ME 309 – HEAT TRANSFER

Answer the two questions announced in the Examination hall.

1. Derive general three dimensional conduction equation for the cylindrical co-ordinate
system. [CO-1]

2. (a) Explain the various types of Boundary conditions. [CO-1]

(b) Consider a large plane wall of thickness 0.4m, thermal conductivity 1.8
W/m.K, and surface area 30 m2. The left side of the wall is maintained at
constant temperature of 900C while the right side loses heat by convection to
the surrounding air at 250C with a heat transfer coefficient of 24 W/m2.K.
Assuming constant thermal conductivity and no heat generation in the wall (i)
express the differential equation and the boundary conditions for steady one
dimensional heat conduction through the wall, (ii) Obtain a relation for the
variation of temperature in the wall by solving the differential equation, and
(iii) evaluate the rate of heat transfer through the wall.
[CO-1][CO-2]

3. Superheated steam at an average temperature 2000C is transported through a steel

pipe of thermal conductivity of 50 W/m.K with inner diameter of 6 cm, outer
diameter of 8 cm, and length of 20 m. The pipe is insulated with a 4 cm thick layer of
gypsum plaster of thermal conductivity of 0.5 W/m.K. The insulated pipe is placed
horizontally inside a warehouse where the average air temperature is 100 C. The steam
and the air heat transfer coefficients are estimated to be 800 and 200 W/m 2.K,
respectively. Calculate (i) the daily rate of heat transfer from the superheated steam,
and (ii) the temperature on the outside surface of the insulation. [CO-1][CO-2]

4. Consider a solid stainless steel wire with a thermal conductivity of 14 W/m.K. The
wire has a diameter of 1mm, a resistivity of 45×10-8 Ω.m, and carries a current of 120
A, (i) Determine the rate of heat generated within the wire, (ii)Derive expression for
temperature distribution, and (iii) calculate the maximum temperature rise in the wire.
[CO-2]
5. Consider a very long rectangular fin attached to a flat surface such that the
temperature at the end of the fin is essentially that of the surrounding air, i.e 200C. Its
width is 5 cm, thickness is 1 mm, thermal conductivity is 200 W/m.K, and base
temperature is 400C. The heat transfer coefficient is 20 W/m2.K. Estimate the fin
temperature at a distance of 5 cm from the base and the rate of heat loss from the
entire fin. [CO-2]

6. (a) Derive an expression for the temperature distribution in a Lumped system in terms
of Biot number and Fourier number and also explain the criteria for lumped system
analysis. [CO-2]
(b) A 10mm copper (k = 380 W/mK) cable is to be laid in an atmosphere of 200C(ha
= 8.49 W/m2K). The surface temperature of the cable is likely to be 650C due to heat
generated within. Find the rate of heat loss (i) with critical radius of insulation (ii)
without insulation.[CO-2]
