CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Alcohol is one of the most widely used drug substances in the world. Mostly people drink a small
or moderate amount of alcohol to make them relax and enhance their social activities. Using
alcohol in this way is not harmful for most adult. However, people, whose use of alcohol has
negative effects on any aspects of their lives, including health, relationship, work, study are
considered to have an alcohol problem. This problem can range from mild to severe. The severity
of an alcohol problem defends on the factors including the type of alcohol you drink, how much
you drink and how long you have been drinking (Draves, 2008).
The use and abuse of alcohol continues to be widespread among the students. The constant increase
of the students who consume alcohol has made a large impact on society. That’s why researchers
are understanding the factors why students use alcohol. Some of them are using and abusing
alcohol to have an experiment or to experience the thrill of it (Donna Coffman, Ph.D., of Penn
State, 2008)

Research shows that many students start to drink at very young ages and drinking patterns
established during adolescence are likely to continue through adulthood. The influence of the
environment and other social factors are some causes why students are getting involved in
consumption of alcohol. The negative consequences of students who use alcohol include decreased
academic achievements, depression and other substance use (Oppong Asante, Meyer-Weitz, &
Petersen, 2014). Some studies found that heavy drinking of students in high school harmfully
affects high school and college completion (Cook and Moore, 1993 and Yamada et al., 1996).
Studies show that alcohol consumption is a common behavior in society among adolescents.
However, this behavior has negative traits that can inhibit an individual’s growth and maturation
Regular alcohol consumption leads to alcoholism which causes loads of mental and physical
problems. Also, the students who got involved in this kind of stuff could possibly affect their
academics such as not attending in their classes, lack of efforts in performances and having failing
A study conducted by the researchers on students in high school came up with a number of reasons
for alcohol use. High on the list was curiosity about the substance effect. Some students who have
ever taken alcohol said that they got involved because alcohol helps them escape reality and forget
their problems. Other factors such as lifestyle, stressful situations with anxiety, lack of confidence,
peer pressure and other problems related with their education were considered as causes of alcohol
consumption among students (O’Malley, Johnston, & Bachman, 1998). In general, students who
consume large amount of alcohol have greater risk behaviors for themselves compared to the
students who do not consume (Hingson RW, Heeren T, Winter MR, 2006).

ADMINISTRATORS- this can also help the school administrators to solve or prevent the
TEACHERS- the teachers will be guided on what to do with the students who consume alcohol.
The teachers would be able to know why students are using alcohol and help them.
STUDENTS- the students can get benefits in the research because it is a way for them to be aware
regarding the said study. Students may have a knowledge of their acts and make a better way for
those.
RESEARCHERS- the researchers would be able to gain new knowledge and information about
the study.
FUTURE RESEARCHERS- this study will be a useful reference for the researchers who would
The study entitled, “Alcohol Consumption Among Senior High School Students: To Experiment
or to Experience?” will be conducted in Zambales National High School at Iba, Zambales. It covers
10 Senior High School students as participants. The study is limited to determine the alcohol
consumption of Senior High School students whether it is for experiment or for experience.
Alcohol consumption among the students continues to be a problem in the society. The number
of students who consume alcohol still increases regardless of how it can negatively affect them.
The purpose of this study is to determine the consumption of alcohol of Senior High School
