Raw Water
All water, especially surface waters, contain both dissolved and suspended par cles. Coagula on and
floccula on processes are used to separate the suspended solids from the water. Conven onal coagula on-
floccula on-sedimenta on prac ces are common pre-treatments for many water purifica on systems-
especially filtra on treatments. These processes agglomerate suspended solids together into larger
aggrega ons to enable physical filtra on processes to more easily remove them. Par culate removal by these

Lautan Luas has an extensive range of coagulant products including:

A. Poly-Aluminium Chloride (PAC) are aluminum-based coagulants. They are

effec ve coagulant to remove microscopic suspended ma er quickly over a
wide range of turbidity, temperature and pH as encountered in natural surface
waters. It is also effec ve for removing algae. They similar to alum, with several
important differences:

 Par ally pre-neutralised (higher basicity than alum)

 Contain Cl instead of SO4

 Contain up to 3 mes the aluminum content.

Commonly used inorganic coagulants include aluminium
sulphate ("alum"), polyaluminium chloride, ferric sulphate and
B. Aluminium Chlorohydrate (ACH) is a high basicity, highly polymerized
ferric chloride. Selec on of the appropriate compound is a coagulant that has li le effect on alkalinity and pH and is ideal for trea ng low
func on of cost, raw water quality and the selected treatment alkalinity or high turbidity source waters. Due to its higher Al2O3 content (min
process. For so , coloured, waters, either aluminium or iron 23%), ACH can generally be dosed at lower feed rates reducing sludge
coagulants may be used at their respec ve op mal pH ranges:

coloured upland waters (aluminium based coagulant) and 4.0
to 5.0 (iron based). Iron coagulants have an advantage rela ve C. Aluminium Sulfate is an effec ve primary coagulant based on trivalent
to aluminium in this applica on, as they operate at a much aluminium. It works by neutralising the nega ve charge on suspended and
lower coagula on pH to maximise the removal of dissolved colloidal ma er to produce compact flocs suitable for easy removal by either
organic ma er and consequently reduce the poten al for

values would not be appropriate for aluminium coagulants
unless accompanied by a separate acid dosing process. D. Organic Coagulants are highly ca onic charge products use to destabilize
nega vely-charged colloidal par cles and enhance the rapid floc forma on.
Coagula on effec veness is highly dependent on the dose
levels of the coagulants employed, the pH, and colloid
concentra ons. Coagula on pH is the stable pH value that is
achieved a er the coagulant and alkali or acid have been
dosed to the raw water. Coagula on with ferric salts is most
effec ve in a pH range between 5 and 8. For aluminum salts,
the op mal range is 5 to 7; at pH values above 7, the efficiency
of aluminum-based coagulants falls significantly. To increase
coagulant effec veness, the pH level of feed water should be
brought into the target pH range before the coagulant is
added. To adjust pH levels Ca(OH)2 or Soda Ash is applied.
Lautan Luas has an extensive range of Flocculant products including:

1. Anionic, powder-grade polymers: these are available in low, medium and

high molecular weights.

2. Ca onic, powder-grade polymers: these are available in wide range of

molecular weights & charge.

3. Non-ionic, powder-grade polymers. For specific applica on

Following coagula on, a gentle mixing stage termed

floccula on increases the par cle size from submicroscopic
micro-flocs to visible suspended par cles. The polymers bridge
the microfloc formed by coagula on, agglomera ng smaller
par cles into larger ones increasing the se ling rate. Once the
floc has reached its op mum size and strength, the water is
ready for the separa on process.

For chemical disinfec on of water the following product can be used:

1. Chlorine (Cl2)

2. Chlorine dioxide (ClO2)

3. Sodium/Calcium Hypo-chlorite (OCl-)

4. SDIC 60%

5. TCCA 90%

6. H2O2

Lautan Luas engineer will do the plant survey and give recommenda on for the
suitable disinfectant chemicals needed.
Water disinfec on means the removal, deac va on or killing
of pathogenic microorganisms. Microorganisms are destroyed
or deac vated termina ng their growth and reproduc on.
When microorganisms are not removed from drinking water,
consump on of the water will cause people to fall ill or system
to fail down.
Media Filter
The most common filter media in water treatment are silica sand and
anthracite. In comparison to single media sand filters, a dual filter media with
anthracite over sand permits more penetra on of the suspended ma er into
the filter bed, thus resul ng in more efficient filtra on and longer runs
between cleaning.

Iron and manganese are commonly found in raw water and ground water
sources. If the concentra on of these naturally occurring contaminants exceeds
suggested maximum contaminant levels then the water, your laundry, and
plumbing fixtures may be discolored or leaving stain behind. This, leading to
consumer complaints and a general dissa sfac on with the water u lity. There
are standards set for iron and manganese, but these are not health related and
are not enforceable. Clean water should have less than 0.3 milligrams per liter
(mg/l) and 0.05 mg/l for iron and manganese, respec vely. Small water plants
may choose to either sequestrate or remove iron and manganese.
Sequestra on only works for combined iron and manganese concentra ons up
to 1.0 mg/L and only in cases where the treatment is not permanent. Removal
is usually achieved through ion exchange or oxida on filtra on.

Ac vated carbon filters are generally employed in the process of removing

Media Filtra on is the process employed to remove suspended
organic compounds and/or extrac ng free chlorine from water, thereby making
solids by passing of water through a porous medium. Filtra on is
the water suitable for discharge into the environment or for further use in
commonly the final polishing step in conven onal water
manufacturing processes. Elimina ng organics in portable water, such as humic
treatment processes, which is designed to ensure that the final
and fulvic acid, prevents chlorine in the water from chemically reac ng with
treated water meets the target turbidity limits. The quality of the
the acids and forming trihalomethanes, a class of known carcinogens. Ac vated
filtra on process depends on the size, surface charge, and
Carbon (AC) filtra on, as with any water treatment method, is not capable of
geometry of both suspended solids and the filter media, as well
removing every possible type of contaminant. For example, sodium, microbes,
as on the water analysis and opera onal parameters. fluoride, nitrates and water so ening also cannot be achieved with AC filters. In
addi on, heavy metals, such as lead, can only be removed with a very specific
kind of ac vated carbon water treatment.

Lautan Luas provides ,

1. High quality and high hardness of silica sand

2. High quality and uniform of anthracite

3. Speciific cataly c filter media designed for the removal of iron and
manganese. This media, which acts as an oxida on catalyst, efficiently
removes dissolved iron to as low as 0.001 ppm and manganese to 0.001
ppm. The media has been used extensively in a wide variety of applica ons
for over 10 years in Indonesia

4. High Quality and wide variance of Ac vated Carbon base from coconut
shells, coal (anthracite or bituminous) and wood.
Process Water
Industrial raw water treatment is a core ac vity of many industrial processes, such as hea ng, cooling,
processing, cleaning and rinsing. Poor water treatment procedures can have serious implica ons to the process
and the quality of its final results. Surfaces of pipes and vessels may be affected by corrosion, and steam boilers
can build up scale or corrode - both of which will diminish the effec veness and efficiency of the process.

Our extensive product lines includes highly effec ve scale & corrosion inhibitors, biocides, dispersants, an -
scalant, cleaning, de-scaling products and others which when combined with our exper se, will maintain your
assets' efficiency and performance.

Ion Exchange
Some examples of the use of both so and demineralized water are:

1. Boiler Feed Water

2. Pharmaceu cal applica ons

3. Electronics industry

4. Food applica ons

5. Industrial applica ons

Ion exchange resins are polymers that are capable of Lautan Luas provides ,
exchanging par cular ions within the polymer with ions in a
solu on that is passed through them. Synthe c resins are 1. High quality of ca onic and anionic ion exchange resin for so ener,
used primarily for purifying water, but are also employed for demineralized, mixed bed and polishing applica on
various other applica ons, including separa on of some
2. Specific ion exchange resin for chela ng process and heavy metal removal

In water purifica on the aim is usually either to so en the

water or to remove the mineral content altogether. Water is
so ened by using a resin containing Na+ ca ons which bind
Ca2+ and Mg2+ more strongly than Na+. As the water passes
through the resin, the resin takes up Ca2+ and Mg2+ and
releases Na+ making for a 'so er' water. If the water needs to
have the mineral content en rely removed, it is passed
through a resin containing H+ (which replaces all the ca ons)
and then through a second resin containing OH- (which
replaces all the anions). The H+ and OH- then react together
to produce more water. This process produces demineralised
Reverse Osmosis Chemicals
The use of high quality RO chemicals are essen al for a reverse osmosis plant
program. There will be a significant advantages in frequency of cleaning
membranes due to fouling, as irreversible damage can occur with excessively
fouled membranes. For example, a pressure build up at the membrane inlet
may indicate suspended solids, such as iron or colloidal par cles in the feed
water; in this case there may be an apparent increase in the Silt Density Index
(SDI). An increase in pressure at the brine discharge usually indicates some
mineral scaling, and the brine analysis can be examined for clues as to its
possible nature.

Lautan Luas provides ,

1. High quality of chlorine scavenger to ensure no residual remains to avoid

membrane deteriora on.

2. High Quality of an scalant to prevent minerals fouling .

3. High quality of membrane cleaning chemicals / agents as effec ve cleaning

Reverse osmosis is a membrane filtra on process that is used requires some knowledge of the type of foulant in order to select the most
extensively for the desalina on and purifica on of water. effec ve cleaning op on from among those available.

When to clean a membrane? 4. RO biocides, can be used either on-line or as part of a cleaning program to
control biofouling in reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. When used as an
Cleaning of reverse osmosis membranes should take place when on-line treatment, these non-oxidizing biocides should be dosed prior to
one or more of the main (normalised) opera ng parameters: the RO system to control bio-growth in the membranes. The applica on
flux, conduc vity or pressure differen al, changes by 10 - 15%. frequency of any selected biocide will normally depend on the level of
biological loading and biofilm growth rate.
It is important to clean the membrane at an early stage of
fouling. If performance deteriorates by 30-40% (or more), it may
be impossible to recover plant performance by rou ne cleaning
procedures. In a badly fouled membrane the flow pa ern of the
cleaning solu on fails to penetrate the fouling medium.
Boiler Treatment Chemicals
Incoming raw water contains hardness, sillica, alkalinity and oxygen, all of
which can be detrimental to boiler opera ons. These components need to be
dealt with effec vely in order to protect heat exchange equipment linings from
scale and corrosion. Lack of care in addressing low quality incoming water can
increase energy costs and can lead to poor quality steam, reduced efficiency,
shorter plant life and an unreliable opera on.

Lautan Luas offers a complete line of

1. Oxygen scavengers treatment program

2. Internal treatment program include corrosion inhibitors, polymeric

petrochemicals, paper mills, oil processing facili es and many Our experienced technical engineers and support will give assistance to our
clients to achieve efficient and trouble free processing.

Cooling Water Treatment

Cooling water systems without an effec ve cooling water treatment program
will suffer from scale forma on, corrosion and fouling, and may become a
breeding ground for harmful bacteria. All of these condi ons reduce efficiency,
shorten plant equipment life, and make your opera on unreliable and unsafe.
Poor control can not only put your cooling process at risk, but also wastes
energy and chemicals, and increases the cost of water.

To overcome these problems Lautan Luas has developed a comprehensive

range of cooling water treatment products that essen ally fall into 3 areas of

1. Corrosion protec on. From Phosphate, organic phosphate and non

phosphate treatment program.
Open recircula ng cooling systems repeatedly use the same
water over and over for cooling. While this significantly
2 Scale forma on and fouling control. We offer wide variety of an scalant and
reduces water consump on over once-through cooling
systems, recirculated cooling water requires unique 3. Control harmful microbial growth, like Legionella bacteria. We offer broad
treatments to prevent scale and corrosion, and mi gate spectrum of oxidizing & non-oxidizing biocide and bio-dispersant chemicals.
microbial issues due to increases in temperature, residence
me and dissolved solids. Lautan Luas also provides all the essen al equipment related to cooling needs
such as dosing pumps, conduc vity/pH controllers and others related.
Closed Cooling Water Chemicals
The main treatment program is focused on corrosion inhibi on. However,
closed loops can also suffer from deposi on of corrosion products, which are
10 mes the size of the metal of origin.

Microbiological contamina on may also occur, because even closed systems

breathe through pump seals, expansion tanks and system make-up. These
systems should be closely monitored for tell tail signs of bacterial
contamina on.

Lautan Luas provide complete lines of,

1. Corrosion inhibitor series designed to form a magne te protec ve layer on

the mild steel system piping, protec ng it from corrosion and yellow metal
corrosion inhibitors to protect valves, fi ngs and monitoring equipment
found in closed loops.

Closed recircula ng systems are used for both hea ng and

cooling in a number of industrial and commercial applica ons.
Because these systems are considered "closed" to the outside
air, there is very li le make-up water required. Typically less than
10% make-up per year is considered a ght system.

The goal of closed system water treatment programs is to keep

heat transfer equipment as clean as possible in order to
maximize water flow and heat transfer efficiency, and to protect
the equipment and associated piping from corrosion deposi on
and microbiological contamina on.
Waste Water Treatment
Wastewater treatment is the process employed to clean effluents from industrial, commercial or residen al
applica ons so that the water may either be returned to the environment with acceptably minimal impact or
reused in its ini al process. Treatment is performed in 3 or more dis nct stages, depending on the composi on
and level of the waste load bourne by the incoming wastewater.

Preliminary Treatment
The objec ve of the preliminary treatment process is removal of coarse solids and
materials o en found in raw wastewater effluents. Removal of these materials is
necessary to enhance the efficacy of opera on and minimize maintenance of
process equipment employed in the subsequent stages of treatment. Preliminary
treatment opera ons typically include coarse screening, grit removal and in some
cases, combina on of large waste materials.

Primary Treatment
The objec ves of the primary treatment process are removal of se le-able organic
and inorganic solids by sedimenta on, and the removal floa ng scum by skimming.
Approximately 25 to 50% of the incoming biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), 50 to
70% of total suspended solids (SS), and 65% of the oil and grease are removed during
primary treatment. Some organic nitrogen, organic phosphorus, and heavy metals
associated with solids are also removed during primary sedimenta on, but residual
colloidal and dissolved cons tuents are not affected.

Lautan luas provide,

1. Wide variant of coagulant from Al base to Fe base for coagula on purposes

2. Wide variant of anionic and ca onic flocculant to enhance the flocs forma on
Secondary Treatment
The objec ve of secondary treatment upon receiving the effluent from the
primary treatment process is to remove any residual organics and suspended
solids. This stage involves the removal of biodegradable dissolved and colloidal
organic ma er using aerobic biological treatment processes. Aerobic biological
treatment occurs in the presence of oxygen by aerobic bacteria that metabolize
the organic ma er in the wastewater, thereby producing more microorganisms
and inorganic end-products (principally CO2, NH3, and H2O).

Lautan Luas provide,

1. Specific bacteria to enhance the COD, color, Fat-Oil and Grease removal

2. Specific bacteria for specific sludge reduc on

Tertiary Treatment
Ter ary treatment is an addi onal treatment a er secondary. It can remove
more than 99 percent of all the impuri es from sewage, producing the highest
quality effluent water. The technology employed in this process can be very
expensive, and require a high level of technical know-how and well trained
treatment plant operators.

Lautan Luas provide,

1. Ac vated carbon for heavy metal and dangerous substance removal

2. Special coagulants for nutrient removal

The bio-solids generated by sewage treatment processes need to be dewatered
in order to reduce its volume and save on disposal costs. As needed by the
condi ons of the process, the sludge may be wasted then further treated via
mechanical dewatering units such as belt filter presses, filter presses and

Lautan Luas provide,

 Wide range of high molecular weight ca onic polymer that will ensure the
lowest possible cake moisture content.
Waste Water Treatment Management Services

The goal of wastewater treatment management is to achieve improvements across the

whole process cycle. It involves mechanical, biological, chemical, and human elements,
all of which must fall within in the correct range of values for the treatment system to be
effec ve and reliable.
Waste disposal costs are rising year on year. The more contaminated your effluent, the
greater your effluent handling cost increase.

Recognizing this condi on, there are three main focus areas in which cost saving may be
exploited :
A. Reduce the cost/m³ of your effluent water
B. Reduce the sludge volume leaving your site
C. Recycle treated effluent water

Lautan Luas team will do an extensive assessment, which is undertaken in four or more
stages to op mize your processes.

At the first stage, conduct a thorough evalua on of the process parameters and the
external elements that affect the process such as,
 The wastewater-genera ng process
 Equipment/system design and actual capacity
 Chemicals used in the process
 Opera ng and maintenance procedures
 Flows and loadings of all per nent inputs
 Peak loads and poten al upset condi ons
 Variability, both normal and unusual events
 Desired water or effluent quality

At the second stage, we will review and evaluate the process controls,
instrumenta on, and monitoring processes to determine whether you are,
 Monitoring the right parameters at the right loca on
 Using the right test to measure parameters
 Collec ng and evalua ng lab data effec vely
 Logging data for future historical evalua ons
 Making the correct adjustments based on good data

At the fourth stage, we will assess your chemical usage by confirming:

 Proper chemicals are used and proper dosage are implemented based on tests (ex.
jar tests
 Chemicals are mixed and prepared correctly (e.g., flocculant polymers)

At the final stage, we will assess your operator knowledge to confirm that your staff
understands the process required for op mal system opera on.
