WHY SHIRISH BHERI?

He design the the structure in such a way that get interconnect with nature .They strive to address his life
concerns of man moving further away from nature, from his fellow human beings and from his own self.
Through his work, Shirish Beri probes the multisensory and the immeasurable dimension of space while trying
to evoke a reflective pause amidst todays clutter
and background noise. He feels that issues of
sustainability can be aptly addressed only through
the right attitudes and goals. His designs try to
achieve an inherent sense of unity and harmony
with various natural and man-made elements and
forces.
He has designed a number of campuses for
national & regional level institutions for research,
rehabilitation, health care and education, along
with various other types of buildings.

“Though he appreciate the work of a number of

modern architects, like Wright, Corbusier, Kahn,
Sterling, Foster, Ando, Doshi, Kanvide, Correa
and so many others, the major inspiration for me
has been from the past – the monuments as well as
the vernacular architecture ( Architecture without
architects). I have been travelling, observing,
imbibing various architectural responses to life
and reinterpreting them in contemporary
architectural vocabulary.

Architecture as a shaper of space (Space as an

important attribute of our lives) has been explored
by me in various ways – as a symbolic metaphor,
an agent of socio cultural change, as an interpreter
of Life’s values, as an expression and barometer of human aspiration and sensitivity, as a relevant, functioning
organism within the great interconnected environmental totality.” (beri, s. (n.d.). , 2014)

NTRODUCTION

Born in 1950 at Pune, India

CAREER : Ar. Shirish Beri graduated
from School of Architecture,
Ahmedabad, India in 1974.

ARCHITTURAL STYLE :

Famously called “The man of nature”, he is an extraordinary mastermind who plays, takes care of nature. He
is in synchronisation with nature. He have observed this in most of his designs. He takes utmost care to not to
use any harmful materials that hamper with the natural look, ambience and vibes. He uses natural, locally
available materials to capture the essence of that place.

He imparts peace in his every design. His designs were implemented only to those places where they were
needed the most, such as Beach house, Devgad, Sanjeevani Vidylaya Panchgani, S.D.M Ayurveda Hospital
and College, Hassan. But his designs cannot be a module which can be replicated in any other part of the
country. They are strictly regional and so tremendous changes are needed to be done so that they can be
replicated.

If these designs are the need of the modern cities, are these designs self-sufficient so that they can stand in the
cities? The focal point is peace, can it be achieved?

He has emphasized on the art of using local materials, but this cannot be the case for the cities. The materials
do not impart strength due to which those structures cannot be sustained, due to pollution and many other
factors.

Space was a neglected factor in his works as acres and acres of land was given for design and construction.
Cities lack space, and so his kind of projects cannot be created in cities. Even if he tries to cramp up his designs
for the cities, they lose their essence and the work cannot be identified. Every architect should have a style of
his own but also, he/she should think about various other possibilities and challenges that may come up in near

HISTORY

Beri Architects and Engineers was formed as a

proprietary / partnership firm in 1946 by distinguished
architect Late.Mr. R.S. Beri. After modest beginnings,
the firm soon grew because of R.S. Beri unique designs
and dedication to client service.

Sons, Mr. Pramod Beri and Mr. Shirish Beri joined the firm expanding horizons and the project scales especially
in industrial and institutional architecture. The firm turned private limited in 1983 and has hence won several
national awards and international accolades. Beri Architects and Engineers Pvt. Ltd. is considered one of India’s
top most architectural firms not only because of its designs but also because of its high level of ethics and quest
for client satisfaction.

The firm is now headed by Mr. Nitish Beri and continues to grow and innovate. In 2011, the firm initiated a new
studio, which is dedicated to master planning, and township planning headed by Mr. SwapnilPatil.

PHILOSOPHY

“It is our duty as an architects to redefine and expand

upon the brief given by the client so as to give him
much more besides satisfying the functional requirements
in terms of the design's environmental relevance, quality
of space and JOY.”

For Shiri bhri , it is difficult to imagine any activity as unrelated or cut off from the totality of life. Architecture too, in
its greater vision, is life itself, thereby communicating, responding and belonging to the fascinatingly interrelated web
of life.
Thus, any serious architect's approach to his architectural design would evolve from his understanding of life. To him,
the outer manifestations in space are reflections of the quality of our inner space and vice versa.
In today’s technocratic consumeristic, urban life style, he feel concerned about various issues that are making our lives
as human beings poorer.

MERGING WITH NATURE:

Nature is central to Beri's architecture. When for a conventional designer the first thing would be to clear
the land, level the ground and build a concrete structure with a few gimmicks thrown in for visual pleasure,
Beri begins from the principle of least disturbance to the landscape. 'Spaces inspired by
nature' develops through eight essays; working with nature towards sustainability, spirit and space, learning
and teaching architecture, aesthetics of ethics in architecture, connecting to nature, our house as our larger
body, art as a metaphor in architecture and nature as art in architecture, and architecture without architects.
Each section opens with the theme; the philosophy is accentuated with Beri's poems, which are the essence
of his thoughts. There are several examples of his work with his initial sketches, plans and photographs which
to the layman and architect is a revelation of the master creator's visions. The different sections are not
water-tight compartments; on the other hand they flow in and out of each other, like the waters of a cascade.
Therein lie the enchanting quality of the writing; perhaps the flaw also, because the lack of linearity may not
be to the liking to some.
An architect is a very different creature, I always feel. There are two conflicting personas that he/she has to
possess. One is the lazy, moody, temperamental artist persona while the other is a professional, technical
and business persona! A successful architect is the one that keeps in balance both these personas. Because,
if one overpowers the other, then its a loss of design sensitivity on one hand, while professional conduct
takes a beating, on the other.

Ar Shirish Beri is a perfect embodiment of these two personas, each kept in balance. This has allowed him to
produce work as sensitive and vernacular as his own farmhouses in Konkan to modern educational institutes
that are larger than life. The canvas of his work is so varied and yet in each, we can see a subtle presence of
his philosophy that guides his work and his life. Ar Beri is very close to nature and that is embodied in every
small detail of his designs. The simplicity of his architecture, itself, is a statement that tells you that “Less is
More”

Modern material & modern design, but one that’s still rooted in context. The earthiness of Ar Shirish Beri’s
work is what appeals to me the most. Its almost nostalgic in feeling like something that is lost to time. And
yet, each of his buildings, carry an interpretation of the modern changes in our lifestyles. Every space in his
building is a tug of war, making people move ahead, but holding them back to their roots. Its as if the buildings
say “just wait for some more time, enjoy the past, learn from it and only then move ahead”. Every time I
look at photos of Beri’s farmhouse, there is a longing, an ache, that wrests my mind from the present to the
past. The tranquility of the space, asks you to slow down, spend time and not just rush past. I feel, so few
architects can create this experience in buildings. And once you have visited such spaces, you tend to lose
yourself. Time becomes just a fleeting moment. After visiting such architecture, the return to the present is
almost traumatic, like a blast of icy wind that hits you, as you step out into the cold reality of today!
Sustainability in Design emerged as one of the key philosophies of this century. Sustainability asks you to
define context, root itself in the vernacular and yet provide the trappings of modern lifestyle. For me, the
concept of Sustainability can be taught using Ar Beri’s work. His architecture is a perfect embodiment of
‘balance’ that needs to be struck to achieve Sustainability. Simplicity and Sustainability go hand in hand and
this can be truly experienced in Beri’s architecture.
I am no expert and very inexperienced to write much about Beri’s architectural philosophy or give comments
on his works, but I can surely say that his design touches the soul when you stand under its roof. Its like a
sculpture, but not just something to be looked at and admired, but to be entered and experienced.
Very few architects in the world have achieved this. And its befitting that Shirish Beri now sits amongst the
Masters.

Ar. Shirish Beri's works, which tend to reflect his values and concerns in life have been bearing their distinct
mark on modern Indian architecture since 1975. They strive to address his life concerns of man moving further
away from nature, from his fellow human beings and from his own self.

-Arcasia gold medal 2009-2010 for the best designed public-institutional building in Asia.

- Cityscape + Architectural review award 2006 at Dubai –in the first three from 260 worldwide entries

- Hindware Archidesign “Architect of the year award – 2006” from 270 Indian entries

- The J. K. Architect of the year - Commendation Award 1995 for residence design

- The international jury award at the “Ekotop film festival – 2007” in Europe for his documentary film “The Unfolding
White” from over 200 sustainable development films from all over the world.

This institute reinterprets traditional learning values and traditional Indian architecture in a contemporary
form. The values include learning in proximity with nature, learning from each other a high degree of
interaction and learning in a humane environment, as evidenced by the punctuating courtyards and warm
natural materials used throughout. The simple low-built structures respect the topography with no redundant
features and materials are local, low maintenance and built with local skills. Minimal embodied energy, natural
lighting and ventilation, and shading from plantings contribute to a campus that enhances learning and inspires

CONCLUSION

Looking at our national scenario of architecture and construction, one is appalled to note that sustainable
architecture is the farthest thing in the mind of our construction industry. Despite the ecological and
economical advantages of sustainable or green architecture, the industry spew forth concrete boulders all
over the land with scant respect for anything. It reflects the same irreverence that the majority of the
general public has for nature. The vernacular architecture, like agriculture, used to be sustainable until a
few decades ago when the veritable gold mine of construction industry was discovered. There existed a
culture which asked the permission of a tree before cutting it. There was a value system which was based
on harmonious co-existence with the rest of the world. Remnants of such lifestyle can still be found in the
remaining homesteads in the countryside. Each unit was self-reliant and self-contained. But the market
economy destroyed such traditional values.
It is in such a background that we should look at Mr. Beri's architecture. In his introduction, Beri is
succinct; the objective of the book is to appreciate the important correlation between the manner in which we
understand and live life, and the way we understand and practice architecture. He continues – my works are
not designed to create iconic, grand, exhibitionist forms or graphic compositions that attract the eye, but to
create more human, socially relevant, more natural and sustainable spaces that nurture the human
spirit. Herein lies Beri's philosophy, his vision and mission of architecture. This is the crossroads where we
decide to move on to the vast, deep hinterlands of Beri's world or not. This is where we begin the journey
into the 'meaningful interface of the enclosed space and the open space.
