MODOBASS

Chapter 1 – Introduction

Congratulation! You are now the proud owner of MODO BASS.

MODO BASS is the first physically-modeled bass virtual instrument that gives you an unprecedentedly realistic
performance for your bass tracks. As a producer, you want the best possible bass sound you can get. You
want realism, credibility and authenticity that delivers the most accurate and inspiring performance possible.
Sometimes you just can’t hire the right bass player, and many virtual instruments out there can leave you flat
and uninspired.

Enter MODO BASS — the industry’s first true physically-modeled instrument from the leader in analog modeling
technology. 8 years in the making and developed in collaboration with one of Europe’s oldest universities,
MODO BASS is a completely new breed of instrument that delivers the best of both worlds: the realism and
sound of an instrument being played by a master musician and the convenience of a plug-in virtual instrument.

7 1 - Introduction
MODOBASS

But MODO BASS isn’t a virtual instrument by definition, it’s a completely new technology that redefines realism
from a computer-based instrument. MODO BASS is the first technology of its kind that models the entire process
of playing bass. Every component that contributes to the unique tonal properties of a bass player playing
the instrument has been modeled, and the effects of each component on the other ones — the interactions
between each tone variable — have been recreated to give you a dynamic, living, breathing and ever-changing
performance. You see, traditional virtual instruments are sample-based, meaning that sound is produced by
triggering recorded samples of instruments. But MODO BASS is not a sample-based instrument. Rather, it is a
completely new technology where sound is generated by recreating the physical properties of a real instrument —
everything that makes an instrument create sound is physically modeled and sound is synthesized in real-time.

1.1 – Interacting with MODO BASS

We created MODO BASS with a real bass player in mind. This means that all the techniques, positions,
articulations and style of playing have been studied to help you recreate how a bass player chooses a bass,
plays his bass, how he moves across the fingerboard and the neck, and how he touches the string to get a
particular sound to fit a specific genre, a specific style or simply a specific song. All the panels you find in the
GUI of MODO BASS work together and interact with each other to react to your playing and create exactly the
sound you want, just like in real life.

8 1 - Introduction
MODOBASS

That said, the best results of course will come when you “think like a bass player” creating authentic bass riffs
and grooves, which in the end, is exactly what we were after. It is easier than it seems, and with some practice
and experimentation, MODO BASS will give you infinite possibilities with a sound indistinguishable from a real
bass.

9 1 - Introduction
MODOBASS

Chapter 2 – User interface

The user interface is resizable to fit your needs. Starting from the minimum size of 1032x724, there is no
maximum size, and there is always a fixed ratio (a proportional increase).

The GUI is divided in 4 main sections:

1. Top bar
2. Upper tab panel
3. Central view
4. Bottom keyboard

10 2 - User interface

MODOBASS

Chapter 3 – Top bar

Here you can browse, save, save as and delete presets as well as adjust system preferences.

To browse and select a preset, simply click on the preset name which will open a pop-up list, then click on the
desired preset to load it.

When a parameter is modified on a loaded preset, an asterisk will appear after the preset name to alert you that
the preset has been modified and needs to be saved if you want to preserve your changes.

11 3 - Top bar

MODOBASS

The SAVE button will save all the changes you have made on the preset sound and overwrite the previous
version. The SAVE AS button will save a new preset where you can add the name, a tag and the location where
to save it. Enter this information on the SAVE AS window, and then click SAVE to confirm or Cancel to discard.

The “i” icon will display the software license information, the lock icon will open the Authorization Manager and
the gear icon will open the Settings. The Audio/MIDI tab allows you to select the audio and MIDI device and
settings. The MODO BASS tab let you adjust the velocity curve response and the measurement units for the
interface.

To confirm all your selections, simply press OK.

12 3 - Top bar

MODOBASS

Chapter 4 – Upper tab panel

The upper tab panel shows the related parameters for each of the main six sections.

The available sections recallable from the buttons at the bottom are:
• Model
• Play Style
• Strings
• Electronics
• Amp/FX
• Control

13 4 - Upper tab panel

MODOBASS

Chapter 5 – Model

The first step to create the perfect bassline for your track is to choose the instrument which will start to define
the road you want to take. The model tab lets you choose between 14 of the most iconic and legendary bass
models from the history of music, superbly recreated using MODO BASS physical modeling technology. For
example, for a folk track, a 5-string active pick-up studio bass probably will not fit, and a vintage passive bass is
likely a better choice. But in the end, the choice is yours!

Keep in mind that by choosing one of the available models, all the
physical aspects of that specific model are automatically selected:
the mechanical construction of the body and neck, the type and
age of the wood, the sustain of the instrument, the type and age of
electronics installed and the strings that are used all come with the
mode. Also note that the number of frets on the neck of the original
instrument will limit or expand the range of possible notes, just like
in reality.

To select a bass, simply click on it, and it will be loaded into the
system with its relevant parameters. The “specifications” info shows
you all the loaded parameters of the bass which can be displayed
or hidden with the small arrow the the left of the bass.

A “Reset to default” option is shown on the tab to let you revert to

the original settings of the bass.

Chapter 6 – Play Style

This panel lets you select the way the bass is played. When you choose to use the fingers, to slap or use a pick,
this will also load the physical recreation of all the variables related to the selected style.

6.1 – Finger

When you select the Finger style, the modeling engine of a finger plucking the strings is loaded along with its
relevant parameters:
• STROKE: uses the modeling of either an alternate fingering technique, just an index finger playing or just a
middle finger playing technique.
• TOUCH: enables the modeling of 3 types of touch: soft, normal and hard.

When you move the PLUCK position, the sound changes just like in real-life: when moving toward the Neck, the
sounds became more rounded, and when moving toward the bridge, the sound gets more metallic.

20 6 - Play Style

MODOBASS

6.2 – Pick

Old school punks and rockers can get the sound of a picked bass and adjust these parameters:
• STROKE: uses the modeling of either an alternate picking technique, a down-pick-only playing style or a
up-pick-only playing technique.
• SCRATCH: enables the modeling of 2 types of pick thickness by picking the string normal or hard.

When you move the PLUCK position, the sound changes just like in real-life: when moving toward the Neck, the
sounds became more rounded, and when moving toward the bridge, the sound gets more metallic.

6.3 – Slap

The slap technique is the most difficult and the most wanted when we “talk groove.” It’s a technique that uses
the rotation of the wrist to “Slap” the string with the thumb and then “Pull” another string with the index finger.
Here, you can adjust the STROKE to decide to use the modeling of an AUTO pull technique (automatic slap to
pull), a slap only playing or a pull playing only technique.

When Auto is selected, the pull is always triggered over a certain velocity amount, which can be set by the
THRESHOLD knob.

With the Slap Style, the PLUCK position disappears as the slap technique is used only in a fixed position placed
at the end of the neck.

21 6 - Play Style

MODOBASS

6.4 – Muting

The MUTING is a technique which uses the palm/side of the right hand (unless you are left-handed…) where
you dampen the strings while playing which cuts the sustain and harmonic content of each played note. The
Muting Knob lets you select how much you want to mute the strings.

6.5 – Other Play Style parameters

The playing technique is not limited to the right hand – you can also use the left hand – and the combination of
the two makes the realism really come out. These parameters will help you give more realism to your bassline:

• LET RING: literally, playing without stopping the strings while playing, leaving the strings to naturally
sustain.
• FINGERING: this toggle button lets you select between 3 different left-hand behaviors (for a right-handed
player, of course).
• First position: causes the bass to play within the first 5 frets, in the bass neck. When the note range is
exceed, the movement is limited to the G string.
• Easy: it is a fixed behavior based on the study of the top 100 riffs of all the time and how the bassists
played them.
• Nearest: this dynamic behavior lets the engine search for the nearest note to the last played.
• OPEN STRING: enable the possibility to play open strings in a riff.
• DETACH NOISE: let you adjust the amount of detach noise caused by the finger pressing and releasing
frets.
• SLIDE NOISE: let you adjust the amount of slide noise caused by the finger moving between frets.

22 6 - Play Style

MODOBASS

Chapter 7 – Strings

In this panel, you can select not only the type of strings (number, gauge, age, etc.) but also other settings related
to the bass neck:

• STRINGS: selects the number of strings of the bass (5, 4 or 6), hence the range of the bass and the string
behavior (for example, on Drop D, the E on the 4th string will sound different from the same note on the
4-string type).
• DROP: tunes the lowest string one tone lower, bringing it from E to D (or from B to A in case of a 5 or 6
strings setup). Besides extending the range of the bass, this loosens the string giving it a particular behavior
and tone. DROP tuning is typically found in Hard Rock and Metal genres.
• ACTION: sets the distance between the strings and the neck which changes the fret noise timbre and, if
lowered, becomes more frequent, just how it happens in reality. Three levels are available: Low, Standard
and High.
• TYPE: selects the construction type of the strings. Select between the standard roundwound type to the
more classical muted timbre of the flatwound strings.
• GAUGE: allows you to choose the thickness of the strings which affects the timbre and sustain features.
Select between Light, Medium and Heavy.
• AGE: selects how much the strings have been used (and are elastic) affecting the timbre and sustain
features. By selecting a New string, a sustained and shimmering timbre will be produced, while a more
warm, damped timbre can be selected using Old string settings. Select Broken-in for the most standard
state.
• A REFERENCE: sets the A note reference frequency allowing for tuning offsets.

23 7- Strings
MODOBASS

Chapter 8 – Electronics

This panel allows you to tweak all the parameters of the electronics of the bass starting from the original model.
Like the other tabs, MODO BASS recreates the behavior of the electronics and its variables in changing the
parameters, but is not limited to only this. You can customize the bass by selecting different pickups from the
original and positioning them in the available space of the current body. Each bass can host a maximum of two
pickups. You can select and adjust:

• BRIDGE and NECK Pickups: selects the type of pickup for the two positons and set the relative volume.
24 pick-up models are available between single coils, humbucker and their position in the original model:

• 60’s P SC
• 70’s P SC
• 70’s J BSC
• 70’s J NSC
• Modern J BSC
• Modern J NSC
• B.Man 5 HB

• Metal NSC
• Metal BSC

SC = Single Coil BSC = Bridge Single Coil NCS = Neck Single Coil
HB = Humbucker BHB = Bridge Humbucker NHB = Neck Humbucker

24 8 - Electronics
MODOBASS

• CIRCUIT: selects the behavior of a passive or an active electronics system. The active system adds a
Bass-Mid-High Parametric EQ.
• BASS, MIDDLE, TREBLE: adjusts the EQ of the ACTIVE circuitry
• TONE: sets the tone of the PASSIVE circuitry
• PIEZO: sets the volume of the piezo. The piezo pickup (normally placed under the bridge) can be mixed
with the standard pickups allowing for a much more customizable sound.

When the Electronics panel is selected, you can move the position of both pickups in the central view with
extreme accuracy where it shows the precise distance from the bridge.

25 8 - Electronics
MODOBASS

Chapter 9 – Amp/Fx

To complete the simulation of the entire bass rig, MODO BASS adds also an AMP/FX panel with 2 amps and 4
stomp effects. These analog models – powered by AmpliTube of course – are incredible recreations of the most
iconic types of amplifiers and effects used on electric bass.

For a totally complete palette of amplified tone, MODO BASS can work in tandem with AmpliTube CS, using
only the D.I. volume as the output from the plug-in.

Clicking on the amp or an effect in the central view the upper tab will show the related parameters for quick and
easy adjustment and the pedalboard overview when an effect is selected.

When the Amp/FX tab is selected the central view display a 3D representation of gear that used in the bass rig.

26 9 - Amp/Fx
MODOBASS

The amps available in the softwares are:

• Solid State Amp: Modern and Punchy sound.
• Tube Amp: Vintage and fat sound.

The available FX pedals available for a 4 pedals small rig are:

• Octaver,
• Distortion
• Chorus
• Comp
• Delay
• Envelope Filter
• Graphic EQ

27 9 - Amp/Fx
MODOBASS

Chapter 10 – Control

This section displays the main controls of the software, such as MIDI controls, Pitch Wheel, Keyswitches and
other settings that allow you to control MODO BASS with a MIDI controller in the most convenient way.

In the upper tab, you can find:

SLIDE RANGE: Sets the range of the slide in semitones. (By default, the slide is regulated by the pitch wheel).

VIBRATO RATE: Sets the vibrato rate. (By default, the vibrato is controlled by the mod wheel, MIDI CC #1).

The table in the center of the GUI shows the performance and articulation controls.

Any control can be associated to a Keyswitch, Pitch Wheel or a MIDI message like Control Change and Aftertouch.

Note: Keyswitches can also be located on keys in the playable range, which can be handy on short keyboards.
In this case the Keyswitch has priority over the note which will not play.

28 10 - Control
MODOBASS

The available controls are:

FINGER MODE
Engages the FINGER Play Style.

PICK MODE
Engages the PICK Play Style.

SLAP MODE
Engages the SLAP Play Style.

BEND
Controls the bending of the current note (BEND range is fixed to +/- 1 semitone).

VIBRATO
Controls the Vibrato amount of the current note (Vibrato range is set by the VIBRATO RANGE knob in the upper
panel).

HAMMER ON / PULL OFF

Engages the HAMMER ON / PULL OFF articulation.

LEGATO SLIDE
When this articulation is activated, the slide is also triggered when playing legato. In this case the speed of the
slide follows the target note velocity. The higher the velocity of the target not, the faster the slide. This usually
requires a little practice to get used to the correlation between velocity and speed.

MUTING
Controls the right hand palm muting amount.

GHOST MODE
Engages the ghost notes articulation.

HARMONICS
Engages the harmonics (octave) articulation.

29 10 - Control

30 10 - Control
MODOBASS

10.1 – Customize Controls

To assign a performance control, click on the related TYPE field to select the desired one from the popup menu.
The values of a Keyswitch or MIDI Control Change can be set in the Value field. Keyswitch values range from
C-1 to E7. MIDI Control Change values range from 0 to 119.
The LATCH field sets the latch mode for the given controls. When the latch mode is on the field is highlighted
otherwise the control is momentary.

In the upper part of the keyboard, after the instrument’s notes range, we can find a few other keyswitches:
• E5: triggers the stopping of all the strings, modeling the bass player’s hand stopping them.
• Notes from F5 to E7: lets you move the position of the left hand on the neck. Note that this control can be
done also with a MIDI continuous controller.

31 10 - Control
MODOBASS

Chapter 11 – Bottom keyboard

The keyboard at the bottom of the interface of MODO BASS shows the bass fretboard and the piano keyboard
at the same time.

The piano keyboard shows the note range of the bass plus the assigned keyswitches for the real-time control of
the playing style and performance.

The Bass fretboard shows the position of the left hand behavior system which determines where the note is
played (which fret and which string).

This system positions the left hand as close as possible to how a real bass player would play and also alllows
keyswitches to force the use of a determined fret or string (on the right side of the piano keyboard).

As MODO BASS is not a sample-based engine, the left hand behavior system literally recreates the feel and
sound of a real hand moving on the instrument neck and its force on the strings.

Chapter 12 – Troubleshooting

Where can I find my IK product Serial Number?

The Serial Number is written on the Registration Card (included with your IK product) or in the email you
received from DigitalDelivery@ikmultimedia.com (if you purchased the product as ‘Downloadable only version’).

IMPORTANT: the number zero can easily be identified in your Serial Number because it is crossed by a line.

Why is the Authorization Manager rejecting my Serial Number?

Probably because of a typo, here are some common errors:
• Typing a 0 (“zero” number) instead of an O (“o” letter).
