Chapter 6 : Pythagoras’ Theorem

Effective Notes

1) The hypotenuse s the longest side of a right- angled triangle.

2) The Pythagoras’ Theorem states that in a right-angled triangle, the squares of the
other two sides.

c b

B C
a

Pythagoras’ Theorem : AB 2 = BC 2 + AC 2

c 2 =a 2 +b 2

3) Some common Pythagorean triples are:

( 3 , 4 , 5 ) , ( 6 , 8 , 10 ) , ( 5 , 12 , 13 ) , ( 8 , 15 , 17 ) and ( 7 , 24 , 25 ).

4) The converse Pythagoras’ Theorem states that if the square of the longest side
equal to the sum of squares of the other two sides, then the angle opposite the
longest side is a right – angle.

5) In ABC
a) If c 2 = a 2
+b 2
Then C = 90 degree

b) If c 2 a 2 +b 2
Then C is an obtuse angle.

c) If a 2 c 2+b 2
Then C is an acute angle.
