Explain how local plumbing codes effect plumbing design

Plumbing is quite essential component of buildings. Every locality or region has its
own plumbing codes and they are based on the various criteria that are essential for
plumbing. Consumptions of water by people of any region vary with many factors not
limited to sociological, economical, environmental and climatic conditions. Region
having high temperature will have more consumptions of water than people leaving in
the cold region. So, the plumbing design will differ for such regions. Similarly supply
of water, be it continuous supply or intermittent, will significantly affect the consumer
behavior. So is the case with the economic condition of people. For example, in
region where the people have low income, they have single storied or two storied
houses. Water pump (centrifugal pump, mostly) of 0.5 Hp (Horsepower) is sufficient
for the water pumping while this very same pump will be inefficient in the 4 storied or
5 storied buildings which widely portray the medium income-based class of people.
Similarly based on the types of toilets the diameter and types of traps are selected.
Local plumbing codes are based on the convenience and experience of the people.
Though overall concept and ultimate goal of plumbing is same for any of the regions,
selections of paraphernalia, appurtenances and their properties vary depending upon
the localities. Plumbing requirement of hot regions will vary with the plumbing
requirements in the cold regions. Still many rural areas use the septic tank and has its
own design requirement based on the topographical features.
