Foreword
My grandmother, Ellen (aka Ella) D. Huber, who married Charles H. Gretzinger, often spoke
about our ancestors and shared some historical family documents with me. Those
documents piqued my interest in our genealogy.
In 1995, I attended a Huber family reunion conducted by my cousin, Ray A. Huber. Over the
course of succeeding reunions, he provided some information about my Huber ancestors.
That information included the American Revolution War service of Hans Rudolph Huber. It
did not, however, include the source documents for much of the data. Unfortunately, Ray
passed away in 2016 so I was not able to obtain any of his source documentaion.
In May of 2019, I began a search for the source documents* confirming my Huber ancestors.
My objective was to find documents for each generation beginning with my grandmother,
Ellen "Ella" Huber, to the patriot, Rudolph Huber**. These documents would serve as the
basis for my application to prove that I and Ella are bloodline relatives to a patriot of the
American Revolution. If verified, I would become a Son of the American Revolution (SAR),
and she (my grandmother) could become a Daughter of the American Revolution (DAR) To
cerfify my bloodline to the patriot, I submitted a preliminary SAR membership application on
28 August 2019 to the Philadelphia SAR chapter.
This eBook records each bloodline generation beginning with Ellen D. Huber (Chapter 1) to
the patriot, Rudolph Huber (Chapter 6), a total of six (6) generations. Each chapter includes
copies of source documents to show how this individual is in the bloodline to Rudolph. If it is
certified that I am a Son of the American Revoution (SAR), then my grandmother is an
"unofficial" DAR. For Ella to become a "certified" DAR, a member application must be
submitted in her name and approved by the appropriate DAR State and National chapters.
I submitted my final SAR application on 12 September 2019. Chapter 8 summarizes the
chronological steps in the approval process and includes a copy of my SAR certifiicate.
The final eBook chapter is a report of the Descendents of Has Rudolph Huber. A descendent
who can prove their blood line to Rudolph can file for membership in the Sons or Daughters
of the American Revolution. Citing my SAR membership will simplify the application process.

Chapter 1
Ellen D. Huber
Ellen (aka Ella) D. Huber was born on 11 June 1888 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. As
recorded in the 1920 Census, her father was O. K. (Oswin Kepner) Huber and mother Emma
(nee Dubbs).
She married Charles H. Gretzinger. His death on 26 December 1952 was recorded in the
Parish Record Book (PRB), page 9, for Christ Church in Trumbauersville, Bucks County,
Pennsylvania. A copy of the PRB title page and page 9 follows..

Thirteen years after her husband’s death, Ella died on 16 May 1964 in Quakertown Hospital,
Quakertown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Her Certificate of Death lists her father as Oswin
Huber and mother Emma Dubbs.
These three document (1- 1920 Census record, 2- PRB and 3- Death Certificate) prove that
Oswin K. Huber is the father of Ellen (Ella) Huber.

Chapter 2
Oswin K. Huber
As proven in Chapter1, Ellen D. Huber was a daughter of Oswin Huber. The 1880 Census
for Milford Township (ED 150), Bucks County, Pennsylvania recorded the household of David
Huber, his wife, Catharine, his son, Oswin (age 14 years) and his grand-daughter, Stella (age
1year). A copy of the census record follows.
This census record proves that Oswin Huber was a son of David Huber. In addition, the
Parish Record for the Richlandtown Parish, Quakertown, Pennsylvania, page 272, lists the
death of David Huber at the home of his son, Oswin K. Huber. Following are the title page of
the Parish Record and page 272.

Note that the David Huber’s obituary recorded his father as John Adams Huber and his
mother as Elizabeth Schantz. This document can also be used to prove that David was a
son of John Adam Huber.

David Huber is buried at Christ Church Cemetery, Trumbauersville, Milford Township, Bucks
County, Pennsylvania. He pruchased a cemetery lot for $24 on 11 June 1881. At an
annnual inflation rate of 3%, the lot would cost $1,400 today (2019).
Below is a copy of David's purchase of the cemetery lot (this document is not required for
the SAR application).

Chapter 3
David Huber
In the book, Pennsylvania German Marriages, the marriage of David Huber to

Catharine Keppner is recorded on page 573. A copy of the book’s title page and page
573 are shown below.

The above page 573 recorded David’s wife was Catharine Keppner. Their son, Oswin,
was given the middle name of Keppner/Kepner.
As shown in Chapter 2, David Huber’s obituary recorded that he is a son of John Adam
Huber. This document continues the bloodline from Ellen D. Huber to Oswin K. Huber
to David Huber to John Adam(s) Huber.

John Adam(s) Huber
As discussed in Chapter 2, John Adam(s) Huber was the father of David Huber. The source
for this information was the Parish Record Book of Christ Church in Trumbauersville. The
early church of this congregation was Trumbauer’s Swamp Church of Lower Milford. The
source title page for this congregation is below.

A search of the Swamp church’s parish record found the baptism of John Adam Huber. He
was a son of Jacob Huber (Huper) and was born on 11 February 1784. John Adam was
baptized by the Rev. John Theobald Faber, Sr. on 11 April 1784. The sponsors were Adam
Breisch and Anna Margaret Klein. A copy of this page from the PRB follows.
This church record extends the bloodline connection from John Adam9s) Huber to his father,
Jacob Huber.

Chapter 5
Jacob Huber
In Chapter 4, the church records of Trumbauer’s Swamp Reform recorded that the
father of John Adam(s) Huber was Jacob Huber. The church records of the
Goshenhoppen Reformed Charge (1733-1833) by William J. Hinkle recorded on page
20 the baptism of J. Huber, son of Rudy Huber, on 6 May 1758. Below are copies of the
Goshenhoppen Reformed Charge title page and page 20.

The church records of the Great Swamp Reformed Congregation, Lower Milford
Township, Lehigh Co., PA (1736-1833) by William J. Hinkle, includes the marriage

record of Jacob Huper (Huber) on 21 April 1778 (page 200). The father listed was
Rudolph Huper (Huber) of Great Swamp. Jacob’s wife was Anna Maria Heres, widow
of the late Mr. Heres of Lower Milford.

Chapter 6
Rudolph Huber
This chapter includes the source documents to prove Rudolph was a patriot of the
American Revolution. It begins, however, with the record of Rudolph’s death that was
listed on page 197 of the Great Swamp Reformed Congregation, Lower Milford
Township, Lehigh Co., PA (1736-1833. See Chapter 5 page 15 for the title page).
As listed on page 197 of the Great Swamp Reformed records, Rudolph was buried on
29 March 1779. He was born 1 May 772: aged 56 years, 10 months, 4 weeks.

Rudolph left a Will dated 6 January 1779. It was probated on 30 April 1779, naming his
wife, Annah, and his brother, Jacob, as executors. Five children were lsted: Jacob,
Henry, John, Adelhite, wife of Stephen Ott, and Annah Huber. A copy of the abstract of
the will follows, including the cover page of the Bucks County Abstracts, 1685-1785.

Rudolph Huber Oath of Allegiance
On 28 August 1777, Rudolph Huber took an Oath of Allegaince before a Justice of

Bucks County. The original is filed in the Office of the Register of Wills at Doylestown,
Pennsylvania. These allegainces were summarized and compiled by Richard T. and
Mildred C. Williams in 1973. Rudolph's oath was recorded on page 44. A copy of the
summary and page 44 is below. Note his given name was spelled "Rudolp" in the
summary.

The Military Association of Pennsylvania
The volunteers who comprised the Military Association were called “Associators.” They
composed a civilian reserve designed to repel any invasion of Pennsylvania. In
1775-1776, Rudolph Huber was an Associator of the Lower Milford Township
Association. He was listed on the Revolutionary War Abstract Card File.

Rudolph Huber is also listed on the “Muster Rolls and Papers” for Bucks County. The
Lower Milford Company roll for 1775 recorded on page 173: Captain Henry Huber.

Chapter 8
Results of the SAR Application
The SAR "Application Preparation Manuel" recommends that the applicant contact the
state SAR coordinator who would assign a local sponsor. The sponsor's responsibility
is to guide the prospective member through the application process.
I emailed the Pennsylvania State coordinator on 25 August 2019. He responded and

assigned a local sponsor, the genealogist of the SAR Philadelphia Centennial Chapter.
The genealogist* requested my preliminary appplication and supporting documentation
which I mailed to him on 28 August 2019. My final applicaton was submitted on 12
September 2019 to my SAR Sponser.
Subsequent steps of the application process included the following.

A family member who can confirm a blood line connection to my grandmother, Ellen
(Ella) Huber Gretzinger, is an “unofficial” SAR or DAR. For example, my children, my
siblings and their children and my cousins are “unofficial” SARs or DARs.
To become a “certified” Son or Daughter of the American Revolution, each candidate

must file an application with the appropriate SAR or DAR chapter and the National
Society. Using the approved “Record Copy” of my application, the candidate’s
application process will be simplified.

Notes for Hans Rudolf Huber Jr.:

Rudolph Huber, Jr. emigrated with his two brothers, Jacob and Heinrich, on the ship Bilander
Vernon from Rotterdam. They arrived in Philadelphia on August 19, 1747. Ship records indicate
all three returned to Switzerland after their father died in 1748. the three brothers returned on the
ship "Priscilla" from Rotterdam and arrived at the Port of Philadelphia in September 1749. The
ship Captain was William Meier.
Hans Rudolph served as a Private under his brother, Henry, in the Revolutionary War. When he
died, he left a Will dated January 6, 1779, which was filed for probate in Bucks County, Pa. on April
30, 1779. The Will named his wife, Annah, and his five living children. His estate was in excess of
4,000 pounds, which would made him a rather wealthy man at that time.
Records of Hans Rudolph and his family are recorded in the Great Swamp Ref. Ch., which is now
located in Lehigh county, Pa. Records of the family in Switzerland are mostly from the Huber/Naef
Genealogy by Julius Billeter, 1910, which were compiled from Hausen am Albis Chruch Records,
Switzerland (copies are in the LDS Library records).

David lived in Leipzig, Germany in the 1850's.
The 1870 census for Steinburg, Pa. , page 55, recorded that Catharine Levy, age 22, was
employed by David as a domestic servant. The parents of Catharine Levy are not known.
The 1880 census for Trumbauersville (ED 150), sheet 393C, page 7, line 34 recorded a
granddaughter, Stella (Estella), age 1 (born 1879) who was born in PA was living with David and
Catharine Huber. It is believed that Stella was a Huber and she married a Ralston. Stella and her
husband lived in New Milford, PA on a farm. They were visited by my grandparents, Charles and
Ella (Huber) Gretzinger. As a child, I also recall visiting the Ralston family and eating dinner with
them.
The 1880 census also recorded a servant, Abby Ahlum age 13 (born 1867), living with David and
his family. Another female Ahlum, Priscilla age 18 (born 1862), was recorded by this census as
living with Aaron G. Dubbs and his wife Ellamanda. According to Priscilla's obituary in the Christ
Lutheran Church parish record book, she was one of ten children being raised by her father. The
mother had passed away.

Notes for Oswin Kepner Huber:

Oswin attended the Keystone State Normal School (later Kutztown State Teachers College and
now Kutztown University) from 1882 to 1885, graduating in 1885 as one of 29 with a two year
teacher certificate. He was one of the class orators at graduation.
In a 1904 news clipping, it was reported that Oswin at age 38 eloped on September 13, 1904, with
an 18 year old beauty, Williamenia (Minnie) Heffletrauger. He wrote to his family a few days later
to say that he would never return. Before his departure, he borrowed $1,300 from Emma's father,
Aaron Dubbs.
Oswin and Minnie settled in San Francisco. There he assumed the name Oliver Randolph Hunter.
The family later received letters from Oswin in December 1904 and January 1905 from San
Francisco begging forgiveness and asking for money to return home. To the family's knowledge,
this was the last time they heard from Oswin.

he was buried with the name Oliver Huter. His second wife, Williamenia, is also buried at the same
location.

Rufus served in the Civil War. He enlisted in 1865 at Frankford (I assume this was the arsenal
located in Philadelphia, Pa.) at the age of 21. He and saw action at the Battle of Richmond. His
military record noted that he had light hair, grey eyes, light complexion and was 5' 5" tall.
(per Huber Genealogy by Ray A. Huber and e-mail of 6/20/00 from Jane Hartwich).
In the 1870 census for Susquehanna Co., Pa., Rufus was living in a hotel. His occupation was
cigar maker. In the same hotel with the same occupation was a Michael Hoff. There is a Michael
Hoff, son of John Hoff and Catherine Weidemoyer, born in 1840. This Michael Hoff was my 2nd
great-granduncle.
Rufus Huber was my half great-granduncle.

In her book "Kemmerer Past to Present," Narona discussed the Theresa and Thomas problem on
pages 97 and 98. She states, "According to the birth year of the above (Theresa) and her brother,
Thomas Levy as recorded on tombstones, they were born less than 2 months apart. The 1850 and
1860 census reveal that Theresa was 3 or 4 years older than Thomas. Theresa's obituary and
tombstone inscription reveal the same statistics, likewise, those of Thomas in his obituary with that
of his tombstone. Most likely, the birth year of Thomas is in error."
I tend to agree with Narona. Another consideration is the birth of Thomas' wife, Catharine Ann
Huber, b. 2/28/1847. If Thomas was born in 1838, he would have been 9 years older than
Catharine. If he was born in 1842, he would have been only 5 years older. I realize that this is not
conclusive evidence, but it does help to support a birth year for Thomas of 1842 and not 1838.
Based on the above, I have made Thomas' birth year 1842.
