INTRODUCTION

In every classroom, there are a lot of students having different goals. They have

their own way of achieving it, students may exposed to different struggles that will

challenge their determination, and these challenges can cause stress that later on

becomes depression and when it forsaken, it can lead in committing a suicide.According

to De Man (1988) suicide attempter tend to have experienced a greater number recent

streesful life events. Jacobs (1971) noted that teenage attempter often have a long

history of difficulties that culminates during adolescence.

More over Cantor (1989) and Deykin, et. al (1994) cited the following factors

related to the rising rate of adolescent suicide: a high level of social and academic

competiton and pressure, violence that children and adolescent are exposed to lack of

socially ways for youngsters to express anger, lack of connection to religion, abuse of

drugs and alcohols, social isolation, accurence of depressive illness, and greater

availability of hand guns among others. In addition to life stress, academic pressure,

lives hard. But it’s not how bad these probles are that matters, it’s how the individual

knows to handle these problems. Some people does not have any option but to commit

suicide because they think that ending their problems means ending their lives as well.

Based on Yang and Clum (2000) that early life events have a mild impact on suicidal

behavior, but a stronger impact on cognitive deficits, which in turn have a strong impact

on suicidal ideation.

students attempt to suicide. This will be conducted at Las Pinas City National Senior

High School-CAA Campus and will be focus to grade 11 senior High School students

taking General academic strands. For the reason why researcher want to easily access of

getting information. The setting was in the school; the interview process was held in the

classroom of the respondents during the School year of 2019-2020.

Review of Related Literatures and Studies

This chapter presents the review of related literature, and the definition of terms

for better understanding of the study and to provide support from the subject being

discuss.

Related literature

According to Johnson et.al., 2002. Relationship with other people is a significant

factor affecting suicide behavior. Young people who have experienced childhood and

family abuse like physical violence, sexual or emotional abuse, and maltreatment

among others have high risks of committing suicide.

Stated by Foster,2011. Traumas arising from disciplinary or legal crises,

financial problems, academic or work-related problems, and bullying are also

significant factors affecting suicide.

According to Butler et.al,. (1994) In addition to life stress, academic pressure,

work related problems, interpersonal difficulties, death of loved ones, illness, and loss

of relationship have been found to be significant stressors of young people.

Based to Priester et.al,. (1993) Employed poor grade in midterm exam as a mild,

naturalistic stressor and successfully predicted depression, hopelessness, and suicidal

ideation in a college population.

According to Cole et. al.,. (1992) high-suicidal-risk subjects were found to have

had experienced more life tress in the previous year, and significantly poorer quality

friendships, and lower self-esteem.

Stated by schotte et. al,.while examining a model of suicide behavior in a group

of college-aged suicide ideators, indicated that college students suicide ideators

experienced higher level of negative life stress , were more hopeless , and had higher

level of depression than their non-ideating peers. Poor problem solvers under high stress

were found to be significantly higher on suicide intent than any other group.

Moreover tang et al. (2009) examined the rate of suicidal attempt and its

correlates on a sample of 10,233 adolescent students living in southern Taiwan. They

found that 9.1% of the participants reported a suicidal attempt in the preceding year.

Female gender, low self-esteem, weekly alcohol use, illicit drugs use, depression, high

family conflict, low maternal education level, poor family function, low connectedness

to school, low rank, poor felling in peer group, and drop out from school were

associated with adolescent suicidal attempt. The rate of suicidal attempt was found to be

high in Taiwanese adolescent, and multidimensional factors were correlated to

adolescent suicidal attempt.
