Introduction

Indonesia education faced a challenge. The challenge is produce superior competiencies human
resources. Human resources that are able to compete in global era. It is correspond with the 21st
century education development paradigm. Learning outcomes directed with :

- Critical thinking and problem solving skills, creativity and innovation, collabo-ration and
communication.

- Skilled at using media, information, technology, and communication.

Accordingly, indonesia have a science learning in the curriculum named" 2013 curriculum". Designed
so students can fulfill the skills and abilities needed in the 21st century. In 21st century skills,
technology has a primary role. Students 'skills in using technology are very important. Scientific
critical thinking skills are very important to make the learning successful. According to Dwyer et al.
Students who have higher critical thinking skills will get higher learning outcomes. Different with
students who have lower critical thinking skills. Because critical thinking is a combination of abilities,
knowledge, values, attitudes, skills, procceses. Scientific critical thinking is reasonable. Trough some
process : observation, analyzing, synthesizing, and concluding. We can do reflective thinking.
Someone who has scientific critical thinking skills is able to think abstract levels. And also be open to
everything and communicate effectively. To polish scientific critical thinking skills, it must be a part
of science learning.

PISA (Program for International Student Assessment) shows a result in 2015. Indonesian students
are still at level 3 of the 6 level. It can only define based on scientific knowledge. to think complexly,
scientific critical thinking is the solution. On level 5, students make explanations based on eveidence
an arguments. The evidence and arguments that based on scientific critical analysis. TIMSS (The
Trends of the International Mathematics and Science Study) held by the IEA. In 2011 TIMS, based in
the science and cognitive domains, Indonesian students got a 397 grade. Far from the International
Averag grade of 500. It means that Indonesia Students knowledge is still in the limited category.
Teacher center model is the reason why is this happen. Students incline to be passive because the
dominance of the teacher.

35 class VII students of MTs Bustanul Ilmi gain the score range of 53.25 - 68.42 on a scale of 0-100. It
is a study results of scientific critical thinking skills. The average score of the test results included in
the less category. In the initial study, students were less able to omit problems that were the focus
of complex problems. This is in line with the results of the Ulandari et al. SMPN 3 Balung, stated that
junior high school students' critical thinking skills, such :

- interpretation ability (40.47%)

- analysis (31.28%)

- synthesis (30.25%)

- evaluation (34.45%)

- concluded (29.53%)

- inference (37.21%)
- explanation (39.53%).

According to Martin, in other countries, problem of scientific critical thinking also occurs.

Blended learning model is the best learning model to achieve 21st century skills. It also called hybrid
learning. It combines face-to-face learning with online learning. Students are able to collaborate, ask
questions, and think critically. ICT Facilities in school supports the application of blended learning.
Like using the Edmodo as a medium in the blended learning model. It is very helpful to improve
scientific critical thinking skills.

A unique opportunity is what Edmodo offering. Developing students critical thinking skills with the
collaboration among the students. High learning motivation in students is because the usage of
Edmodo. Which is make effective communication of learning.

The goal that can achieved in this study is to increase motivation. Improving critical thinking skils is
also the aim of it. That is all can be reach by using Edmodo-based blended learning models. It is a
good alternative to science learning in junior high school. We can also add teaching media such
projector and laptop in this learning model. Blended learning media is helping students gain the
higher critical thinking skills.

Abstract

This study is aimed to analyze students critical thinking skills with Edmodo. This study Involves 35
students of Class VII SMPN 10 Jember. Pre-test and post test is the design that used in this study
before and after learning activity. Trough the Quantitative Descriptive Analysis, some instruments
used in this study. The students are motivated in classical learning . The results show that the
percentage of the motivated criteria student is 78.13% . Equal to 88,47%, the likes and active
indicator using Edmodo is the highest value. The indicator of ask questions and opinions activity at
Edmoo is equal to 70.93% with an average criteria. There is an increasement in students critical
thinking skills with the .32 n-gain of mean. Equal to.55, the indicator of fact analysis gain the highest
value. The indicators of argumentation delivery got the lowest value, which is equal to .19. Edmodo-
based blended learning model can motivate the students in learning process. And also improve
students critical thinking skills.

Methodology

This research is quantitative research, because the data that must get is a score from pretest. Pre-
Experimental is used in this study to find the treatment's impact on the subject of this research. It
is also to describe an increase of motivation and scientific critical thinking skills. Using One Group
Pre-test as the design, this study take 35 VIII A Students of Public Junior High School 10 Jember as
the subjects. In this study, the instruments that used are : teacher activity observation sheets,
student activity observation sheets, scientific critical thinking skills assessments sheets, and
student motivation sheets.

To analyze student's scientific critical thinking skills, these are the steps that used on it :
- Calculated the results of the scientific critical thinking skills tests on average test score

- Calculated the increase in scientific critical thinking skills that happen before and after learning
with the normalized gain (n-gain) formula and Meltzer formula.

n - gain = Xm - Xn

___________

 100 - Xn

Remarks:

n-gain = normalized gain

Xm = post-test score

Xn = pre-test score

The criteria for n-gain level are: a) n-gain < .3; low, b) .7> n-gain ≥ .3; medium, c) n-gain ≥ .7; high.

Remarks:
P=percentage motivation score achieved by students

m = score obtained by students (motivation score)

M = maximum motivation score

The results obtained are interpreted using the criteria in Table 2

Table 2. Interpretation Criteria for Student Learning Motivation Score

Percentage of Motivation (%) Motivational criteria

86≤ P ≤ 100 Very motivated

72≤P<86 Motivated

58≤P<72 Sufficiently motivated

44≤P<58 Less motivated

30≤P<44 Not motivated
