ELE 403 Practicum Teaching I_ Reflection on Teaching Evaluation Criteria

Teacher Name: Servet CEYLAN & Melike Ünal GEZER Date: 23.12.19

Write a very brief reflection on your first official teaching considering your lesson plan process and your
teaching setting (classroom size, students, topic you teach etc.). Critically reflect on your teaching by finding
answers to the following questions:
-Short description of your teaching (teaching setting, topic you taught, class size and grade etc.)
-What was good and bad about the experience? What did you feel went well or not in your teaching? How do
you know it went well?
-What sense could you make of the situation overall? What else could you have done?

In my final teaching, I taught 11th grade “Used to” and the class size is 20 also their proficiency level is A2. I
tried to teach the students that “Used to” was used to describe the actions or habits that we have often done in
the past, but that we no longer do or do less. First of all, I showed my own childhood photos, and then I wrote
some sentences that I did in the past but I don't do now. Then I showed the photos of three children and asked
the students to guess who these babies could be. After taking their guesses, I told them that they were actually
the three main characters of the Harry Potter movie and showed them photos of their current state. I then asked
the students if they liked the Harry Potter movie and asked which character is their favorite one. Then I handed
out worksheets to the students about what Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint had done in the
past, but not now, and gave the students a table where they could write information about them. And as they
read those paragraphs, I asked them to fill the table carefully so that they could answer the Kahoot questions
according to the table easily. After giving the students enough time, they did read the paragraphs and filled out
the tables. Then I collected readings because I asked the students to answer the questions in Kahoot with their
own notes. This made it easier for me to understand whether they read or not. After they read the paragraphs, I
opened a short video from Harry Potter's first film, The Philosopher's Stone, and then I divided the students into
groups. Also, I asked each group to enter only one person's code and write the group names. The students
answered the questions, and I think the class in general was very good. Most of the students answered the
questions correctly, but at the end of the game I gave the students in the winning group a bookmark with Harry
Potter and thanked all the students for their participation. After completing this activity, I made students play
"Find Someone Who". First, I told all the students that they should go around and ask appropriate questions to
their friends to answer the boxes given in the table. Then I told them they could only write one person's name
once. The students really liked this activity too, and as I observed them, I saw that they all did the activity by
1
following the instructions I gave and speaking English. Even one of my intern friends, Utku, told me after my
teaching that one of the students went to him to fill the table and asked questions and spoke without any
grammar and pronunciation mistakes, and that made me really happy. Finally, I asked the students to write a
paragraph about themselves by using “used to.”
I think I managed to get the students 'attention because I think it made them very happy to use my own photo
in my lecture, to associate this subject with the Harry Potter movie, to watch a video, to play Kahoot, to give a
gift, and to play "Find Someone Who" and their participation in the class was very high. Also, I knew it was
going well during the lesson was that the students did not seem bored and everyone seemed to be focused on
the lesson. Apart from that, I think that classroom management is good because I make sure that students do not
get distracted and participate in class. Even, during “Find Someone Who” game, some students were still asking
each other questions when I said that our time was over and I would like to listen to your answers. Then, I
called them "11 A, do you hear me?" and they all listened to me, and even some students liked to call 11-A.
Especially in my classes I take care not to use sentences like "Don’t talk, shut up, be quiet"
I really think my class was fun and productive in general. The feedback I received from my friends, interns,
and students really make me happy and motivated. Even after this last lecture, Servet Hoca, the students in both
classes told him that they liked my teaching style and they had fun. Of course there are points I need to
improve, such as a mistake in pronunciation, but I hope I will be even better with more practice.

 Shows personalization, I aimed to teach "used to" according to the interests and levels of
resourcefulness and originality the students by using my own photographs, using paragraphs
about the actors in the movie Harry Potter, preparing the Kahoot
game and preparing the Find Someone Who questions, and I
prepared them all myself. According to the feedback I received,
both of my teachers liked it very much and even one of my
teachers told me that I could only teach this subject so much fun
and effective.

Purpose: 5 4 3 2 1
 Rationale for each activity was As I mentioned above, I write goals for each activity and
well-developed (purpose) assignment. For instance, I wrote the rationale for warm up
activity; the aim of this activity is to continue the case in the
introduction part and to attract students’ attention because these
age groups love Harry Potter or she also shows videos for
students who may or may not have watched. In addition, I
addressed the purpose of the main activity in my lesson; the
purpose of the main activity is to make the subject more practical
by the students and to provide them with more information about
the actors of the movie they love. Other than that, Kahoot will
attract more attention of the students and I think organizing a
small race will motivate the students more by giving gifts to the
winning group. Also, I addressed in paragraphs in the main
activity that even though actors in the film had some bad habits in
the past, they have now overcome them and come to very good
places in their profession. If there were such children among the
students, I wanted to give them some hope indirectly.

from easy to difficult. First of all, I gave some examples of myself
and then I gave information about the actors in the film, and the
students could see the example sentences so that they could better
understand the "used to" structure. Then I prepared Kahoot
questions about these texts. And in the follow up activity, the
students asked their friends the appropriate questions for each
sentence in the table or answered the questions. Finally, I asked
them to write something about themselves in the assignment part. In
short, they acquired information about myself, then about the
famous three actors, then about their friends, and wrote sentences
about themselves in the assignment part.
2. The objectives of the lesson are Excellent Good Satisfactory Poor Unsatisfactory
clear to the students. 5 4 3 2 1
The objectives of the lesson were clear to students because I wrote
that the students will be able to describe some situations verbally
and in writing by using “used to” & discuss the past action that they
used to do with their friends & give examples about themselves both
verbally and in writing. When I look at the objectives I have
identified and the performance of the students in the class, I think
that I realized all my objectives.

time. For example, one of the reasons I divided students into groups
in Kahoot was to enable students to communicate effectively with

their friends and learn group work. Apart from that, the students in
the follow-up activity were in contact with their friends by asking
questions and they had acquired information about their friends that
they didn't know, and as far as I could observe, it was both fun and
warm atmosphere in the classroom.

However, I had some pronunciation mistakes. For example, I
mispronounced the word "chewing gum," but I'm going to fix it next
week.

give class instructions. 5 4 3 2 1
I think I have given the instructions short, clear and understandable,
because after each instruction I have confirmed whether they
understand. Actually in general they understood what they should
do. For example, before starting the follow-up activity, I asked the
students whether they knew Find Someone Who or not and they said
they didn't know it. So, I raised a student sitting in the front row to
the board to make them understand better and made a small
animation and then the students understood better. And I especially
care about my written instructions because some students may not
understand. For example, I wrote in Find Someone Who worksheet
that “Move around and ask someone one question only. You don’t
have to ask them in order. If they answer “yes”, write their name in
the box and ask them about it. If “no”, say thank you and move on.
Aim to complete as many boxes as you can. After you finished, we
will answer these as a class.” I think this is so clear and
understandable.

originality while teaching. I think I showed resourcefulness, personalization, flexibility and
originality while teaching. While teaching the "Used to" structure, I
linked it to the actors of Harry Potter. Or in the follow-up activity,
they asked their friends questions in a fun way and also while they
were doing it, they feel flexible because there is no true answer to
fill in the blanks in the table. Actually, they really like the lesson in
general and in short, the pictures, paragraphs, questions in the
Kahoot, the table of Find Someone Who I used in my class belonged
to me.

word “netball” while the students read the paragraphs on the main
activity. Then, I wrote this word directly on the board and I asked
whether they knew the meaning of this word or not and explained
the meaning of the word. Other than that, since they had never heard
of Find Someone Who in the follow up activity, I noticed that they
did not understand it when I first explained it. So I picked up a
student sitting in the first row and we did a little animation with her.
So the students understood better and started doing the activity.

embarrassing them. For example, in the Main activity, as the
students filled the table, I went over and looked at the sentences they
wrote and talked to them. Other than that, in the follow up activity,
when the students spoke English among themselves, I told them the
correct version if there was any grammatical or pronunciation error I
heard.

students into groups and one person in each group entered the code
for the Kahoot game on their phone and answered the questions as a
group. I think the students liked very much the pictures, questions
and music that I prepared in the Kahoot. I think if the students had
answered these questions on the worksheet after reading the
paragraphs about the actors in the film, they would not have had
much fun. I also opened a short video from the Harry Potter movie
to get the students' attention and showed them photos of actors in the
film and my own photos by using PPT.

That's how I thought I would use my time for this lesson; total class
time (1 class hours / 40 minutes), introduction ( 5 minutes), warm-
up activity (10 minutes), main activity (15 minutes) and follow-up
activity (10 minutes). Also I wrote that the duration of each activity
may vary depending on the situation. And I think I use the time very
effectively because I finished all my activities and explained the
assignment, and then the bell rang immediately.
