Q.1 (a) Explain the different types of Retaining Wall. 03


(b) A cantilever retaining wall is designed to retain the earth 3.1 m high 04
behind the wall, Fix the dimension of retaining wall and carry out all
stability checks. The unit weight of soil is 17 KN/m3 and angle of internal
friction is 350. The bearing capacity of soil is 195 KN/m2 and coefficient
of friction between base and soil is 0.46. Use M25 – Fe 415.
(c) For Q.1 (b) above, Design the stem. 07

Q.3 (a) Explain in detail (i) Rigid floor Diaphragm effect (ii) Torsionally coupled 03

(b) An 8 storey R.C.C. building is located in Ahmedabad having 3 bays of 04
7.5 m in X –direction and 3 bays of 7.5 m in Y-direction. All beams are
of size 250 x 400 mm and columns of are of size 400 x 500 mm. Slab
thickness is 150 mm and wall around periphery is 120 mm thick. Find
seismic weight of the building with live load 3 KN/m2. Storey height is 3 m.
(c) Workout seismic forces on structure of above Q.3 (b). Consider hard soil, 07
Residential building, Ductile detailing is to be done for the frame.

Q.3 (a) Explain ductile detailing of column as per IS: 13920. 03
(b) Explain Philosophy of Earthquake resistant design. Give four virtue of 04
good earthquake resistant design.
(c) A public building with seismic weight of 40000 KN with height of 30.5m 07
is in Zone-III, Resting on medium soil site. Ductile detailing is to be done
for the frame. Find total Base shear.

(b) A 200 mm thick R.C.C. flat slab is loaded by live load of 4 KN/m2 and 04
floor finish load of 1 KN/m2. It is supported by 4 columns of size 300 x
400 mm, without providing drop and column head. The columns are
placed at 4.5 m x 6 m centre to centre. Design the slab considering an

following data. Total height of tank = 29 m, which includes height of the
supporting shaft = 21 m, height of bottom conical portion = 2.5 m, height
of cylindrical wall = 4.5 m and rise of top dome = 1 m, diameter of shaft
= 4.5 m and diameter of cylindrical wall = 12 m. Topography = plane
with upwind slope less than 3o.

panels, calculate design base shear and distribute the shear along
the height considering ground storey height 4.5 m by seismic
coefficient method.

Q.1 Draw a typical layout of a G+3 residential building. Prepare structural layout 14
and plot load distribution diagrams for typical floor. Design and detail a typical
continuous beam or a typical column of the chosen building.
Q.2 (a) A seven storied building, 20m X 30m plan dimensions and an overall height of 07
30m is to be designed at Ahmedabad city. Columns are spaced at 5m c/c in
both directions. The building has 7 stories of height 4 m each. Take plinth is at
1m above G.L having no plinth beams but consider beams at 1m below G.L
and footings are provided at 2 m below G.L. Assume overall depth of all
beams = 500 mm and slab thickness 150 mm. Consider life of building 100
years, Category = 3 and Topography = plane. Compute wind loads acting on
an internal frame at node points and plot wind pressure diagram as per
provisions of IS: 875(Part-III).
(b) Explain the followings briefly with necessary sketches.

Q.3 A cantilever retaining wall is designed to retain the earth 5 m high behind the 14
wall. The unit weight of soil is 18 kN /m3 and angle of internal friction is
220.The bearing capacity of soil is 130 kN/m2 and coefficient of friction
between base and soil is 0.4. Use M20- Fe 415. Assume depth of foundation is
as 1 m. Fix the dimensions of retaining wall and design only stem. Also carry
out stability checks.

Q.3 For the counter-fort retaining wall of height 7m above G.L., fix the 14
basic dimensions of the various elements. Angle of repose of soil is 30o. SBC
of soil is180 kN/m2 and density of soil is 18 kN/m3. Friction coefficient
between soil and concrete is 0.55. Design and detail the stem of retaining wall.
Use M20- Fe 415. Carry out usual stability checks.
Q.4 Fix the dimensions of circular overhead water tank container with flat 14
bottom for a capacity of 5 lakh liters. Design and detail top spherical dome,
top ring beam and cylindrical wall of the container. Use M25 grade concrete
and Fe 415 steel.

store 5 lakh litres water. Height of the staging is 16 m up to the bottom of the
tank. Wind load = 1.5 KN/m2 throughout the height. Design and detail (i) Top
ring beam (ii) cylindrical wall. Use M30 & Fe415.

drop and column head. Size of columns = 300mm x 400 mm, Live load = 4

Use M20 concrete and Fe 415 steel.
(b) For typical floor shown in Fig:1, Find out (1) Centre of mass (2) Centre of 07
stiffness (3) Eccentricity. Consider all columns are of 300 mm X 600mm.
Assume uniform mass distribution.
