1. (a) Define and explain about following antenna parameters:


i. Radiation pattern.
ii. Radian and Steradian.
iii. Radiation power density.
iv. Radiation Intensity.
(b) Calculate the power gain of a half wave dipole whose ohmic losses and directive gain are
7Ω and 1.64 respectively.

2. (a) What is short electric dipole? Explain.


(b) Obtain the relative amplitude of radiation, induction and electrostatic fields at a distance
of 2λ from a short current element having a uniform current of 1mA along its length.

3. What is antenna array? Explain about different types of arrays.

4. (a) Explain about the following in detail.


i) Resonant Antenna. ii) Non Resonant Antenna.
(b) Explain about parallel and series connection in rhombic antenna?

5. (a) Explain the concept of “array with parasitic elements” and give its radiation pattern.
(b) List out the designing formulae of Yagi-Uda array.

6. With reference to the horn antenna explain the following :

(a) Sectorial horn antenna


(b) Pyramidal horn antenna.

7. Explain the concept of wave propagation through the different layers of atmosphere.

8. (a) Derive the expression for the transmission loss equation.


(b) Determine the basic transmission loss in free space for.
i. d= 10km, λ = 20,000m.
ii. d= 107 km, λ = 3cm.

(b) Determine the maximum effective aperture of a beam antenna having (HPBW) of 300 and
350 in perpendicular plane intersecting in the beam axis. Assume small side lobes.

2. (a) What is retarded vector potential? Obtain the expression for retarded vector potential.
(b) What is the Lorentz gauge condition? Explain.

3. (a) What is scanning array? Explain use of this array in radar application?
(b) Show that a Dolph- Tehebysheff distribution gives Optimum distribution and minimum
side lobe level for a given beam width of major lobe.

4. (a) Explain the reason why length of a traveling wave radiation is multiple of half wave length.
(b) Compare resonant and non resonant antennas.

5. (a) What is folded dipole? Why the folded dipole is preferable as compared with other dipoles
and explain.
(b) Design 3 element Yagi-Uda array to operate at the frequency of 64MHZ.

6. (a) List out the types of horn antenna and explain what is optimum horn.
(b) Design the pyramidal horn antenna with the following details :
Mouth aperture = 10λ X 10λ
Frequency of operation = 5GHZ.

7. (a) What are the types of propagation and give the typical frequency range of each propaga-
tion.
(b) Write short notes on:
i. Ground wave attenuation.
ii. Wave tilt.

8. (a) Derive the expression for the LOS range of space wave propagation.
(b) Explain the effect of earth curvature on the space wave propagation.

3. (a) Enumerate the advantages and dis-advantages of linear arrays.


(b) Find the phasing required to steer a beam zenith to -400 for a 5-element array with 0.4λ
inter element spacing.

4. (a) Describe the characteristics of long wire antenna. Sketch their pattern for length of
i) λ/2. ii) 5 λ . iii) 20 λ
(b) Distinguish between narrow band and wide band antennas.

5. (a) What is a parasitic element? Explain when the parasitic element acts as a reflector and
director with the help of proper diagram.
(b) Explain the characteristics of folded dipoles.

6. (a) Explain the sectorial E-plane horn and sectorial horn and list out the applications of horn
antenna.
(b) Calculate the mouth height and θE of a sectorial E-plane horn antenna having the length
45λ and frequency is 12 GHZ. Assume δE = 0.2λ.

7. (a) Define and explain the ground wave propagation.


(b) List out the advantages and disadvantages of ground wave propagation.

8. Derive the expression for the following :

(a) Radius of curvature of ray path for tropospheric waves.

(b) Find the radiation pattern of 4-isotropic elements fed in phase, spaced λ/2 apart by using
pattern multiplication.

4. (a) Show that a single wire excited with a travelling wave current is an end fire antenna with
a sharp null along the direction of extension of the wire.
(b) How directivity is increased in V-antenna? Explain.

5. (a) Derive the expression for the impedance of a folded dipole.


(b) Explain in what way the parasitic array is different from other arrays.

8. (a) With the help of neat diagram derive the expression for the electric field strength at the
receiving point due to the space wave propagation.
(b) List out the disadvantages of space wave propagation.
