The definition of education is the act or process of imparting or acquiring general
knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgement, and generally of
preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life. Education plays an important
role in our lives. It is the root reason as to why we go to school and study every day.

It is a stepping stone towards achieving our goals. Education in the earliest time was
very practical. They were taught and learned through oral and mostly hands-on; Females
were taught housekeeping, weaving, and other forms of agriculture. The males learned
hunting, carpentry and other skills based on their location.

Parents and tribal leaders are the ones who taught the children, in their time there was no
occupational position such as a teacher. Positive reinforcements were valued over
corporal punishing of the students when wrong. During the pre-colonial period they did
not make use of teaching materials such as blackboards, and books were scarce.

When the Spaniards colonized the Philippines they did it through religion and education.
They had their own way of teaching, their education was structured and heavily religion
based. Baybayin, an ancient writing system used by our ancestors was removed and
native were forced to learn a foreign language such as Spanish. Filipinos were not
allowed to use their own native language.

Only the rich and privileged men were allowed to attend school. The females were tasked
to stay at home and commit themselves to housework. It is during the Spanish colonial
period that the Filipinos suffered the most.

Their very own Filipino blood was being suppressed and they did not have any freedom
to simply be, be who they are - Filipinos. Education during this time was very limited; it
was difficult to achieve education if you were a middle-class Filipino with no title to your
name. Likewise jobs given to Filipinos were that of fishermen, farmers, drivers but never
anything that gave them control over how things were run.

All these injustices were captured accurately through the literary books of Doctor Jose
Rizal. In his books he encapsulates the greed of the Spanish officials and how the priests
abused their power, how education was in their time. Particularly, the education in the
convent - the malice committed.

In 1989 the Filipinos were freed from the Spaniards. Then the Americans came and left
the most in terms of educational changes. In their time of occupation a public system of
education was applied. Wherein the goal was: to spread cultural values, the English
language and the American history. Through this the Filipinos formed a national identity
and eventually Filipino nationalism.

At age seven-years-old it became a requirement to register into school. School materials

were given for free. Religion no longer became a major part of the education. Schools
were built even in remote areas and their first teachers were American soldiers, then the
proper teachers.
These adaptions carried through to our present education system. Unlike the past,
Filipinos have become empowered. You can see the footprints of Filipinos all over the
world leaving an impact. There are now licensed teachers who forever impart their
knowledge on generations after generations.

The changing of times mean the changing of roles in a once constricted society, what
used to be patriarchy is now what we know as equality. Everyone has a choice to be
educated and chase after whatever it is that they dream of, now you are in charge of your
own outcome.

Filipinos excel in studies of different fields. It just comes to show when you don’t try to
control something it blooms into something great.Aside from the freedom we have
earned, technology comes into play.

With the help of technology everything is simplified, from means of transport to the way
we are taught and how we learn. In the past, access the schools was difficult because of
the distance you had to travel in order to attend. Now we have cars, jeeps, motorcycles
and other vehicles to get us from one place to another.

In school, teachers no longer need to write tirelessly nor should they refer to books often.
They make use of laptops, power points and the internet as a source for their teaching.
The students have an easier way of accomplishing workloads with the help of the internet
and printers. Students can now make floor plans easily and precisely with the help of
software applications, it no longer takes a full day to create so little. In that way this
generation is able to create so much more. There are several ways for you to make
something happen with just a few clicks.

Technology also opens up a lot of new subjects vital to this era of information. Subjects
such as: AutoCAD, Android, Web development and CISCO. This era is open to more
subjects, more jobs, more job opportunities and more dreams each individual can pursue.

The most beautiful difference is that anyone and everyone can obtain education. Rich or
poor there are several ways you can get into school. Public school system is still a part of
education. Far or near it does not matter, things like cars and online schooling exists.
There is a choice for everyone.

Alongside all these changes there comes a set of problems. The development of
technology is not all positive; students are now more attached to their cellular phones
than ever before, it has become a distraction and a habit. Excuses like, “I’m on my phone
for research purposes (but not)” instead of getting the most out of learning while on the
internet, people spend it browsing through social media.

People touch their phones an average 2,617 times per day tap, swipe. How much time we
spend on our devices show the role they play in our lives. Iphone users unlock their
phone 80 times a day, android users do so 110 times, seven times every 20 minutes these
results were done through research by Discout.

Phones became an extension to ones self, this is called Extended Self theory by Doctor
Russell Belk. Separation causes problems like anxiety, irritability and other symptoms
similar to substance addiction.

With the rise of the internet and in our era of information the fine line between factual
and fallacy has been drawn thinly. In a 2016 Quora post, according to marketing profs,
more than 2 million articles are published on the web every day. You already know that
the number must have increased since then because of how the internet is available
everywhere. Among those published, only a very small amount is correct and factual.

Plagiarizing became easier as well and it has become difficult to pin down the source of
the information you are collecting. Even though no idea is a completely an original idea ,
plagiarism completely duplicates a certain content down to every detail. It can be very
disheartening to have your name removed and re-written several times.

Time management is the key to handling this addiction a lot of us have. Time
management is; knowing what it is we consider valuable and worth our time so that we
prioritize it above all else. When we teach the youth that they will learn to spend their
time wisely and consciously rather than browsing endlessly.
Even though information is presented we must always read more into things and cite
different sources that are credible, before coming to a final answer to any question. Better
yet ask from a professional teacher for questions that relate to your education. Do the
right thing and credit from whoever you get content from or when you share.

Technology has brought education a long way, it comes with its set of problems but so
does anything that brings about change. The Philippines is a developing country, it
always has. One day we will be a developed one, Filipinos can overcome all problems
that will arise because with every problem there is a solution.
