IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON YOUNG

GENERATION

HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

They say humans are social animals, which means our lives depend on other
humans. The way we socialize has changed over the last two decades and has
brought a revolution. The old-school socializing has turned into the growth of
social media. Like every invention, it came with its pros and cons and we decided
to conduct a research on it and find out what our youth thinks about it’s affects on
them.

Technology started to change very rapidly in the 20th Century. After the first
computers were invented, scientists and engineers began to develop ways to
connect those computers through networks, and this later led to the birth of the
Internet.

By the mid and end of 2000s, Facebook and Instagram became available to users
throughout the world. These sites remain some of the most popular social networks
on the Internet.

These social media sites have created an environment where users can reach the
maximum number of people without sacrificing the intimacy of person-to-person
communication. We can only imagine about what the future of social networking
may look in the next decade, however, it seems clear that it will exist in some form
for as long as humans are alive.

Social media has brought a lot of advantages for the society. From progressed
nations to under-developed countries, every nation is utilizing the power of social
media to enhance life and use it for the betterment of the people.

However, on the other hand, social media has also affected the society in the
negative way. Just like anything which can be used for both good and bad, social
media have also provided the pros and cons ways for the people. It is all about the
usage and getting things done positively by using the power of social media. It is in
the hands of the user to benefit from it. But willingly, or unwillingly it can still
have negative impacts on the users. Today in this research, we are going to assess
both, the advantages and disadvantages of the social media for the society by the
youth itself.
QUESTIONNAIRE
Our questionnaire consists of 14 well designed multiple choice questions and an
open-ended question that collects the required information, fits the targeted
audience or sample in our population, exploring the range of possible outcomes
and yet easy and quick to understand and complete.

The questionnaire gathers some basic information from the sample in the first three
questions, moving on to negative and positive impacts and ending with the degree
of agreement and disagreement along with a solution to the problem as conclusion.

TARGETED AUDIENCE

Our population is the young generation of universities and colleges that is itself
mainly affected by social media. Asking the youth is a great way to gather
unbiased and first hand information while minimizing the thought intake of older
generation that did not get affected to such an extent.

We took a sample of 30 university and college students, male and female from
different institutes and departments ranging from high-end world recognized
education centres to public colleges and from the age of 18 to 24 year old students.

Q15. How do you think the negative impacts of social media can be decreased or eliminated?
Cyber crime having a strict watch on social media websites.

By using it less
By creating a department like PAMRA which control the night extent in online interaction with other online
audience
Give only limited time to the social media applications it will decrease the chance of negative mental
health
The new generation use for negative things for social media
The negative imapct will not be decreased

By overcome the use of social media.

By it’s less use
Direct discussion is the best
By eliminating social media from your life
By requesting those sites which spread those kinda stuff
Education regarding social media usage in schools and colleges
Social media mostly fool us about others life, it only shows us the best of others and we start envying
them for having the best life anyone could have which makes us feel the to be in an unhealthy
competition 24/7 with everyone, we need to educate the youth about this. Everyone has good and bad
times in life. We just can’t see the bad sides on social media and we tend to believe that the bad only
comes to us. We need to remind them to stay true to themselves and not to just live to please their social
media audience.
Decreased
By using it less frequently.
No there is no negative impact of social media
By obsessing less over one's social image and not taking it seriously.
By disciplining ourselves and to not use it more than a certain amount of time so that it won't affect your
day to day life.
The negative impacts of social media can be decreased it cant eliminated because like you heard advise
in childhood from parents that in society were you live there are many bad people's and many good
people's. YOU HAVE TO SURVIVE. Thankyou Adeel J
People should learn not to put everything on media or there should be restrictions o each app.
By controlling the usage
Idk
Start with limiting the use of the gadgets such as smartphones, laptops, tablets, the internet, etc. Set strict
rules for yourself like checking social media only twice a day or not checking phone.

By improving privacy....and by providing better networks

blackmailing
Stay as lowkey as possible. Less the publicity lesser the resentment.
now we mostly run our businesses on social media websites rather than official sites.

There needs to be mass level awareness program along with personal level that educates people on how
much it should be used and to what extent it should be taken seriously.
There must be paid usage consumership to the media users
By requesting those sites which spread those kinda stuff

INTERPRETATION

The results indicate that 99% of our youth is frequently using social media or is
addicted. Most of the users on social media use it to keep up with the trends in
world. Youth itself agrees that most of them have had a negative impact on their
life in terms of studies, work, family relations and physical/mental health. People
agree that social media has been affecting their consumer socializing in real life.
CONCLUSION & RECOMMENDATION

The impact of social media has been positive as well as negative. It has made
world a global village, a close knit community, connecting the whole word
together. However, with advantages, it has created several problems including
mental/physical health, study and work. It has also increased cyber crimes along
with social behavior as a whole. On governmental level, departments like
cybercrime cells and PEMRA needs to be more active and closely observe the
changing behavior of the youth of Pakistan. Youth itself should limit the use of
social media to a moderate level and schools need to educate students on how to
avoid the negativity arising from social media.
