CHAPTER 1
The Problem and Its Background

INTRODUCTION

Academic performance is important to every student for they need to

maintain their academic standing to survive in school. Academic

standing is a measure of the student's academic achievement relative

to their degree requirements, and determines their eligibility to be

admitted to and/or proceed in their academic plan and to qualify for

graduation. On the other hand, a student athlete is an individual who

engages in, is eligible to engage in or may be eligible in the future to

engage in any intercollegiate sport. This study presents the main idea

of how students give their time and their efforts for studying and for

being an athelete of Colegio De San Lorenzo.

Since students are at the core of learning process, a study tailored

to their motivations, strategies and factors hindering their learning is

imperative as students themselves play pivotal roles in shifting their

own learning and acquiring enhanced academic achievement.

Motivation is a fundamental recipe for academic success. It

involves internal and external factors that stimulate desire and energy

in people to be continually interested and committed to job, role, or

1| Page
subject, or to make an effort to attain a goal.
Zimmerman Collins (2010) found highly efficacious students to

be quickly capable of rejecting faulty strategies, solving more problems,

and reworking more previously difficult problems than their less

efficacious counterparts.

Junior and senior high school students have different motivational

beliefs and learning strategies which they use to learn various subjects.

Student athletes are supported through their academic advisors,

coaches and teachers along with the numerous programs. CDSL has

implemented a number of policies and programs to help athletes

balance their different commitments. Being a student athlete is a great

opportunity to showcase your skill in a certain sport but being a student

is also one of your responsibilities that you need to accomplish.

Managing your time is quite difficult that is why many of the student

athletes are forced to quit the team when they cannot maintain good

grades.

According to Callari (2002), the three most commonly used academic

2| Page
eligibility standards include pass-to-play, a minimum grade point
average, and a requirement that allows only a specified number of

failing grades.

Academic struggles are often related to issues other than

intellect or the simple desire to be successful academically. Many

people are firm believers that the positives of athletic participation

outweigh the negatives.

Studies have shown that participation has a positive impact

on learning and development. Athletic involvement promotes more

efficient use of time and higher motivation to excel at different school

endeavors.

Serious athletes come to practices and games prepared to play.

They may bring equipment and uniforms to help make sure they give

their best performance. Student athletes also need to perform their

best academically by coming in or attending their classes prepared.

They should be certain to have the materials that are needed for class,

such as a notebook and a pen or pencil.

The purpose of this research is to examine the academic

3|Page

performance of student-athletes. The study intended to investigate the

influence of student-athletes’ academic motivation upon entering to

Colegio De San Lorenzo to their academic outcomes or performance.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The main goal of this research is to determine the academic standing of

the student athletes in Colegio de San Lorenzo. This research aims to

answer the following questions :

1) What is the current academic standing of student athletes?

2) What are the advantages & disadvantages of being student athletes?

3) How do student athletes manage their time? How do they cope up for

the lesson they missed?

SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The coverage of this study will only be about the student athletes

who are struggling to study and do their sport at the same time. The

researchers’ main obejective is to find a remedy or something that will

help the student athletes manage their time and to achieve more in

academics and sports.

This study is mainly focused on the academic standing of student

athletes in Colegio de San Lorenzo. The respondents are approximately

fifty (50) student athletes, four (4) coaches and five (5) teachers. We will

interview the teacher who handles student athletes and ask about the

behavior of their students in their class. This study would also like to know

the coaches insights about their strengths in sports.

10|Page
CHAPTER 2

RELATED REVIEW OF LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter includes ideas, studies and information about the

academic performance of student athletes. Being a student athlete is very

difficult since there are different consequences that they may encounter.

Mostly in academics, they need to manage their time for studies and

sports. They also need to maintain their academic standing even though

there is a lot of sports games that they need to attend to. This study will

also present the positive and negative sides of being a student athlete.

ACADEMIC STANDING OF THE STUDENT ATHELETES

According to Angela Lumpkin and Rebecca Achen (2012), it shows

that athletes had low assessment scores and lower dropout rates than

non-athletes. The study compared the performance of athletes and non-

athletes in learning and sports. When an athlete thinks that the rest of

the team does not care about academics, that athlete tries to fit in by

pretending not to care either.

According to Professor Ian Henry, director of the Centre for Olympic

Studies and Research a Loughborough University, having an outlet of

11 |Page
interest other than sports help athletes to put their training and

performance into perspective, allowing them to deal more effectively with

the challenges of sport including setbacks and injury. Student-athletes

tend to take easier classes and get lower grades than non-athletes. This

is not only true for schools from power conferences in big-money sports,

it has been observed.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF BEING A STUDENT

ATHLETE

There is no secret that being a student athlete is hardwork and

takes outstanding time management and balancing skills, but along with

that hardwork comes many positive and potential life changing

opportunities (”The Balancing,“ 2017).

The advantage of being a student athlete is they can receive a

scholarship to pay for their school tuition. Many student-athletes would

not be able to afford a college education if it were not for athletic

scholarships. According to the National Collegiate Athletic Association

(2016), only about two-percent of high school athletes are awarded

athletics scholarships to compete in college. Full scholarships are awarded

by the NCAA to high school students attending Division I or II schools. Of

12 |Page
the many athletes that are awarded scholarships to play sports on the
collegiate level, very few of them go on to play professional sports. The

most rewarding incentive of receiving an athletic scholarship is a free

college education. Another advantage is exposure to public and media

relations on a national and international level. As athletes, students have

the pleasure and opportunity of traveling to other schools to participate

in their respective sporting events.

On the other hand, one of the negative sides of being a student

athlete is physical injury. According to the National Center for Sports

Safety, over 3 million children under the age of 14 incur some type of

injury as a result of sports. These may occur as a result of practice or a

competitive event. Broken bones can result from direct impact of a ball or

a fall during competition. Injuries such as tears of the anterior cruciate

ligament (ACL) occur more and more in young athletes due to the rigors

of practice and competitions.

In addition, time commitment is another concern for student

athletes. Participation in sports requires a significant time commitment

from children. Practices, travel to and from competitions, and the events
13 |Page
themselves, all take time away from children's daily activities. While
exercise is important, these activities should not take away sleep, meals

or school. Finding a balance of these activities will be of great help.

TIME MANAGEMENT OF THE STUDENT ATHLETES

It takes a lot of prioritizing, responsibility, and motivation to be

successful in the classroom. All of the people who succeed in school have

one strong skill in common: good time management. These people are

able to create a balance of work time, play time, and down time. They

know how to organize their lives so that they have time to complete

quality school work efficiently and on time, get rest, and be social with

their friends. This is important for any person, especially for student

athletes.

Student athletes have an entirely different responsibility that

regular students do not have to keep track of. So many things come into

play for student athletes such as workouts, weight training, study hours,

eating, recovery, rest, and finally- free time.

According to Hancock Scott (2011), time management, and its

impact on performance and achievement, has been researched

14|Page

extensively over the last few decades. Many people believe that time
management is the key to success in academics, business and many other

aspects of life. However, previous research on time management has not

produced consistent findings as to whether or not time management is

imperative to academic synthesis.

This study shows a better understanding on specifically which ways

and how education is enhanced or hindered by participation in high school

athletics can help foster changes to maximize the positives of participation

in their academic standing. Lastly, how they handled their schedule and

time.

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

This section shows the discussion of the methods used in this research

entitled, “A Qualitative Study on the Academic Standing of Student

Athletes in Colegio De San Lorenzo”

METHODS AND TECHNIQUES USED

The researchers directly followed some methods in the framework from

concept to practice. In order for the researchers to know the response of

the audience on the problem in this research, qualitative method was

implemented by the researchers.

POPULATION AND SAMPLES OF THE STUDY

The respondents involved in data gathering, ranging from 14-18

years old, are from the junior high school and senior high school

department of Colegio De San Lorenzo for academic year 2017-2018.

There are seventy (70) respondents in total, the first half was from the

basketball team while the remaining half was from the volleyball team.

16|Page
INSTRUMENTS OF THE STUDY
The data of this research were gathered through the use of

questionnaires supported.

QUESTIONNAIRE

Questionnaire to distinguish the time management between studying

and playing, the researchers constructed a questionnaire that was

disseminated to the selected student-athletes of Colegio De San Lorenzo.

CONSTRUCTION

Constructing questionnaires were formulated by the researchers

containing statements related to academic and sports performance. It

was constructed based on the statement of the problem of the research

and was presented to the research advisor for some suggestions for

improvement and revisions.

VALIDATION 17|Page
A letter for the validators was constructed to ask for help in

validating the questionnaire. One of the validators commented that

the researchers should explain first that the academic standing will

be based on the respondents’ own experience. The researchers

should explain how to answer columns 2 and 4 in the questionnaires

before disseminating. Validation letters with attached tools were

approved right away.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

This research has undergone a procedure; before data-gathering,

during data-gathering and after data-gathering.

Before data-gathering, the researchers have constructed problems

related to the research resulting to completion of methodology,

conceptual framework, review of related literature and studies, and also

the tools or questionnaires that was disseminated to the respective

student-athletes. These drafts have undergone revisions and approval

from the research adviser and validators. Lastly, the tools were sent to

Mr. Jhon Michael Padilla, Mr. Christian Joshua Lomahan and Ms. Digna

Mae Pagsanjan for validation.

During data-gathering, the researchers asked permission to the

18|Page
advisers to administer surveys to the selected junior high school and
senior high school. The researchers conducted the first thirty five (35)

surveys to the selected student athletes of basketball and the remaining

thirty five (35) were administered to volleyball players. Lastly, answering

of questionnaire was followed by an interview.

DATA PROCESSING

The data gathered from the student-athletes have undergone

analysis. Thus, researchers used the information to distinguish the

distinctions between academic performance and sports performance.

FREQUENCY COUNT

The statistical techniques were used to compute the data obtained

from the survey answered by the student-athletes. Responses were coded

as often, sometimes, seldom and never and were tallied according to its

group.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND

RECOMMMENDATIONS

The general objetive of this chapter was to determine the study with

emphasis on the summary of findings, appropriate generalizations in the

form of conclusions and recommendations for the problems discovered,

what the result mean and what actions should be taken in the result of

the findings based on the gathered data that were analyzed and

interpreted in chapter 4.

The main goal of this study was to determine the Academic Standing

and Sports Performance of Student Athletes in Colegio de San Lorenzo.

In order to satisfy the goal of this research, the researchers had to look

into the following research objectives: (1) factors that determine the

students’ academic standing; (2) effects of academic standing to students

and coaches; (3) ways on how to manage their time; and lastly, (4)

significance of academic standing to student athletes. The selected

Student Athletes of High School Department were from Colegio de San

Lorenzo, SY 2017-2018.
The data were analyzed and interpreted by using a statistical tool

and combined into more coherent work or consolidated, organized and

tabulated in tables. 25|Page

CONCLUSIONS

Based on the findings of the study, the researchers drew the

following conclusions:

1. Most of the studentt-athletes are planning to pursue sports as a

professional career

2. Most of the student-athletes chose to copy notes from their classmates

and friends.

RECOMMENDATIONS
26|Page
Based from the finding and conclusions of this study, the following

are hereby recommended:

1. Students having a hard time either with sports or academic

performance needs to learn and to adapt with the given task. As a

student-athlete they need to learn to how to cope up and focus on

balancing their time in playing and studying.

2. Teachers. The performance given by the students needs to be

learned by the teachers and evaluate the performance that the

students had given them. Some students can function better with

their own due to the some aspects that lacks other students but

some students functions better collaboratively for they can have

guidance and other ideas for them to learn and perform better.

5. Future Researchers. They can use this study as their basis for

them to know how the student athletes manage their and cope up

with their academic performance. The proposed study will benefit

and help the future researchers as their guide and to gain more

informations.
