1. SCOPE

This general specification applies to the surface preparation and paintings for Flash
Smelting Furnace steel structures.

Stainless steel, copper, brass and aluminium surfaces are not to be painted except where
otherwise specified.

Structures to be embedded in concrete are to be derusted and painted with shop primer and
only the visible ends of anchor bolts, washers and nuts are to be painted after the erection
and the locking of the bolts.

The completed corrosion protection system shall be carried out, if possible, in the work
shop. Only the welding, bolted joint and touch-up repair paintings are allowed at the site.

2. SURFACE PREPARATION

2.1. Cleaning

Before blasting surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned from any layers of other types as dirt,
dust, concrete, slag, oil, grease etc. Removal of layers can be done by washing with
suitable solving agents as stated in standard ISO 12944-4.

2.2. Mechanical treatment

Before applying the first protective coat the surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned from rust
and rolling skin.

Mechanical removal of rust and skin layers shall be done according to standard ISO 12944-
4 and ISO 8504-2.

After mechanical derusting and before applying the first coat, the surfaces must be carefully
cleaned from rust, dust and blasting agent residues by means of brushes or heavy type
vacuum cleaner or have to be blown off by means of oil free and dry compressed air.

The first protective coat must be applied at latest four hours after derusting.

Any acid or cleaning solution washing after blasting is not allowed.

Flame brush derusting or rust passivating with chemical agents are not allowed.

All external and internal mild steel surfaces shall be properly treated to endure the hot and
corrosive industrial climate on site

3. PAINT SYSTEMS

Coating materials and corrosion protective systems are according standard ISO 12944-5.

3.1. Paint system 1

Corrosion protection system for steel structures in mechanical abrasion and strong corrosive
conditions in operating temperature up to 120 C.

Corrosion protection work in the workshop:

- Blast derusting grade shall be Sa 2 ½.

- The first coating is a two-pack zinc rich epoxy paint or a two-pack zinc rich ethyl silicate
paint. Minimum dry film thickness shall be 40 m.

- The second and third coating is two component epoxy paint or alternatively two compo-
nent polyurethane paint. Minimum dry film thickness of two layers shall be 120 m.

- Total dry film thickness of system 1 is minimum 160 m.

- e.g. ISO 12944-5/A4.13.

Final surface color code is RAL 7038 or according to customer’s specification.

3.2. Paint system 2

Corrosion protection system for steel structures in operating temperature up to 400 C.

Corrosion protection work in the workshop:

- Blast derusting grade shall be Sa 2 ½ .

- The first coating is a two-pack zinc rich ethyl silicate paint. Minimum dry film thickness
shall be 70 m

- The second coating is silicone aluminium paint. Minimum dry film thickness shall be
15 m.

- Total dry film thickness of system 2 is minimum 85 m.

- e.g. ISO 12944-5 (ESI Zn(R) SI 85/2 – FeSa 2 ½)

Final surface color “Aluminium” or according to customer’s specification.

3.3. Corrosion protection work on site

Repair of the transporting and erection damages shall be performed according to these
painting systems.

3.4. Surface treatment for stainless steel parts

All defects and contaminations of the stainless steel parts surfaces, such as welding oxide,
heat tint or scale shall be cleaned with stainless steel brush or acid pickled and passivated.

5. STORAGE AND MIXING

5.1. Storage

Only coating materials specified in this specification are allowed to be processed.

Purchased materials should be stocked in sufficient quantities to insure continuity of

operations.

The coating materials shall be stored air-tightly closed in a dry, well ventilated room, free
from excessive heat or direct sun radiation according to the specification and instructions of
the coating material manufacturer. Open air storage is not allowed.

5.2. Mixing

All painting material which have celled or show pigment separation and cannot be mixed to
a smooth homogeneous solution shall be considered unfit for use.

The painting materials are basically to be stirred up with mechanical stirring agitator in such
a way that all sediments will be distributed and mixed in and that the mass appears to be
uniform.

6. WORKMANSHIP AND INSPECTION

Workmanship and inspection of the corrosion protection shall be according to standard ISO
12944-7 and according to the instructions of the paint manufacturer.

Application of the corrosion protective paint shall be performed according to the instructions
of paint suppliers using brush or airless spray.

The working conditions must fulfill the requirements in the painting instructions of the
supplier.

The painting work must be stopped if one of the condition parameters is out of the
instructions.

The temperature difference between surface temperature and dew point must be at the
minimum +3ºC so that the painting can be performed.

All the corrosion protection process shall be reported.

After drying the surface thickness of the painting shall be measured using a liable method.

For daily measuring of the final surface, the non-destructive methods are preferred such as
magnetic method of ISO 2178.
