SWOT ANALYSIS OF SZABIST


Strengths
1. Center for Management and Development

• The SZABIST Center for Management and Development (SZABIST – CMD)


initiated its Research and Consultancy activities in December 1997 under the
umbrella of Research and Consultancy Wing of SZABIST (RCWS). The main
focus of CMD has been conducting state of the art scientific and socio-economic
development research to strengthen the corporate and development sector of
Pakistan. SZABIST – CMD provides research and consultancy services to the
multinational and international agencies, including government and non–
governmental organizations, within and outside the country.

2. Globally recognized institute having four Campuses

• SZABIST is globally recognized institute having four Campuses in Karachi,


Islamabad, Larkana and Dubai. SZABIST is identified as a major university
comprising of four campuses (including one foreign campus) three diploma
centers, three intermediate colleges and one research center. SZABIST is one of
the top 20 business schools from Asia recognized by BusinessWeek. Only two
business schools from Pakistan are listed in BusinessWeek.

3. Research oriented institutes with a highly reputed PhD program

• SZABIST Karachi and Islamabad are strongly research oriented institutes with a
highly reputed PhD program, currently having an enrollment of over 200
postgraduate students. SZABIST larkana offers undergraduate & graduate
programs in Management Sciences.

• Asia Inc, a leading Asian Magazine, has ranked SZABIST among the top MBA
Schools of South Asia. Best MBA Schools Survey for two consecutive years
(2003, 2004). SZABIST is one of the top 15 business schools from South Asia
ranked in Asia Inc. SZABIST is also ranked among the best Science and
Technology and MBA schools in Asia by the CNN-Time publication Asia week.
SZABIST is also listed in the CNN Executive Education Schools.

4. Agreements with the foreign Universities

• SZABIST has signed Articulation Agreements with the University of Wales, UK


and the University of Northampton, UK. SZABIST has also signed MoUs with the
State University of New York, USA; University of London, UK; University of
Luton, UK; Philippines Women University, Philippines; and the Asian Academy of
Film & Television, India.

5. Security System

• SZABIST has a security system at all its campuses and having wide area for
Parking. Close Circuit (CC) cameras are placed aw well.

6. Well Equipped Computer Labs

• It has Computer Labs in all campuses equipped with latest Work Stations. All
Students have their sign in IDs. The important Feature of the Lab is that it has
free scanning facility and Printing facility at affordable charges. The ZAB DESK is
the features that differentiate SZABIST form its competitors, in which a student
has his own academic record and access related to all academic matters. All
theupdates are sent to Students via ZABDESK.

7. Skilled and professional Faculty

Its Faculty mostly is Ph.ds and Professional, mostly visiting faculty is from
Corporate Sector, So the students get relations with corporate people that give
benefit them in their career.

8. Internal and External Scholarships

• SZABIST Provides Scholarships to needy students at 100%. Other scholarships


include HEC, USAID, Shell and Japanese Scholarships.

9. Out Reach

• SZABIST’s Out Reach as compare to its major Competitors IBA and LUMS is bit
high. In SZABIST most of the students belongs to interior. More it has four
campuses and other supporting institute under SZABIST brand that builds it
image in interior and other areas.

10. Autonomous Student Body (SSC)

• The students have their own Governing body for awareness and extracurricular
activities. Which let them feel the independency and sense of achievement.

• Youth Senate is also available for Students of SZABIST and they promote it in
Pakistan Youth Senate.

11. Expansion Strategies (focusing on different modern field and courses to


offer.

• SZABIST has the expansion strategies, that they consistently growing their
market and Products over the time.

Weaknesses
1. No suitable Building in Karachi.

• SZABIST Karachi campus, which also head office has not a proper building, it
is based on three bungalows named 90, 100 and 108 (Administration Block)
means it has not one building, which symbolize it, but Larkana and Islamband
have its own beautiful Buildings.

2. No Hostel and Transport Facility

• No Hostel and Transport Facility is available in SZABIST, so due to


unavailability of hostel, many interior students facing problems.

3. Parking Problems at Karachi Campus

• Most of the time, the traffic problems are observed. It’s because It is located
in street and most of the students have own vehicles.

4. Un able to implement Same quality standards in overall campuses

• It is big weakness of szabist that quality standards vary at all four campuses,
and facilities are also different. Course portfolios are also different.

5. No Proper Facility for Extracurricular Activities

• Sports and other entertainment activities are arranged not in the premises of
the campus because it is in residential areas, so very difficult to arrange near
by campus.

6. Less Classes which creates trouble in Timing Slot

• There are fewer classes in Karachi as compare to total courses offered that’s
the reason campus arranges classes in four slots and remains open from
8:00 am to 10:00 pm.

Opportunities
1. Total Market Share Will Grow

• Number of Foreign companies is growing, so it will create the attractiveness


for business schools and number of students will increase. So SZABIST has
Opportunity to get some share from this increasing share.

2. Strategic Alliances

• As we Discused Above that SZABIST has signed so many MoU with


international and Global Universities, which will create opportunity for them to
attract more students. This activity will increase the demand of SZABIST in
the market. Strategic alliance will increase the quality of education and at the
same time it will help the institution specialize. Basically in such strategic
alliance, SZABIST will give their students a chance to join any different
courses outside their country.

3. Emerging eBussiness will increase the number of students.

• It is reported that eBussines is growing day by day, almost all financial


institute offers eBussiness Applications and they require highly professional
people. So it will be opportunity for SZABIST to produce and attract student in
IT fields and E-commerce. They may start specialization E-commerce or E-
Bussiness.

4. Website Marketing

• In This Information Technology world website is used as e-commerce tools to


attract foreign and national Students. So if the SZabist focus on such
marketing strategy, it may avail lot of enrollment from foreign and National
areas.

• Moreover, websites are used to create competitive edge, it is also opportunity


to facilitate existing students with latest facilities, provide them convenient.

5. New Education Policy

• Last Year New Education Policy was planned, in which Not only basic
Education was focused to increase but they also decided that Higher
education will also be increased from 4% to 15 % by 2015. So it is opportunity
to have share from this growing market share. So it expected that in 2015
market of Higher Education will grow approximately 350%. So Government
will offer lot of scholarships, so potential in this field will grow. So SZABIST
can adopt Product development and Market Development Strategies.

• Pakistan has signed MoU with different countries for education corporation,
which include the exchange of students as well, so it will create more positive
impact for enrollment because it is globally recognized University.

7. Shahed Benazir Bhutto Youth Development Program

• It is big opportunity for SZABIST that it offers in Karachi and Larkana


Campuses the course for SBBYDP, which not only is source of revenue but
also create lot of enrollment and awareness about the SZABIST Brand.

8. E- Courses or Online education

• SZABST can offer online course and diploma course to potential candidates

Threats
1. Competitors can become a threat

• IBA Karachi as competitor has its own Transportation and a well Organized
Campus in Karachi. It Offers lot of scholarships and talent hunt programs that
SZABIST lacks.

• The Global Business School Network (GBSN) is aiming to start Business


school in Karachi with the name of “Karachi business School”, The Karachi
Business School will offer programs in executive education in 2010 with the
MBA and Executive MBA degree programs starting in 2011.

2. Security Issues

• After the bomb blast in Islamic Urdu University at Lahore, there were rumors that
Now Taliban Will Hit the SZABIST, So such rumors and attacks on Universities
will threat the schools like SZABIST.

3. HEC’s new Policies

• HEC’s new Policy about MBA degree is different for each bachelor program
category, So it let them to offer different portfolios. Same case was with PhD
degree that it revised by HEC, and all institutes has to follow them.

4. Political Image

• Some people think that SZABIST is political institute, due to affiliation with Bhutto
Family. So it has created a negative perception in General Public.

5. Lack of knowledge about higher Education

• Still Majority of Pakistani Nation is unaware about the Higher


Education, that’s the reason only 4% of the population have Higher
Education.

6. Technological Advancement.

• SZABIST can not Respond the immediate changes occurring in the technology
because its not only costlt but also requires training and development programs.
