Veritatis Splendor

This encyclical discusses the philosophical underpinnings of church teachings. It first discusses
their moral theology's vantage point which is its move against moral relativism. It attempts to
answer the question of human discernment of what is good and evil. The main argument is that
Truth is something we can determine, that there is a direct relation with a person's choice
between good and evil to God. Moral law is universal because it is found in every human's
condition. This means that cultural backrounds, traditions and upbringing does not in any way
affect what is good or evil. These are absolute truths inherent in man's curiosity and desire for
knowledge. And this truth is found when man asks God what is good. This where the Church and
its "magisterium" becomes a guide in finding truth amidst evil. What is even great about this is
that this divine law does not restrict freedom. The argument is premised on the principle that
freedom's goal is personal development and maturity. Thus, following God even promotes
freedom's purpose or goal. The encyclical is inclusive with other tools in discerning good. It
supports Natural Laws, and Conscience. Thus, man's inner dialogues and the use of reason are
valid means of discerning what is good and what is evil. Thus, all these moral indicators lead
man to the truth.

This way of thinking connotes the idea and reality of acts that are intrinsically evil. These
actions, when done with intent and knowledge, are never justifiable. Despite having good effects,
these acts will never be out of the spectrum of what is evil. The ends will never justify the
means. The reason is that these acts are very destructive to the human person. Examples used
were contraception and abortion. These acts, despite having good intentions will never be out of
the realm of evil but can only diminish it. These actions, despite the possibility of having some
reasonable basis will not be justified because it attacks the very humanity of a person. It devalues
life and dignity. Thus, despite having different facticity or issues, cultures, traditions, it will
never justify such acts. This invokes justice and preventing inconsistencies that persons may
make. This stance prevents people justifying these acts based on issues monetarily or financially
and happiness. These acts are not justifiable but not restrictive. Because this label that pertains to
such acts as evil prevents persons from committing it. It prevents them to commit acts that will
harm other people’s dignity and their own. Thus, people should take such laws as an enabling
tool as a guide that will prevent one’s harmful choice from actualizing.
