WORKSHEET 1

Read the story below. To check how well you note details, complete the given graphic
organizer that follows.

An unemployed graduate woke up one morning and checked his pocket. All he had left was
$10. He decided to use it to buy food and then wait for death as he was too proud to go them.
He was frustrated as he could find no job, and nobody was ready to help him.

He bought food and as he sat down to eat, an old man and two little children came along
and asked him to help them with food as they had not eaten for almost a week. He looked at
them. They were so lean that he could see their bones coming out. Their eyes had gone into the
socket.

With the last bit of compassion he had, he gave them the food. The old man and children
prayed that God would bless and prosper him and then gave him a very old coin.

The young graduate said to them “you need the prayer more than I do”.

With no money, no job, no food, the young graduate went under the bridge to rest and
wait for death. As he was about to sleep, he saw an old newspaper on the ground. He picked it
up, and suddenly he saw an advertisement for people with old coins to come to a certain address.
He decided to go there with the old coin the old man gave him. On getting to the place, he
gave the proprietor the coin. The proprietor screamed, brought out a big book and showed the
young graduate a photograph. This same old coin was worth 3 million dollars. The young
graduate was overjoyed as the proprietor gave him a bank draft for 3 million dollars within an
hour. He collected the Bank Draft and went in search of the old and little children.

By the times he got to where he left them eating, they had gone. He asked the owner of
the canteen if he knew them. He said no but they left a note for you. He quickly opened the note
thinking it would lead him to find them.

This is what the note said: “You gave us your all and we have rewarded you back with the
coin” Signed God the Father The Son and The Holy Ghost. I Kings 17:10-16; Matthew 11:28-30.

LESSON 19

IDENTIFYING TOPICS, MAIN IDEAS, AND SUPPORTING DETAILS

PARAGRAPH- is a group of sentences related to a particular topic or a central theme. Every

paragraph has a key concept or main idea which is considered the most significant piece of
information the author wants to convey.

MAIN IDEA- is a “key concept” being expressed by the text or paragraph. It is the most central
piece of information the author wants you to know.

Topic- is the broad, general theme or message. Tells what all or most of the sentences are about.

Details- describe or explain the main idea.

It is important to find main ideas when reading because you can’t comprehend the subject
matter. If you haven’t identified the topic, the main idea, and the supporting details.

The ff. tips are suggested for you to better understand what you are reading.

Tip#1- As soon as you can define the topic, ask yourself

Tip#2- Most main ideas are stated or suggested early in a reading; pay more attention to the
first three of any passage, article, or chapter.

Tip#3- Pay attention to any idea that is repeated in different ways.

Tip#4- Once you feel sure you have found the main idea, test it.

Tip#5- The main idea of a passage can be expressed in a number of ways.

Tip#6- If you are taking a test that asks you to find the topic the thesis or theme of a reading,
don’t let the terms confuse you, you are still looking for the main idea.

GLOBAL WARMING

Hollie Riebeek
Over the last five years, 600 scientists from the Intergovernmental panel on limate
change sifted through thousands of studies about global warming published in forum ranging from
scienfic journals to industry punlications and distilld tha world’s accumulated knowledge into this
conclusion: warning of the climate system is unequivocal” far from being some future fear global
warming is happening now and scientists have avedence that humans are to blame for decades
cars and factories have spewed billons of tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere caused
temperatures to rise between 0.6`C and 0.9`C (1>08`F) over the past century> the rate of
warming in the last 50 years was double the rate observed over the last 100 years temperatures
are certain to go up further

but why should we worry about a seemingly amall increase in tempaerature? It turns out
that the global average tempreture is quite stable over long periods of time and small chengeg
in that temperature correspond to enormous changes in the environment For example, during the
last ice age, when ice sheets a mile thick covered north America all the way down to the northern
states, the world was only 9 to 15 degrees, fahrenheit colder than today.much of modern human
cevilazation owes its existence to the stability in the average global temperature since the end of
the last ice age- a stability allowed human culture to transition from roaming, hunter to gatherer
societies, in to more permanent, agriculture-supporter communities. Even the temperature change
of a degree or to that has accured over the last century is capable of producing significant
changes in our environment way of life.
In the future, it is very likely that rising temperature will lead to more frequent heat waves, and
virtually certain that seas will rise, which could leave low-lying nations awash in seawater.
Warmer temperature will alter weather patterns, making it likely that there will thousand of
years. To gain an understanding of global warming might impact humanity, it is necessary to
understand what global warming is, how scientist measure it, and how forecast for the future are
made.

1 Give the meaning of this words: (1) accumulated (2) unequivocal (3) spewed(4) enormous(5)
