The simplest way to characterize the total impact of the human population on the
environment is to multiply the average impact of an individual by the total number of
individuals or
T=PxI
where P is the population size, I is the average environmental impact per person.
The impact per person varies widely, within the same nation and also among nations.
The average impact of a person who lives in the United States is much greater than the
impact of a person who lives in a low-technology society. But even in a poor, low-
technology nation like Bangladesh, the sheer number of people leads to largescale
environmental effects.
Modern technology has increased the use of natural resources and as result, has
increased the impact, as compared to the hunters and farmers of old civilizations.
For example, before the invention of CFCs, which is used as coolant and in spray cans,
we were not depleting the ozone layer.
Similarly, before automobiles, there was less demand for steel, oil and other natural
resources. So, there was less air pollution.
The dilemma of our generation is that improving the standard of living while slowing
overall human population growth.
To improve the living standards, we need to utilize more resources and for reducing the
environmental impact we need to limit our resource usage. Improving the standard of
living increases the total environmental impact and countering the environmental
benefits of a decline in population growth.
