This phenomenological study aims to understand the plight of the grade 1 to 3

teachers in teaching mother-tongue. The main concept of this study is to unveil and

record the real situations of the grade teachers from selected elementary schools in

Tagum City.

We believe that teachers take active part in the community. They are not just

iv
an individual who yearn to teach learners but to develop the learners to become

productive citizen someday and they took multiple responsibilities on how the

learners learned from them.

Mother-tongue is the basic language we learned from home as well as to the

community and it becomes our tool in communication. Through this, the Department

of Education (DepEd) comes with an idea to integrate mother-tongue inside the

classroom. Then, it was realized with an order no. 16 series of February 17, 2012

starting 2012-2013.

But, the implementation of mother-tongue across nation brings an issue

towards teachers who’s supposed to be the implementer of mother-tongue inside the

classroom. This issue comes up as our research with the following guide questions:

1.) What are the difficulties of Grade 1 to 3 teachers in teaching mother-tongue as

a medium of instruction?

2.) What are the experiences of Grade 1 to 3 teachers in teaching mother-tongue

as a medium of instruction?

3.) How mother-tongue changed the teaching strategy of Grade 1 to 3 teachers

toward their pupils?

The results of our research were identified in different factors which made the

mother-tongue came as plight towards teachers. During the implementation of

mother-tongue, teachers were doing adjustment and because there were unfamiliar

words that they never heard before they took it as their major problem. Work load is

one of their issues. There was time that they extend their efforts to fulfill the needs of

the learners and to finished the paper works as well. They also noticed that the

v
implementation of mother-tongue was time-consuming specifically in making daily

lesson log and interpreting unfamiliar words to the students. As they compare the old

curriculum from mother-tongue as part of the new curriculum, they said that the old

curriculum was preferable rather than the new curriculum.

In this setting, the implementation of mother-tongue should have another

review in order to know if mother-tongue has really big contribution in terms of

developing educational system. The Department of Education (DepEd) should also

consider the situation of the teachers.
