A. Overall judgement of Prof. Graham’s behaviour in the class, and then predict how
Janet and other students might experience it?
Ans: Prof. Graham was trying to give an understanding of the concepts through case analysis
instead of normal lecture to comprehend the concepts. Though he has spent 70 minutes into the
class but discussion went nowhere so he reluctantly decided to give the answer just like any
other instructor but at the end moment of session when he found that Janet had cracked the
case, he didn’t show up his emotions to make sure that rest 79 people understand the case. This
shows that he was concerned about the entire class’ learning process, rather than just answering
the case to reach to the conclusion. He went on to ask steps of solution sequentially from Janet
for coming down to conclusion of her case analysis. This showed professor wanted the steps
to be understood or at least to ponder upon the thought process of cracking the case. After
getting through the case he wanted students to figure out themselves hence inculcating the habit
of thinking out of the box in students.
All the students including Ms Janet were not very comfortable
in case methodology, still they had given their best efforts to solve the case. As a general
tendency, the students may have expected that by the end of the class Prof. Graham would give
them the correct answer. Ms Janet was also very hesitant in providing the solution she has
worked out. Though, initially she was nervous, uncomfortable but on realising that her answers
were in the right direction, she regained confidence to further answer the questions raised by
Prof. Graham. All the students in the class are otherwise comfortable with the overall behaviour
of Prof. Graham. This could be understood clearly by the way another student prompted Ms
Janet to speak louder.
B. How does this situation appear to Prof. Graham?

Ans: In initial phase of discussion, Prof. Graham was a bit disappointed on non-receipt of the
solution to case analysis. He expected that students will come out with desired answer and he
can give his insight into it. As he was about to conclude the discussion that was not leading
anywhere near to the solution, Ms Jennet came up with a correct answer. This gave him the
satisfaction. He could leave the class assured that the discussion among the student will
invariably lead to the desired results.

C. How well did Prof. Graham handle the questioning and response with Janet?
Ans: He knew that the answer of Ms Jennet was correct, but he didn’t wanted to reveal it in the
very first instance. He further continued it by cross questioning with relevant questions in order
to show other students that finding the solution was not very hard and it was also not time
consuming. He handled the questioning maturely with an intention that the students would
learn the solution slowly through the questions answered by Ms Jennet and later by discussing
among them. He made them realise the way to tackle case analysis problems. In the process he
made whole class comfortable with his method of teaching.

D. At the end of the interchange, Prof. Graham says, “Well, well! What do you think of
this response? What will be the effects of this response? How else might he have
responded?

Ans: This is a very ambiguous word by Prof. Graham. Its open ended and thought provoking
in the particular context. It pushes the student to introspect the scenarios and strive for
perfection in their answers. Even being ambiguous it serves the purpose. The statement neither
undermine the effort of Janet nor lead to negative environment in class. The students may have
understood that everything has to be completed within a time frame and they will try to
complete their future assignments/tasks in time bound manner through interchanging ideas.
Prof. Graham might have responded in appreciating way like
“Well Done”, which would have made Janet happier, but this would also reduce the gravity of
situation formed during the discussion of case among the students hence not leading to the
habit of thinking out of the box among students. One more way of response could be “Work
Hard”, which would undermine the effort of Janet and lead to negative environment in class.

E. Should Prof. Graham have dropped by the group around Janet’s desk?

Ans: No, because he could see his method of teaching the subject through cases was coming
into actual practice. Students coming together to discuss the solution with Ms Janet was enough
for him to understand that they are eager and anxious regarding the solution, so he should not
disturb the students at this time, as learning had already begun. He wanted the students to figure
out the solution themselves.
