ACTIVITY 8

Walk this way

This is a way to help children choose verbs that make the most
impact.

A game for three or more players.

Resources
● Whiteboard or large piece of paper and pen.
● A copy of Walk this way cards on page 26.

Preparation
● Photocopy page 26 and cut into cards. Place the cards in a pile on
the table.

Before beginning the activity

● Say, Before we can begin to play Walk this way, we need to write down
some verbs that we use to show how people walk. We can walk slowly. Stand
up and walk slowly.
● Ask the children to think of a verb that means to walk slowly.
● Write the words in a list under the heading walking slowly.

23
● Repeat the same process with verbs to walk quickly, softly and angrily.
Walk this way

You may need to use a thesaurus to introduce the children to a

wider vocabulary.
● The children may think of the following:

walk slowly walk quickly walk softly walk angrily

plod scamper tip-toe stomp
shuffle hurry creep stamp
trudge dart sneak clump
slog dash sidle march
traipse scurry patter

Activity
● Ask the first child to take the top card off the pile and then look at
the words in the list under the same heading. Ask him to choose a
word and keep it in his head.
● Ask the child to then walk around in the manner of the word he
has chosen.
● Ask the other children: How is (name) walking? Look at the words in
the list we have made under the heading (of how he is walking). Which
word do you think best describes how (name) is walking?
● Once the children have found the verb the player is thinking of,
cross it off the list.
● Repeat, giving each child a turn, or until all the cards have been
used.

Extension
● Ask the children for verbs that mean said.
● Make sure you get a range that covers the different moods people
may be in when they speak: quickly, softly, angrily, loudly.
● Write each word on a card (see table below for ideas).
● Write a list of verbs as before.

24
● Decide on a sentence for the children to say as they perform the

Walk this way

action.
