consumption of food crops fertilized by biosolids: A

Artigo Journal of Hazardous Materials, 30 December 2015, Vol.300,
pp.855-865 [Periódico revisado por pares]
The objective of this study was to perform a probabilistic risk
analysis (PRA) to assess the health risk of Cadmium (Cd), Copper
(Cu), and Zinc (Zn) through the consumption of food crops
grown on farm lands fertilized by biosolids. The risk analysis was
conducted using 8 years of historical heavy metal data (2005–
2013) of the municipal biosolids generated by a nearby
treatment facility considering one-time and long-term biosolids
land application scenarios for a range of 5–100 t/ha fertilizer
application rate. The 95th percentile of the hazard index (HI)
increased from 0.124 to 0.179 when the rate of fertilizer
application increased from 5 to 100 t/ha at one-time biosolids
land application. The HI at long-term biosolids land application
was also found 1.3 and 1.9 times greater than that of one-time
land application at fertilizer application rates of 5 and 100 t/ha,
respectively. Rice ingestion had more contribution to the HI
than vegetable ingestion. Cd and Cu were also found to have
more contribution to the health risk associated to vegetable and
rice ingestion, respectively. Results indicated no potential risk
to the human health even at long-term biosolids land
application scenario at 100 t/ha fertilizer application rate.

Artigo Complexity, 2019, Vol.2019 [Periódico revisado por pares]
Design, structure, modelling, and analysis of complex systems
can significantly benefit from a systematic approach. One way
to address a complex system using a systematic approach is to
combine creative and analytical methods, such as general
morphological analysis and design structure matrix. The aim is
to propose a framework to address complex systems in two
stages: first, formulation and generation of alternatives through
general morphological analysis, and second, improvement and
integration with design structure matrix for sequence
optimization and cluster analysis. Moreover, general
morphological analysis is further optimized through a novel
sensitivity analysis approach reducing up to 80% the iteration
time. The proposed approach is showcased in a case study of
sustainable policy formulation for a wastewater treatment plant
at a pulp and paper industry in Brazil. The results show that it is

hydrocarbons toxicity and sorption behaviour of biochars

sludge
Artigo Devi, Parmila ; Saroha, Anil K
Bioresource Technology, September 2015, Vol.192, pp.312-320
[Periódico revisado por pares]
The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) toxicity and
sorption behaviour of biochars prepared from pyrolysis of paper
mill effluent treatment plant (ETP) sludge in temperature range
200–700 °C was studied. The sorption behaviour was found to
depend on the degree of carbonization where the fractions of
carbonized and uncarbonized organic content in the biochar act
as an adsorption media and partition media, respectively. The
sorption and partition fractions were quantified by isotherm
separation method and isotherm parameters were correlated
with biochar properties (aromaticity, polarity, surface area,
pore volume and ash content). The risk assessment for the 16
priority EPA PAHs present in the biochar matrix was performed
and it was found that the concentrations of the PAHs in the
biochar were within the permissible limits prescribed by US EPA
(except BC400 and BC500 for high molecular weight PAHs).
risk analysis of PAHs was also determined.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study the environmental
indicators of an ISO 14001:2004 certified thermal power plant
located at Raiwind road Lahore. Design/methodology/approach
The research study included employee interviews, noise
monitoring, effluent and ground water sampling, stack emission
testing, and assessment of the solid waste management system.
Findings Semi-structured interviews randomly conducted with
employees showed a 57 percent environmental awareness
response. The stack emission results showed that the nitrogen
oxide (NOx) from engine no. 5 and 7 was 2,447 and 2,624
mg/Nm3 , respectively, higher than the World Bank limit of
2,300 mg/Nm3 as well as exceeding the 600 mg/Nm3 set by the
National Environmental Quality Standards (NEQS) with no
emission control technology in place. The ground water and
effluent samples were found unfit for irrigation purposes.

Influence of the Addition of Cotton Stalk during Co-pyrolysis Todas versões

with Sewage Sludge on the Properties, Surface
Characteristics, and Ecological Risks of Biochars
Wang, Zhipu ; Wang, Jian ; Xie, Like ; Zhu, Henan ; Shu, Xinqian
Artigo Journal of Thermal Science, 2019, Vol.28(4), pp.755-762
[Periódico revisado por pares]
Sewage sludge produced by municipal sewage treatment plants
can potentially be used as a biomass energy source because of
its high organic content. Presently, the conversion and
utilization of rapidly growing amounts of sewage sludge
represent an urgent challenge in China. Thermal conversion of
sewage sludge to biochar through pyrolysis is a promising
solution to this problem. However, biochar produced by
pyrolysis of sewage sludge alone has a poor pore structure as a
result of its low C content and high ash content. Furthermore, it
is enriched in heavy metals that may pose high ecological risks.
In this study, we addressed these issues through co-pyrolysis of
sewage sludge and cotton stalks (1:1, wt./wt.) at different
pyrolysis temperatures ranging from 350°C to 750°C. The
properties and surface characteristics of the biochars were
investigated. Meanwhile, the transformation behavior of heavy
metals during the co-pyrolysis process was studied, and the
potential ecological risks of heavy metals in biochars were
assessed. The results showed that elevated pyrolysis
temperatures reduced the biochar yield and C content of the
biochars, whereas such temperatures increased the pH value
and ash content of the biochars. The biochars prepared at
different pyrolysis temperatures were all mesoporous materials.
The elevated temperatures promoted the transformation of
heavy metals from mobile fractions to stable ones, thus
resulting in a significant decrease in the ecological risks. In
summary, co-pyrolysis of sewage sludge with cotton stalks
proved to be a feasible method for the conversion and
utilization of sewage sludge.

To explore the effect of different biochars on Cassia alata L.
growth and heavy metal immobilization in multi-metal mine
tailings, a 100-day pot experiment was conducted. Three
biochars derived from Hibiscus cannabinus core (HB), sewage
sludge (SB) and chicken manure (MB), were added to mine
tailings at rates of 0.4%, 1% and 3% (w/w). The results showed
that the root biomass, shoot biomass, plant height and root
length were 1.2–2.8, 1.7–3.2, 1–1.5 and 1.6–3.3 times of those in
the control group, respectively. Pb, Zn, Cu, Cd and As contents
in the shoot decreased by 63.9–89.5%, 46.9–66.0%, 32.7–62.4%,
40.4–76.4% and 54.9–77.5%, respectively. The biochar
significantly increased the pH and decreased the mild acid-
soluble Pb and Cu concentrations in the mine tailings.
Specifically, SB immobilized Pb and Cu better than MB and HB
did, although it did not immobilize As, Zn or Cd. Meanwhile,
more attention should be paid to the potential As release as the
biochar application rate increases. In...
