I. investigation

A. Defining the content and a clear goal

In this era of technology, teenager knowledge can be improved more

easily because of all the information on internet and media, whether it’s a positive

or negative information. One of the bad information that teenager can get easily

is about alcohol. By knowing much information about alcohol will make teenagers

more interested about it. Furthermore, the alcohol itself is already widespread

among young people and teenagers. Finally, teenagers will do two different

responds, either they will avoid it or get interested in it. Teenagers that get

interested will try to drink alcohol, and if they like it and overuse it, it will cause an

addiction toward alcohol. Based on the explanation above, I want to prevent and

stop alcohol addiction by conducting research entitled “Alcohol addiction on

teenagers”.

In this project, I will exploit and utilize the internet’s function to share

information rapidly. By making a poster and video about the effect of alcohol on

teenagers, posting it on facebook, twitter, instagram and then promoting to

friends and family, it will cause the post to be more popular and hopefully will

decrease or prevent teenagers from using alcohol. Beside making a post on the

internet, there’re still some teenagers who don’t understand or use internet and

social media. Therefore, to let them know about this information, I will make a

3
poster that can tell those people about this useful information. I’m going to

spread and post the poster in some middle schools and high schools in

Tangerang and around Jakarta. The poster will provide a pen and will ask the

students to write a signature as a sign that they agree to this project. I’m always

interested in this additive materials (but, not using it), I’m always wondering why

so many people use or drink it while they know that it can be bad for their bodies

and of course it destroys their future. It’s always caught my eyes if i see

someone use alcohol to escape or to “cure” problems that they’re having.

Through this personal project, I want to prevent and stop people, specially

teenagers from drinking alcohol and make them realize that there’re still a lot of

things they can do to solve the problems that they have beside drinking. If the

goal of my project is completed, it will raise the awareness of teenagers about

alcohol and make them avoid drinking alcohol and do more useful activities to

everyone else and for themselves.

B. Identifying prior learning and personal component

For creating the poster, I learnt some basic knowledge about alcohol in

elementary school and from my parents. I always avoid alcohol because I know

the impact if it is consumed. Having knowledge and advices from my parents

gave me the idea that I wanted to make other people stop consuming the

alcohol, but at that time I didn’t have much courage and knowledge.

4
I learnt more about all addictive stuff (including alcohol) in grade 8. At the

time, I was a president of student council and I made an event about this. on the

event, I had a meeting with National Narcotic Agency (BNN, badan narkotika

nasional) twice, it really improved my knowledge about additive materials. I made

a slogan of stopping drugs, and I spread it to all people in Jakarta and

Tangerang.

In this year, I’m still hearing about new information of alcohol. I memorize

all the information as much as I can get to help me finish this project. I have

some experiences which are related to prevent and stop other people to

consume additive materials. I will need all these experiences and knowledge to

make a great and useful project.

C. Demonstrate research skills

From this project, I raise and improve my research skill. I will conduct a

research on the media and the other sources. For each source that I have found,

I should know what I need for my project. I need to filter all the information I get

from all the sources, such as which one I need, which one I don’t need, which

one is more important, and which one is less important. My project is inside the

category of additive materials, so the information talking about it in general will be

5
less important, but I still need it. The sources that are talking about alcohol and

teens will be more important, and finally I will separate them.

I will evaluate each source one by one thoroughly, by checking the

accuracy, objectivity, and currency of the source. By doing that I will know which

source I will need for making the project.

My primary source is interviewing an expert from BNN. I will ask some

important information related my topic research to them. The answers which they

give to me are definitely accurate and appropriate because they come from an

agency that works on additive materials all the time, and for me it will be easier to

understand because I will interview them with Bahasa Indonesia and then

translate it into english for the report. Beside BNN, I will interview other agencies

related to the project. [Appendix 1]

My secondary sources will be taken from all kinds of media social and

internet (websites, articles, videos, blogs). I check every information on the

media including when they are published so I know that the information I am

reading can be trusted. The information from all the media and internet must be

accurate and trustable, and I will use only the information that I need, and that is

about alcohol addiction on young people or teenagers.

I have already done some research in some websites, articles, and blogs,

but not all of them is verified and can be trusted, because the information that is

given is out of the date and it could change over these years. Therefore, I do a

6
big scale of research skill by evaluating each and every source I get and also by

asking or interviewing the professionals.

II. planning

A. Develop a criteria for product / outcome

After I gather all the information and evidence for my product, the products

which are the video and the poster must have some characteristic features and I

design some details to my poster and video to maximize and to reach the goal of

my personal project.

Designs and details for the poster:

- The poster needs a picture of a human body

- The poster needs to tell each and every part of human body (with an

arrow) that will be affected by alcohol

- The poster will have an information about the impact of alcohol for the

body parts according to which the arrow pointed

7
- The poster needs to specify that the information given is the body of a

teenagers (middle school, high school)

- The poster will provide a few pen

- The poster will have a blank space at the bottom, a place for the student

to write their signature

Details about video:

- The video length is about 1-3 minute(s)

- It contains the impact of alcohol and the life of an alcoholic

- The video is accompanied with the music, so that the audience will not get

bored when watching it

When all the details and designs are executed, people that are reading the

poster are expected to understand the content and agree to the project which is

made.

B. Plan and record the development of the project

For actually making the product of the project, I divide time to make the

product each week for managing time so it will not disturb the other works I have.

To create the product I will need four to five weeks to complete it. It means I will

spend around 5 hours each week to start and continue making the product.

[Appendix 2]

8
From the two products, poster and video, that I will make, I’m going to

make the easiest one first. And the one which I can do first is poster. The first

part is to find content and information to put into the poster. The content need to

be simple. After getting sufficient inspiration from the sources and knowing what

to draw, I make a few sketches of the poster, and at the end I chose which one is

the most suitable design and details [Appendix 3]. This progress is achieved at

the second week.

After finishing the final sketch, it’s time for making and printing the actual

posters, this is done after third or fourth week. The rest of the week will be the

launching of the poster to ten till twenty schools around jakarta.

For the video, it will be hard for me to do it alone, so I need some help

from my acquaintance for making the video. The content of the video is almost

the same like the poster, but there will be more information of the relationship

related to the content. The first three weeks is used to make and finish the

animation of the video, after the animation is done, I go to the next process which

is making the voice or audio that will match the timing of the animation. The last,

after the video is finished, the video will be posted on youtube and I will always

keep track of both poster and video.

9
C. Demonstrate self-management skills

This project has developed students’ management skills especially me. It

is because of all the deadline and limited time to do the works push me to do my

best. Before doing this project, I only learned about managing my time by taking

the position of STUCO, and to be honest, it was actually not enough for

developing my self-management skills. Sometimes I failed to meet the deadline

for my personal project and the other works I had. I didn’t have enough ability to

managing the priority. But through this process of PP, I learn much. It has

improved my management skill especially about managing time a considerable

amount. As a student, it is very important to have such skill. Being smart for

managing time not only helps you to choose the priority, but also finish the

assignment or project based on the time given. In addition, by making this project

has also improved my understanding of using technology more effectively and

wisely. I used to spend my time and energy to use technology for doing unusefull

things and less important things, but now it seems that I use technology for

searching important information and sources which I need for the project. And

finally, The process of making this project has taught me how to finish a work

effectively. I fully understand that by focusing onto just one work at a time, it can

improve the quality of the finished work. There is no such thing as “multitasking”

because the more work you do, at the same time it just lessens the quality of the

work and yourself.

10
The main point is all the failures of the project that have occurred during

the research make me improve how fast I work, and how I work under pressure

and the concentration. Because of this project, I have increased my

self-confident and also my quality of life. Therefore, I have explained clearly that

this project has a big positive impact to me.

III. Taking action

A. Create a product / outcome in response to the goal, context, and

criteria

After finishing my sketch for the poster, I make the real poster digitally and

then print the finished product and. The content of the poster is related to the

goal which is preventing teenagers from drinking by asking them to write their

signature as a sign of agreement. To persuade the readers to write their names

or signatures, the main content of the poster is explaining the bad impact of

alcohol for our body. Searching the source is not hard, but the hardest part is

making the actual video. I need some help for making the animation and music to

execute the video. I ask anyone I think that could help me make the video. After I

finish the video that almost has a similar context as the poster, then I post it on

youtube to cover even more people (so it is not only in schools). Hence, both my

11
products are related to the global context which is “identities and

relationships”.[appendix 4]

B. Demonstrate thinking skills

By making this project for over a month, it has definitely improved my

thinking skills. By checking, examining, and inspecting the project more than one

time have upgraded my accuracy and precision of thinking. It is needed to

minimize the error and mistakes which could happen and appear during making

this project. Making a project is so much more than just searching for resources,

finding evidences, and looking for experts. I need to think about how I can get

reliable sources related to the topic, make interesting video and poster, list the

questions proposed for the interview, spread my poster to around 10 schools,

and get signature from the student. I think some ideas about it all and do my

ideas one by one. For instance, Giving one or two posters to each school by

asking a friend to post it somewhere that can be seen by a lot of student in their

own schools. Other than just posting the posters and just letting them be, I need

to keep track of how many signatures have been written on the poster to indicate

if it is successful or not. By surveying or visiting the school each week or month, I

can determine whether my poster is working or not. I also think about another

way to keep track of my poster, which is taking photo every week and it will make

it easier for me.

12
Beside improving my thinking skills to solve a problem, this project also

achieves and increases my mind creativity and mental strength. Creatively

dealing with my problem can be a lot of fun for a person who loves art, I can add

some of my hobby, something I love to my work to make it more interesting and

eye-catching. All of this deadline and expectation has really pushed me into a

corner, but because of this challenge I become more and more capable to deal

with many obstacles and problems.

The poster I make also has an impact on me, I don’t know much about

alcohol before working and making this project. I can explain and tell people what

will happen if someone dares to drink alcohol, and the impact of alcohol has

immediately started the moment you drink for the first time. This is how I improve

my thinking skills, my physical skill, mental skill, and my creativity.

C. Demonstrate communication and social skills

The project has improved the skills I need the most, they are

communicating and socializing. To get reliable and appropriate sources, I

interview an expert from BNN (Indonesian agency that taking care of drugs,

alcohol, and other addictive materials). The questions are such as how alcohol

will affect you, how many teenagers have drunk alcohol, why they drink, and how

I can persuade them to stop.

13
As she explains everything I need to know about teenagers and alcohol,

the content on both of my project and product has improved. She says that a

poster or video that can persuade people doesn’t have to include a picture of

something scary, just writing something nice and persuasive, it is enough. This

interview has also improved my understanding of other people’s perspective, by

knowing what causes them to drink, I can easily know also what can cause them

to stop.

Beside from interviewing an expert, I increase my communication skill by

talking to all of the people that can help me who come from the school involved.

Moreover, My social skill has improved because of all of these searching for

resource, interviewing an expert, and narrowing down the information that is

given.

IV. Reflecting

a. Evaluate the quality of the product/outcome against their criteria

The poster evaluation:

Specification 1 7 out of 8

I marked my first specification 7 out of 8 - The poster and video are excellently

created, informative, and persuasive. Other than marking it myself, I also asked

my supervisor to mark my poster for specification 1, not only she gave me

14
approval for my poster, she has also marked my specification 1 for 7 out of 8.

[appendix 5]

Specification 2 6 out of 8

I have given my second specification 6 out of 8 - after calculating the amount of

signature that was written on the poster, the average amount of signature has

reached 65 signatures.

Specification 3 7 out of 8

The marks I gave the third specification are 7 out of 8 - when i went to one of the

school that i posted my poster on, i see almost every people that are passing

always stop in front of the poster and then read it. Therefore, i can conclude that

my poster has a great content.

b. Reflect on how completing the project has extended their knowledge

and understanding of the topic and the global context

From the research I have done about teen and alcohol, I have improved

and extended my knowledge about the main reasons why teenagers want to

drink alcohol and the consequences. And finally I realize that everyone who has

ever tried to drink alcohol has their own problems to deal with, and they want to

escape from their own problems. But in fact, drinking alcohol doesn’t help

anything. In the contrary, it will only increase and worsen the problem.

15
Before conducting the research, I only knew that drinking alcohol could

make us drunk and I didn’t understand the impact thoroughly. I wasn’t aware that

alcohol could be one of the reasons to ruin our future. Other than the impact of

alcohol to their own body, I can also uncover the effects of alcohol on their

relationships with others including family and friends.

c. Reflect on their development as an IB learner through the project

Having finished this project, it isn’t only improving my awareness of this

current problem but also sharpening my skill of working under pressure, how to

use and manage time effectively, and thinking deeper about interacting with

other. All this enhanced skill came from having to do work in limited time and with

all of this deadline, and the difficulty of searching the evidences and

sources.[appendix 6]

The topic of the project is actually not that hard, because as we all know

that alcohol is a bad thing to consume. The making of the product for this

personal project was also easy, given that one of my hobbies is drawing, so I

was actually having fun while making the poster. The struggles and difficulties

that I faced were finding someone that was addicted to alcohol, and I also had to

remember that this project was referred to teenagers, so I had to find a teenager

that was addicted. However, even if I found someone, we had to do an

16
agreement to have an interview. But, this was the most difficult part because not

all people I met would agree to talk about their addiction, so i had to persuade

them by making this information anonymously so that their identity would not be

known by other people. After determining someone to be interviewed, the next

step was making the poster, and the poster needed to be interesting and

persuasive. Beside interviewing an addicted teenager, I also interviewed an

expert to have more detail information for my project and poster[appendix 7].

From the expert, she gave me a suggestion that the poster didn’t have to be

intimidating by using a terrifying picture, but it tended to a positive message.

At first, I chose “the impact of drugs” as the subject of this project.

However, after consulting to my supervisor, I was given an advice to narrow

down my subject because drugs were too general. From that time, I improved my

learning skill by understanding and being focus at one specific topic, because as

the broader the topic, the more problems and difficulties I will face also.

Therefore, it is better for me to choose a specific topic and only focus on that

topic only. Furthermore, I know how to do my work efficiently by doing it gradually

and regularly.

Finally, as an IB learner, I have to pay more attention to our surrounding

and society. And if it is needed, we have to give solution to other people’s

problems in order to prevent them from consuming the alcohol. In educational

17
environment, we can invite an expert to give explanation about the danger of

alcohol more thoroughly. For my own lessons from this project, I learnt to be

more selective in choosing people as a friends. However, I mustn’t avoid

addicted teenagers if they are actually addicted, but I should help them to solve

their problems and stay friend with them. I also enhanced my writing skill by

making this report of the project, it includes my language, vocabulary, and even

my grammar. Most important thing is this project has made my preparation for

the next tasks better, and also earned a stronger determination.

Communication The communication activities throughout this project (finding

evidence, planning for the interview, interviewing, meeting with
teacher or supervisor) has improve my communication skill
drastically. Not only it has improve my fluency in speaking english,
but i also know how should i talk with people, different people
different way.

Management This project changed me from a lazy person who cannot manage
time well into a person who plans everything so that i know what to
do and how do use my time the most effective.

Drawing / art As both my products are somehow related to art, my skill in art
(drawing) also developed without me realizing it. I need a lot of
sketch to know what is the best model for the poster, throwing out a
bunch of scrap paper full of sketches because it was hard to find
the right design to look both persuasive and attractive.

25
stop-motion The skill to edit a video is far from reach to me at first, that is why i
chose a type of video / animation that requires the least video
editing skill which is stop-motion. Combining a hundreds of pictures
in an order and playing it a few frames per second are the basic
steps of how to do stop-motion video; thus, i have increase my skill
in video editing and i’m sure that i will need this in the future.

[appendix 7] interview

“What is the most common reason for teenagers to drink alcohol”

“The first reason is that we as human already has curiosity ‘what does it tastes
like, what will happen if i get drunk. But that urge is also supported by the
environment they are in, maybe they usually hangout with alcoholics. If someone
sees another person drinking an alcohol, the first 3 seconds that the person
thinks is ‘i also want to try’”

“How many people that are categorized as teenager only in jakarta are
alcoholic?”

“In indonesia, there are 4 million people that are alcoholic and 28% is a student
or teenager. I know that the majority is a worker, but we must not underestimate
this 28% because they are the future of this country”

“Where did they get this alcohol, from what source?”

“They got it from a friend or friendship. In a group of alcoholics, one of them has
a contact or an access to a person who is selling the alcohol”
