Lesson 1: Getting started + Listen and read – Period 37
I. Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to know some environmental problems,
their effects and solutions.
II. Language contents:

Warm up - Play a short clip of environmental problems Wholeclass


(3’) - Ask Ss: “What is the clip about?”
- Introduce the topic of the lesson: “In this lesson,
we are going to learn about environmental
problems, their effects and solutions”

Pre-reading 1. Matching: (5’)


(17’) - Show the pictures and the words Wholeclass
- Clarify the requirements
- Read through the words once
- Elicit by asking questions:
a. Is it in the country or city? How is the air?
b. What can you see in the picture? What is the
plane doing?
c. What is this?
d. How is the water?
e. Where are the people? What are they doing?
f. Where is the man? What is he using to catch
fish? Pairwork
- Ask Ss to discuss in pairs in 2 minutes Individual
- Call on some Ss to give answers. T confirms the
answer key. Wholeclass
- Go through the pictures and words again to clarify
the meaning
- Ask Ss: “Which of these environmental problems
occurs in your home village?” Individual
- Call on 1-2 Ss to answer
2. Set the scene: (1’) Wholeclass
(Show the picture) “Mr. Brown is talking to some
volunteer conservationists. Where are they? What
are they going todo? Read the passage to know
more about them.”
3. Vocabulary: (8’) Wholeclass
- Show the pictures and introduce the words.
- conservationist - garbage dump
- plastic bag - provide
- shore - disappointed
- rock - spoil
- Ask Ss to repeat twice. Then read in chorus Individual
- Call on 2 Ss to read again Wholeclass
- Check the vocabulary:
+ rub out the words
+ ask Ss to look at the screen and match (2

4. T/F prediction: (3’)
- Show the statements
“Before reading, I’d like you to predict 5 below
statements”
1. The speaker is Mr. Jones .
2. The listeners are the volunteer conservationists.
3. They are going to clean the beach.
4. They are divided into four groups.
5. If they work hard today, they will make the Wholeclass
beach a clean and beautiful place again.
- Go through the statements and ask Ss to predict
“ Now, listen and read to check your prediction”
- Play the tape twice Individual
- Ask Ss to read qucikly in silence to check
- Check with some Ss. Show the answers

While- 1. Matching:(7’)
reading - Clarify the requirements: “Match the names in Wholeclass
(17’) column A with the tasks in column B. Then write
full sentences”
- Model for Ss
- Set the rules and divide Ss into 4 groups: Groupwork
+ each team has 6-7 Ss
+ each team is given 1 worksheet
+ match in 3 minutes then stick the sheet on the
wall
+ the first team with the most right answers is the
winner
+ team 1 comments team 2 and vice versa
+ team 3 comments team 4 and vice versa Wholeclas
- Give feedback and key
2. Writing full sentences: (3’) Wholeclass
- Model with one sentence
- Ss prepare for 2 minutes Individual
- Call on some Ss to give out the answers
- Write the answers on the board (Help Ss to
correct if necessary)
3. Aswering: (7’) Wholeclass
- Show the questions and go through them Pairwork
- Ask Ss to discuss the answers for 3 minutes (in
pairs) before playing games Wholeclass
- Explain the game
- Play the game
Post-reading - Show the questions and answers on the board and Wholeclass
(6’) lead to question 6+7: “Through 5 questions above,
we can see that Mr. Brown and the conservationists
are going to clean the beach to protect the
environment.”
- Show the questions on the board and clarify them
- Show the pictures to elicit Ss Pairwork
- Ask Ss to dicuss in pairs in 2 minutes
- Call on some Ss to give answers
- Comment and give feedback
Consolidation - Through this lesson, we know some Wholeclass
+Homework environmental problems, their effects and
(2’) solutions.
- Learn vocabulary by heart and prepare the next
lesson
