Japanese, and Korean Movies and Television shows. the goal of this study is to

determine the preferences on the kind of television shows and movies of teenagers, to

narrow down the possible factors that affect their preferences on television shows and

movies and to identify whether the preferences on television shows and movies came

from the Philippines or to foreign countries such as Korea and Japan. The study was

conducted by doing an online survey which are responded by Mapuan Students. The

study limits only to Korean, Japanese and Filipino television shows and movies.

Keywords: Anime, Indie Films, Kdrama, Korean Wave, Xenocentrism, Television

I. INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The Philippine film and television shows have a lot of culture varieties, including

Korean and Japanese, which dominates the ranking of watch time of the Filipinos and

even have additions of the hits of Korean dramas and Japanesé anime in Morning and

Evening television series, possibly topping out the Filipino Television Shows. The

Korean and Japanese movies have also landed in the movie industry in the Philippines,

the movie hits Train to Busan, and Kimi no Nawa dominating the cinema industry. In this

case, there is a possibility of xenocentrism. Kimi no Nawa is now hailed as the highest

grossing anime film which was screened last 2016 and earned a total of $290 million

which surpassed Spirited Away. (Inquirer, 2017)

Nature and Scope of the Problem

The Japanese and Korean movies and television shows have been dominating

the film and television industry lately, and in which it may be possible that this hinders

the Filipino movies and television shows to be discovered, because the spotlight is

given to the Japanese and Korean movies and television shows, this may be seen in

the numbers of the Korean television shows. The research limits its respondents to the

teenage Mapuan students due to the limited time of the researchers. The movies and

television shows’ nationality is limited to Japanese, Korean, and Filipino, due to the

dominance of the two (Japanese and Korean) and Filipino is the nationality of the

research.

Research Objectives:

1. To determine the preferences on the kind of television shows and movies of

teenagers

2. To narrow down the possible factors that affect their preferences on television

shows and movies.

3. To identify whether the preferences on television shows and movies came from

the Philippines or to foreign countries such as Korea and Japan

Review of Related Literature

Japanese Influence. Japan is a country known for its advanced technology and

high cultural influence. In fact, it is Rank 6 out of 80 countries in 2018. (L.P., 2019). One

of the countries that is influenced by the Japanese is the Philippines. Where according

to (Pinili, 2017), many Filipino teenagers are strongly influenced by Japanese Culture

because of watching anime series on television. They much prefer imitating or

cosplaying the characters they often watch and dubbing the language they hear in the

shows.

Korean Influence. According to Cabello, Palisoc, Panganiban, Santosidad,

Sarreal (2018), Filipino teenagers, fan or not a fan of dramas, have set standards of

drama preferences and qualities which Korean dramas embody. This is one of the

reasons why most teens preferred foreign media because Filipino TV dramas cannot

meet the standards of these demanded qualities. It was also found in other research

that most people have interests in the Korean culture due to the repetitive habit of

watching Korean dramas and with that, they are driven to learn the Korean language

and have a goal to study in Korea, and all respondents in the study agreed that an

educational value can be obtained from watching a Korean Drama (Hamdan and Ismail,

2019).

Philippine Influence. According to Cruz, Laguna, and Mejia-Raymundo (2001) ,

Filipino comedy shows, news, and romantic drama are appreciated by the youth. Talk

shows with political issues, educational, documentaries and other unappealing trends
are less watched by teenagers. A research about Indie Films having a big positive

impact to Filipino students found that the response to cognitive thinking would put their

minds into focus on learning thus catching their interest to grasp new information

(Salde, Vidal, Palarca and Crescencio, 2018).

II. METHODS AND MATERIALS

The research approach used in this research is a Quantitative Research.

According to Bryman (2015), Quantitative research methods describe and measure the

level of occurrences based on numbers and calculations. (Bryman, 2015). The

researchers used Quantitative approach because this study aims to create data where it

shows the preferences of Teenage Mapuan students on Movies and Television of the

selected countries.

The research design used in the research is Descriptive, where it is stated that

scientific method which involves observing and describing the behavior of a subject

without influencing it in any way. (Shuttleworth, 2008).

The sampling technique used in this research is Simple Random, where the

researchers are free to choose their respondents but limited to the students of mapua.

This is also used due to the fact that the researchers lack of time to find a target group

of target, and this method is convenient to the researchers. The researchers also limits

its respondents to 50.

The material used in the research is a 15-item survey questionnaire, where the

questionnaire is divided into three (3) parts, demographic profile, preferences on

movies, and preferences of tv shows. The researchers used google forms in order to

conduct an online survey. The researchers validated the questionnaire using pilot

testing of five respondents. The researchers found no problems on the survey

questionnaire.

For the research method, figure 2.1 shows the logical procedure in the research:

The statistical treatment used to analyze the data was weighted mean and
frequency distribution.

IV. DISCUSSION

As shown in part B of Chapter III, the research shows a major finding. The

Japenese and Korean movies and television shows have been dominating the industry

in the Philippines.

H1:The Japanese and Korean movies and television shows have been

dominating the industry in the Philippines.

As shown in Figure 3.3 Ranking of preferences among asian movies, Filipino

movies are the least priority of the respondents, choosing either Japan or Korean

movies. Although the respondents chose Philippine Movies as their second choice,

Japan and korean movies are still ranked high. In align to Figure 3.3, Figure 3.6 shows
the number who is learning or learned the language that they prefer. The pie chart

shows a significantly high percentage, which is 74% of the respondents, learning the

language. Figure 3.7 also supports this claim, where it is shown that 58% of the

respondents tend to like the other countries because of the movie. Surprisingly, Figure

3.9 shows that the respondents tend to like anime movie, where 62% of the

respondents rated 5 and 16% rated 4. While 24% and 32% of the respondents rated 5

and 4, respectively, on Filipino Movies.

Television is also a form of media that can be taken from the Philippines, Japan,

and Korea. Although the most watched in local television is the news, 19 of the

respondents does not include any of this shows. Which is a contrary of the next figure,

3.13, which is shown that Anime is the most watched in the streaming sites, being

K-Drama as the second. Unfortunately, Filipino TV shows in streaming sites exhibit low

data, where there are only 2 respondents who watched it on streaming sites. Following

up on figure 3.12, Figure 3.14 shows that there are 74% of the respondents who seldom

watches local TV, which explains why there are 19 respondents did not include any

local tv shows. In contrast, 48% and 38% on figure 3.15 displayed always and

sometimes watched in streaming sites.

V. CONCLUSION

As the data gathered and analyzed by the researchers, they determine that the

teenagers prefer other cultures movies specially in television shows. The factor that

mostly affects their preference is how entertaining the movie or television was, also the

genre of the show and movie adds to the factors that affect the preference of the
teenagers. As long as the movie or show is entertaining, the viewers will subscribe and

wait till the next episode or movie to be released. It can be said that the foreign

countries such as Korea and Japan were very good at entertaining their viewers, from

the quality of the video, scenes and animation upto the storyline of the movie. The

teenagers in Mapua University prefer movies and television shows from foreign

countries. Having this said, they conclude and go with the Alternative Hypothesis which

states that the Japanese and Korean movies and television shows have been

dominating the industry in the Philippines specially to today’s generation. This can be

seen in different cinema sales in the Philippines, most of the movie sales were from

other countries. Because the teenager prefer movies from different countries. The

respondents of this research is set to 50, and for only one (1) school. Future studies

should examine much greater number of respondents from multiple colleges.
