Lieutenant Harry Brubaker is one of the best fliers in the carrier group but he is a
reluctant warrior. A veteran naval aviator of World War II, he has a promising legal
career in Denver plus a wife and two young daughters that he loves dearly. But for
this war the government has decided to selectively call up reserves. While the rest of
America goes about their business without giving the war in Korea a second thought,
Harry has to leave family and career to fight it.

Have a mission and that is to destroy the bridges at Toko-Ri in North Korea thereby
slowing the flow of men and material to the communist forces in the south. But the
bridges are located in a narrow valley between steep mountains and the air route in
and out of the valley is heavily fortified.

For Brubaker it is the struggle between duty and the family and career he has been
pulled away from. For Tarrant it is the memories of a lost family and the loneliness
This is a tense, action packed book loaded with both physical and emotional drama.

William Holden's aircraft is hit while returning from the bombing mission. He ditches
the plan in enemy territory. Mickey Rooney arrives in a chopper to pick him up but the
chopper is badly damaged in firing. In the end both die while fighting the enemy.

Harry Brubaker is the classic American hero. A WWII veteran, called back to fly jets
in Korea, in a war he doesn't understand, missing home and his family, loyal to his
country, wants nothing more to go home.

This is a brief but epic look at those sent to fight the wars: their motivations, their
fears, and their sacrifices. The novel is set among Navy pilots during the Korean War,
but the characters would easily fit into the present.

9. Lastly, what have you learned from the novel.

The writing was good and they are Trained as professionals, they prepare for the
rituals of war that countless men before them have endured, and face the same fears.
They are American fighter pilots. Together they face an enemy they do not
understand, knowing their only hope for survival is to win.
