A. Research Questions
1. How Elllo can improve the student’s listening comprehension ?
2. How the students perception toward Elllo ?

B. Theoritical Framework
1. The Definition of English Learning
Learning is a broad term. Learning includes all activities which affect
children. Along with the growing process, the mental development of the child
occurs. As a result, changes take place in his behavior continuously. The child
goes on learning through experiences.
Various psychologists and educationists have defined the concept and
meaning of learning in their own way. Some define as a process, some as a
change in performance and some define learning as acquisition and retention of
knowledge. According to Gestalt’s view, “The basis of learning is to gain
knowledge after observing the whole structure. Responding towards the entire
situation is learning”.
Kurt Lewin has presented the field view of learning and explained The
learning as the direct cognitive organization of a situation. Motivation has a
significant role & place in learning”.
According to Woodworth, “The process of acquiring new knowledge and
new responses is the process of learning”.
G.D. Boaz (1984) observes learning as a process. According to him
“Learning is the process by which the individuals acquires various habits,
knowledge, and attitudes that are necessary to meet the demands of life, in
general”.
According to Cronbach, “Leaning is shown by a change in behavior as a
result of experience”.
Pavlov has said, “Learning is habit formation resulting from
conditioning’.
According to Kingsley and Garry, “Learning is a process by which
behavior is originated or change through practice or Training”.
In the words of C.E.Skinner, “Learning is the process of progressive
behavior adoption.”
“in reference to language, competence is one’s underlying knowledge
of system of a language its rules of grammar, its vocabulary, all the pieces of a
language and how those pieces fit together.

2. The Definition of Listening

Listening is an invisible mental process, making it difficult to describe.
Listeners must discriminate between sounds, understand vocabulary and
grammatical structures, interpret stress and intention, retain and interpret this
within the immediate as well as the larger socio-cultural context of the
utterance (Wipf, 1984). (Rost, 2002) defines listening, in its broadest sense, as
a process of receiving what the speaker actually says (receptive orientation);
constructing and representing meaning (constructive orientation); negotiating
meaning with the speaker and responding (collaborative orientation); and,
creating meaning through involvement, imagination and empathy
(transformative orientation). Listening is a complex, active process of
interpretation in which listeners match what they hear with what they already
know.1

3. The Definition of Elllo

English Language Listening Library Online (ELLLO) is a website
which provides free English listening activities. The website, created by Todd
Beuckens, an English teacher based in southern Japan, contains over 2,000
listening texts. One feature that distinguishes ELLLO from other native-
speaker listening resources is that the former contains video or audio featuring
speakers from not only the inner-circle countries where English is spoken as a
primary language by native speakers but also speakers from the outer, former
British colonies, and expanding circles (Kachru, 1985). As a consequence,
ELLLO provides a rich volume of authentic listening materials that enable
students to experience the usage of English as a Lingua Franca. Illustrated in
Figure 1 below, along with the audiovisual content, the website presents
additional listening activities. One of the biggest advantages of this site is that
students or teachers can select content graded for different levels. Within the
site, users can search for texts and apply filters for a theme, topic, country
(accent) or activity. Texts are either audio or audio-visual and texts come in a
range of discourse styles (e.g., monological and dialogical texts). Users can
stream listening texts directly from the website, within the ELLLO mobile
application or through the music streaming website/applications SoundCloud
and the elllofriends YouTube channel. Evidenced in Figure 2, ELLLO users

can simultaneously read-whilelistening to a text, take a post-listening quiz
(which is corrected by the website) and learn key terms or interesting language
found within a text. All supplementary tools and activities are freely available
as online-activities and users can download PDF worksheets connected to a
specific ELLLO text.2
C. Previous Studies
Students’ Perception toward English Listening Lesson Library Online (ELLLO)
Superiority and Weaknesses of ELLLO
Based on the interview result, all interviewees agree that ELLLO is a good
supporting media in learning listening. One reason why they said that ELLLO is a
good supporting media in learning listening is because ELLLO has a lot of listening
material with different topics so that the students were more enjoy their learning. It
was proved by the answers of the interviewee when the researcher asked their opinion
about ELLLO. The second reason is because all activities are completed with quiz or
comprehension test that can help them train their listening comprehension ability. It is
showed from the sample of the students’ statement in the interview. The third reason
is because ELLLO can be used whenever they want whether it is at school, home, etc.
Besides it is easier for them because they do not need a book to learn listening but
they only need gadget or laptop which they always bring everywhere. The last reason
is because ELLLO is a free site. The do not need to pay for learning through this site.
Besides the strength, the interview result also showed some weaknesses of
English Listening Lesson Library Online (ELLLO). The first weakness of ELLLO is
sometimes the video cannot be played. So the students cannot do the comprehension
test in this activity as well because there is no video to be listened to as the material
for the comprehension test. That is because operation timed out. The second weakness
is there are some questions in the comprehension test that have more than one answer.
So, in order to get the correct answer, the students should click more than one option
in the answer options. The last weakness according to the students is the idioms given
in the script of views activities. The students said that that does not help enough
because the explanations of the meaning of the idioms given are in English recording
without text, so the students always feel difficult to get the real meaning of the
idioms.

dissertation).
Students’ Favourite Activities
English listening Lesson Library Online (ELLLO) has six kinds of listening
activity namely views, video, mixer, games, scene, and news centre. But based on the
interview result, the most favourable activities is Games. Twenty-two students said
that this activity is their favourite. It is chosen by the interviewee number 1, 2, 4, 5, 6,
7, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 24, 25, 26, 27, 29, and 30. (22students). The
reason is because in games activities the students feel enjoy and more relax because
besides the comprehension test there are also guessing picture session where they
should click the appropriate picture based on the audio they listened. By doing that
kind of activities, they feel like playing a game. Six students said that news centre
activity is their favourite.It is chosen by the interviewee number 3, 8, 12, 17, 23, 28
and 30 (7 students). The students chose this activity because the animation video in
this activity can be completed with the subtitle so they can train their listening while
practicing their pronunciation by following what the speaker are saying. On the other
hand, only one student who said that mixer activity is his favourite. It is chosen by the
interviewee number 28. She like this activity because according to her, it is more
challenging than others because there are six speakers who talk in the recording and
she should know the main point of each person's talk. ELLLO’s Role on the Students’
Listening Comprehension Since the students have used ELLLO for about six weeks,
most of the students stated that they got improvement on their listening
comprehension.3

D. MATERIALS AND METHOD

This study uses qualitative data approach to conduct this research. Qualitative
research is aimed to get deep understanding about organization or particular event
rather than describing in surface of large sampling from population. Furthermore,
Qualitative approach is aimed to reach the basic understanding through researcher
experience that is directly processed and integrated with the subject and location that
is in the form of real report with no additional or reduction, and factual field note.4

In developing the data base from which to make a representation, the
researcher would be involved primarily in:
1. Interview
In this research, the researcher interview the students of TBIG IAIN
Pekalongan to identify the problem of English listening ability. After method was
implemented and the source of the problem faced by the students in learning
English so that he can decide the most appropriate ways in solving it.
2. Documentation
In report a research, the researcher was reviewing and analyzing some
resources from the library resources. This is the attempt to know about another
informations that related with this study.
