Q.4a) Prove that for an ideal transformer an e.m.f. induced per tum in the primary winding is
equal to the e.m.f. induced per tum in the secondary winding. 8
QAb) The primary current ofa transformer takes lA at a power factor of 004 when connected
across a 200V, 50hz supply and the secondary is open circuited . The number of turns on the
primary is twice that on secondary. A load .. taking 50A at a lagging p.f. 0.8 is now
connected across secondary. Draw the phasor diagram of the transformer for this condition,
neglecting voltage drops in the transformer. What is the value of the primary current? 8
Q.5a) Derive the expression for stored energy in magnetically coupled circuit. 8
Q5b) Explain the principle of operation of a transformer for secondary on no-load and on
load. Draw the phasor diagrams . 8

Answer any three questions
Two marks are reserved for neat and well organized answer script

1. a) A balanced, 3-phase, star connected load of 13kW takes a lagging current of 18A with a line voltage of
440V at 50Hz. Find the parameters of the load per phase. If the same impedances are connected in
delta , by what percentage the line voltage needs to be changed to keep the line current unchanged? 10

b) Explain how total power in a balanced three phase system can be measured with the help of two
wattmeters. 6

2. a) Three impedances ZA = 20L20on, ZB = 25L-30on and Zc = 22L-45°n are connected in star across a
balanced three pha se, four wire supply of 440V, 50Hz with phase sequence of ABC. Calculate the
neutral current if the line imped anc es are 0.5L60on each. Neglect neutral conductor impedance. 8

b) Explain how active power can be measured by one wattmeter inthe caseof a three pnase 6alance'C
system. Draw necessary diagrams. 8

3. a) How an unbalanced system of three phase vectors can be resolved into three balanced systems of
vectors? Highlight the properties of each of the resolved vectors with suitable diagrams. 10

b) Evaluate f At and f A2 from an unbalanced three phase system with the help of 'a ' operator. The symbols
have usual mean ings. 6

4. a) What is an odd periodic function ? Explain with a typical plot. Show that in the case of an odd periodic
function , the Fourier expansion contains only the sine terms. 8

b) Explain how harmonics are introduced due to non linear circuit elements in a system. 8

5. In a three phase system, a phase voltage contains 3rd, 5111 and 7 rh harmonics. (i) Derive the expressions
and draw the phasor diagrams of phase voltages for each of the harmonic. (ii) Comment on the phase
sequence of these phase voltages. (iii) Draw the phasor diagrams of the corresponding line voltages for
each of these harmonics. 16
