (towards the probe) = -10 – (-3)
= -7 Vdc
ii. Extreme end to the right (away from the probe) = -10 – 3
= -13 Vdc

7. Final gap the thrust probe according to bi or bii above depending the final
position of the shaft.
