COEB432 Project Proposal

Company

Our company will be Dong Dong Productions (name tentative), a small studio focused on the
development of indie games. The background of the company may talk about our vision, mission
and values, as well as the list of executives (we can assign fake roles to each of us). Since indie game
studios rarely have more than ten members, it will look proper. We can have, Director, Graphic
Designer, Sound Engineer and Programmer(s), as an example.

Outline

Instead of making ten articles, five for societal, five for legal, we will instead make five points, but
these five articles will have a common link between societal and legal concerns. For those concerns,
elaborate on how they will affect us positively or negatively, as well as how we plan to address these
sorts of issues (or not). To further explain this, the examples are as follows:

1) The Formation Of Dong Dong Productions (name tentative)

A small indie studio formed to make fun games rich with local culture and spirit.
(Talk about how the company was formed due to there not being a proper games
development studio in Malaysia despite there being many talented individuals here)

Societal: The rising popularity of gaming culture (or digital culture) in Malaysia or globally
and its increasing accessibility (or any kind of article to that effect)

Legal: Taxes. How working as a studio means we as a company must pay company taxes.
(Find a legal document (preferably Malaysian) about taxation and come up with a rough
(fake) estimate of how much we make per game by deducting taxes and manpower and
how it affects our activities)

2) The Legend Of Hang Tuah

A sprite-based action brawler based on the story of the hero of the Malaysian legend.
(Talk about how the reason we made this is to enrich the world in Malaysian folklore)

Societal : The perception of folklore and myths in Malaysian society (or any article to
such an effect)

Legal : The concept of free domain properties (Find a legal document (preferably
Malaysian) that speaks of the rights of creators to use any historical legend, and thus
how it makes a legal dispute avoidable)
3) Boboiboy Adventure
A smartphone game adaptation of the locally made Malay cartoon.
(Boboiboy is an example, just use any property that couldn’t possibly belong to us eg
Upin and Ipin, Polis Evo, Hantu Kak Limah)

Societal : The rise of artistic-based occupations such as 3D animation and film in Malaysia
(depending on the property you want to use)

Legal : Copyrights. We may talk about how it is a collaboration with the original creators,
and that a cut of the profits are given back to them as royalties (Find any legal document
about these rights (preferably Malaysian))

4) Steam as a Distributor
The platform Dong Dong Productions (name tentative) will be commonly using.
(Talk about Steam as a platform and so on and so forth)

Societal : How Steam has affected the computer gaming industry since its formation and
how having a platform to help with distribution will help indie developers such as
ourselves start their businesses

Legal : The newly introduce digital taxation laws and how it may (or may not) affect our
businesses following its implementation (Since this is fairly new, a newspaper article or
anything that covers how this digital tax works will be fine)

5) No Idea, Please Come Up With One More For Me Thank You
