THE HOME FOR WOMEN/HOME FOR SEXUALLFOR

WOMEN/HOME FOR SEXUALLY ABSUED WOMEN

Introduction / Background Study:

Earth compromises of male and female fenders in every living organism since evolution.1qMale
and female both are equal and play a paramount role in the creation and development of their
families and the society in general.

Both the gender used to put equal efforts for procuring food (till the female attains at least the
puberty stage. For example, the Jenu Kuruba tribe of Karnataka, have adapted the profession of
honey gathering where till certain age both women went for gathering the honey, climbed the
trees but once the women attained her puberty stage she was left in the home. At the time when
humans were adapting agriculture practices for food, female were forced to stay at home to take
care of the stock and cook food, where male left for the cultivation, gone with a wrong pride of
fetching food ,as a result female was given least importance. Thus, given rise to gender inequality.

The same explanation was stated in chapter 15 of contemporary American society, which states
at the time when human societies were abandoning their wanderlust in favor of agriculture
settlements, the first linking’s of gender inequality were taking route.

Gender inequality encourages to show dominance of one gender upon the opposite gender. The
act of gender inequality has led to violence against women which resulted in physical and mental
suffering of women.

In present day scenario, the same is to sexually abuse and harassment, in whole over the world
this act of sexual harassment is taking place.
 Global estimates published by WHO indicate that about 1 in 3 (35%) of women worldwide
have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner
sexual violence in their lifetime.
Sexual harassment is unwelcome sexual behavior that’s offensive, humiliating or intimidating
which is major problem today. This sexual harassment is violence against women which dates to
history of mankind, several forms of abuse have been described in our ancient epics like
Mahabharat and Ramayana and this happened to be violence against women.

As a result, Depression, suicidal ideation, low birth rates, abortions, and risk of infections have
been reported after violence. As Once afflicted with violence, the chances of re-victimization are higher
and more traumatizing. This is one of the major problems the world which is to be taken serious and
solutions are to be drawn for a better future of women .

Aim:
The Aim of The Thesis Is to Design A home, connect the spaces for the sexually harassed women
to heal from their past trauma through therapy, life skills programming and move forward in life.

Need for study:

A study by the WORLD Policy Analysis Centre revealed more than one-third of the world's
countries have no laws against sexual harassment at work, leaving nearly 235 million women
vulnerable. Where laws exist, they are often weak, or their related policies, practices and
resources are too inadequate to be effective.
Women in India the status of women in India has been subject to many great changes over the
past few millennia. From a largely unknown status in ancient times through the low points of the
medieval period, to the promotion of equal rights by many reforms, the history of women in India
has been eventful. So the status of women has been traced by dividing into historical phase’s
Ancient society, Medieval society, and Modern society.

Women in Ancient Society:

In ancient India, the women enjoyed equal status with men in all fields of life. Later 500 B.C, the
status of women began to decline with the Smritis and with the Islamic invasion of Babur and the
Mughal empire and later Christianity curtailing women’s freedom and rights. The women enjoyed
freedom, Status and prestige in the society but did not last long and women finally settled down
to an indoor life.

Women in Medieval Society:

The Indian woman’s position in the society further deteriorated during the medieval period
when sati among some communities, child marriages and a ban on widow remarriages became
part of social life among some communities in India. In some parts of India, the Devadasi or the
temple women were sexually exploited. Violence against Women in India was widely practiced
especially among Hindu Kshatriya rulers. The women lost their entity in the 18th century and till
the beginning of the 19th century women were totally and forcefully sublimated male
superiority, physically and intellectually.

Women in Modern Society:

Women’s participation in the workforce as well as in other activities increased during the 19th
and from the early period of 20th century due to the upliftment of women started by the
influence of social reforms. As far as India is concerned, the social structure, cultural norms and
value systems are important determinants of women’s role and their position in society India has
one of the most impressive sets of laws for women. The state to practice protective
discrimination in favor of women.

During the 7th century, particularly in southern parts of India during the reigns of the Cholas,
Chela’s, and Pandya’s the women had the tradition of devadasi culture. The women were
married to god and had to entertain people by different art forms. They were well treated and
respected and held a high social stratum in the society. But in present day, the women who
faced sexual harassment are neither accepted by the society nor treated well by most of society

The issue of gender-based violence in

India has been hiking up over the past
couple of years. And with substantial
data, it proves one thing: rampant
domestic violence against women in
India is a threatening reality.
Every third women, since the age of
15, has faced domestic violence of
various forms in the country,
reported the National Family Health
Survey (NHFS-4) released by the
Union health ministry. Thus,
incubating a new round of debate
about the cultural underpinnings to
domestic violence.

In 2016, 29 lakh FIRs were registered

in India. Delhi and Kerala — among
the most literate states — had the highest crime rate.
But there is clear evidence of under reporting,
comparing the most recent police report on sexual
violence with the most recent nationally representative
household surveys shows less than 0.1% of women who
were victims of sexual violence went to the police.

The total crime rate—number of crimes per one lakh of

the population—against women has gone up from 16.3
in 2007 to 53 in 2016.
Rapes have risen by 88% since 2007, in terms of
incidences, while the crime rate has spiked from 1.8 to
6.3.
