INTRODUCTION

Greywater, also spelled gray water, is considered wastewater by

most people. Greywater is the used water from showers, baths,
hand washing, laundry, and dishes. It does not include sewage
water, like water from toilets, which is called blackwater.

Greywater is non potable, which means it is unsafe to drink. It can

contain many harmful things, like chemicals from soap, shampoo
and dish liquids, to food particles, bacteria, and whatever dirt or
germs you wash from your hands and body.

However, it’s beginning to be treated and used as fresh water

around the world in places dealing with growing populations but
shrinking amounts of fresh water. In most households, the water
that fills our toilets is unnecessarily potable (drinkable) water, and
many communities are considering recycling greywater to flush
toilets.
OBJECTIVE

Grey water contains detergents and other particles like bits,

dirt etc. The objective of the project is to know “If grey
water affects plant growth under identical conditions of
sunlight, type of soil, location etc.”
MATERIALS REQUIRED

 Grey water collected from different sources.

 Fresh water.

 Ruler.

 Pots for planting.

 Seeds of different plants.

 Potting soil.

 Camera.
METHODOLOGY

1. We collected greywater from different sources. This could be

water you washed your hands in, water from washing dishes,
bathtub water, or any other greywater source .

2. We planted the seeds. Put 1-2 seeds in each pot with

potting soil.

3. We water each plant with the same type of water each day.
Be sure to water each plant with the same amount of water .

4. We measure the height of the plants once they begin to

sprout and record the number of days and height.
OBSERVATIONS
For marigold plant(Tagetes)
After one week

Grey water(5cm)

Normal water(7cm)
After two weeks

Grey water(11cm)

Normal water(19cm)
For onion plant(Allium cepa)
After one week

Grey water(2cm)

Normal water(4cm)
After two weeks

Grey water(7cm)

Normal water(13cm)
RESULTS

All the seeds germinated satisfactorily. The data

collected showed that the use of grey water has
shorten the height of both the marigold and
onion plant and the plants irrigated with normal
water grew more in height.
Conclusions

All the plants did not grow at same rate. I can

conclude that the grey water can harm the
growth of the plants. So grey water is better
avoided in watering plants.
