Resumo
Abstract
The objective of this review has been to present the main concepts
associated to the natural disasters and to emphasize the importance of
hydrological science in the prevention and mitigation of the natural
disasters caused by the dynamics of the movement of the water on, in
and under the surface of the Earth. A brief bibliographical revision was
accomplished on natural disasters. The official incidence of natural
disasters was evidenced quantitatively, by type, genesis and distribution.
In Brazil the natural disasters have above all a hydro-meteorological
origin. Finally the importance of Hydrology is analyzed in the prevention
and mitigation of natural disasters.
Key words: natural disasters; Hydrology; environmental impacts.
